An aggressive nonconsumptive effect mediates pest control and multipredator interactions in a coffee agroecosystem.

Natural pest control is an alternative to pesticide use in agriculture, and may help to curb insect declines and promote crop production. Nonconsumptive interactions in natural pest control that historically have received far less attention than consumptive interactions, may have distinct impacts on pest damage suppression and may also mediate positive multipredator interactions. Additionally, when nonconsumptive effects are driven by natural enemy aggression, variation in alternative resources for enemies may impact the strength of pest control. Here we study control of the coffee berry borer

Comparison of Novel Sandfly Control Interventions: A Pilot Study in Bangladesh.

In this pilot comparative study, we investigated and compared the effects of existing vector control tools on sandfly densities and mortality to inform and support the National Kala-azar Elimination Program (NKEP). The interventions included insecticidal wall painting (IWP), reduced-coverage insecticidal durable wall lining (DWL), insecticide-impregnated bednets (ITN), and indoor residual spraying with deltamethrin (IRS). Sakhua union with seven villages was the study area, which was the most highly endemic visceral leishmaniasis union in Trishal upazila, Bangladesh. Each cluster containing th

What's eating you? bedbugs.

Bedbugs are a known household scourge that also have become an increasing problem in the corporate space. These pests have adapted to the office environment, finding new harborages in which to thrive and devising new ways to obtain blood meals during the day. Bedbugs pose a considerable public health problem, and managing the epidemic will require vigilance by health care professionals as well as patient education on prevention. We present the case of a 42-year-old man with treatment-refractory pruritic papules over the bilateral posterior arms that were attributed to a bedbug infestation at h

Identification of the Aggregation-sex Pheromone Produced by Male Monochamus saltuarius, a Major Insect Vector of the Pine Wood Nematode.

In this study, we isolated and identified an aggregation-sex pheromone from Monochamus saltuarius, the major insect vector of the pine wood nematode in Korea. Adult males of M. saltuarius produce 2-undecyloxy-1-ethanol, which is known as an aggregation-sex pheromone in other Monochamus species. We performed field experiments to determine the attractiveness of the pheromone and other synergists. More M. saltuarius adult beetles were attracted to traps baited with the pheromone than to unbaited traps. Ethanol and (-)-α-pinene interacted synergistically with the pheromone. Traps baited with the p

Variations in attack behaviours between Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides in a gallery forest suggest host specificity.

Tsetse flies Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides are among the major vectors of sleeping sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis-HAT) and nagana (African Animal Trypanosomiasis - AAT) in West Africa. Both riparian species occur sympatrically in gallery forests of south west Burkina Faso, but little is known of their interspecies relationships although different authors think there may be some competition between them. The aim of this study was to check if sympatric species have different strategies when approaching a host. A man placed in a sticky cube (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) and a stick

One Hundred Years After Its Discovery in Guatemala by Rodolfo Robles, Onchocerca volvulus Transmission Has Been Eliminated from the Central Endemic Zone.

We report the elimination of Onchocerca volvulus transmission from the Central Endemic Zone (CEZ) of onchocerciasis in Guatemala, the largest focus of this disease in the Americas and the first to be discovered in this hemisphere by Rodolfo Robles Valverde in 1915. Mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin was launched in 1988, with semiannual MDA coverage reaching at least 85% of the eligible population in > 95% of treatment rounds during the 12-year period, 2000-2011. Serial parasitological testing to monitor MDA impact in sentinel villages showed a decrease in microfilaria skin prevale

Active case detection in national visceral leishmaniasis elimination programs in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal: feasibility, performance and costs.

BACKGROUND: Active case detection (ACD) significantly contributes to early detection and treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) cases and is cost effective. This paper evaluates the performance and feasibility of adapting ACD strategies into national programs for VL elimination in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. METHODS: The camp search and index case search strategies were piloted in 2010-11 by national programs in high and moderate endemic districts / sub-districts respectively. Researchers independently assessed the performance and feasibility

Dispersion of peptides in vegetable oil as a simple slow release formula for both injection and oral uptake in insects: a case study with [His7]-corazonin in an albino Locusta migratoria deficient in corazonin.

Upon realizing that for drug delivery in the body, lipidization is a technique used in the pharmaceutical industry, we took in consideration … but not for adults. These results necessitate the revision of the potential of (some) peptides for insect control. Also, they suggest practical recommendations for the application of other peptides in physiological assays where oil could be used as a simple slow release formula.

Tsetse elimination: its interest and feasibility in the historical sleeping sickness focus of Loos islands, Guinea.

Guinea is the West African country which is currently the most prevalent for sleeping sickness. The littoral area is the region where most of the recent sleeping sickness cases have been described, especially the mangrove sleeping sickness foci of Dubreka and Boffa where Glossina palpalis gambiensis is the vector. Loos islands constitute a small archipelago 5 km apart from the capital, Conakry. Medical, animal, and entomological surveys were implemented in these islands in Oct-Nov 2006. No pathogenic trypanosomes were found in these surveys. The locally very high tsetse densities (up to more t

Can visceral leishmaniasis be eliminated from Asia?

Data on the burden of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Indian sub-continent are vital for elimination programme planners for estimating resource requirements, effective implementation and monitoring of elimination programme. In Indian sub-continent, about 200 million population is at risk of VL. Nearly 25,000-40,000 cases and 200-300 deaths are reported every year, but these are grossly underestimates. Recent well-designed multicentric studies identified VL burden of 21 cases/10,000 among sampled population in Indian sub-continent (Bangladesh, India and Nepal). This estimates 4,20,000 cases per

Periurban Trypanosoma cruzi-infected Triatoma infestans, Arequipa, Peru.

In Arequipa, Peru, vectorborne transmission of Chagas disease by Triatoma infestans has become an urban problem. We conducted an entomologic survey in a periurban community of Arequipa to identify risk factors for triatomine infestation and determinants of vector population densities. Of 374 households surveyed, triatomines were collected from 194 (52%), and Trypanosoma cruzi-carrying triatomines were collected from 72 (19.3%). Guinea pig pens were more likely than other animal enclosures to be infested and harbored 2.38x as many triatomines. Stacked brick and adobe enclosures were more likely

Aiming to eliminate tsetse from Africa.

The problem of tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiasis occurs only in sub-Saharan Africa, where it represents a major constraint to socio-economic development. The East African form of sleeping sickness, caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodensiense, is an acute and fatal disease, whereas the West African form, caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, is generally more chronic and debilitating. The African governments have developed a new initiative, known as the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign, which seeks to employ an area-wide approach and appropriate fly suppression metho

Pyrethroid-treated bednet effects on mosquitoes of the Anopheles gambiae complex in The Gambia.

The response of Anopheles gambiae complex mosquitoes to men sleeping under insecticide-impregnated or untreated bednets in six verandah trap huts was studied during the dry season in The Gambia. With this type of hut it was possible to collect live and dead indoor-resting mosquitoes and estimate the number of wild mosquitoes which entered, bloodfed on man, and exited each night. Bednets were treated with emulsions targetted to leave deposits of 25 mg/m2 lambda-cyhalothrin, or 5, 50 or 500 mg/m2 permethrin, diluted from emulsifiable concentrates (EC), or a blank formulation similar to the EC ex

Onchocerciasis infection in children born during 14 years of Simulium control in West Africa.

The incidence of onchocerciasis infection in children born since the start of vector control is one of the indicators used in the epidemiological evaluation of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP). Though initially of littel value, after a decade of control it has become a sensitive indicator of residual transmission. The results of 14 years of control are reported. In 179 villages parasitological surveys were undertaken at intervals of 3-4 years. 15,286 children were examined and 110 were found to be infected, compared to an expected number of 2467 infected had there been

[The use of sentinel animals for the evaluation of the control of vectors of sleeping sickness: preliminary reports at a Congolese site].

A large-scale control trial against Glossina palpalis palpalis was carried out in the Congo using a new trapping technique. In the same way a test related to the experimental utilization of sentinel animals was performed, concurrently to the classical epidemiological and entomological evaluation. 564 domestic animals (pigs, sheep, goats) were examined parasitologically (wet blood films, Woo/HCT) and serologically (Testryps CATT) in six villages. When a drastic reduction of tsetse populations was achieved (i.e. zero point of apparent density) a parasitological negativation was first noted after

The effect of infection with the entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Entomopthorales) on eighteen cytokine-like proteins in Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) larvae.

BACKGROUND: In response to the replace mammal research models with insects in preliminary immunological studies, interest has grown in invertebrate defense systems. The immunological response is regulated by cytokines; however, while their role in mammals is well understood, little is known of their function in insects. A suitable target for studies into insect immunology is Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera), the wax moth: a common host for human fungal and bacterial pathogens. G. mellonella is also a perfect subject for studies into the presence of cytokine-like proteins. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Lipids in Insect Reproduction: Where, How, and Why.

Modern insects have inhabited the earth for hundreds of millions of years, and part of their successful adaptation lies in their many reproductive strategies. Insect reproduction is linked to a high metabolic rate that provides viable eggs in a relatively short time. In this context, an accurate interplay between the endocrine system and the nutrients synthetized and metabolized is essential to produce healthy offspring. Lipids guarantee the metabolic energy needed for egg formation and represent the main energy source consumed during embryogenesis. Lipids availability is tightly regulated by

Escherichia coli Mono-Association Modulates Ionotropic Receptor-Dependent Behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster.

Chemosensory systems are crucial for insect survival, enabling host-seeking, food acquisition, and oviposition site selection. While insect-associated microbes are known to influence host development and immunity, their role in modulating chemosensory behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we show that mono-association with Escherichia coli alters sensory-driven behaviors in both larval and adult axenic Drosophila melanogaster. In larvae, E. coli mono-association altered phototaxis and mechanosensory responses across genotypes, while changes in tunneling and thermosensory behaviors were red

β2-tubulin and its promoter in the brown planthopper: A versatile tool for genetic control strategies.

At present, the application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology for genetic manipulation in insects is predominantly concentrated on Diptera model species, including Drosophila and mosquitoes. In contrast, non-model insects such as the brown planthoppers (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), a major insect pest of rice, have received less attention in genetic manipulation due to insufficient tools. Here, the analysis of spatiotemporal expression patterns revealed that β2-tubulin in BPH (NlB2t) was predominantly concentrated in male adults and male testis, exhibiting high expression levels. Knockdown of NlB2t expre
