Primary Intestinal Lymphoma in Rabbits.

Neoplasms of the intestinal tract are uncommon in rabbits and primary lymphoma of the intestinal tract is rare. This case series is the first detailed description of primary intestinal lymphoma in rabbits. We reviewed four cases of primary intestinal lymphoma in rabbits aged 5-9.5 years old with an average age of 7.8 years. Neoplastic cells in three cases were large (8 μm diameter) while one case had intermediate cells (5 μm diameter). Neoplastic lymphocytes were of B-cell lineage and characterized by intense, multifocal, membranous immunoreactivity for CD79a and no immunoreactivity to CD3. Ba

Intestinal Intussusception: A Shocking Diagnosis.

Intussusception is a rare condition diagnosed in adults, with few cases reported as idiopathic. It is defined as the invagination of an intestinal segment into another adjacent one, due to the presence of a lead point, or in some cases, without identifiable causative lesions. The presentation is non-specific, even with careful evaluation, and most of the time, the diagnosis is made during surgery. We hereby present the case of a 73-year-old woman with idiopathic intussusception who presented in the emergency room. She was taken to the operating theatre, where intestinal resection was performed

Innovations in Immunosuppression for Intestinal Transplantation.

It has been 57 years since the first intestinal transplant. An increased incidence of graft rejection has been described compared to other solid organ transplants due to high immunogenicity of the bowel, which in health allows the balance between of dietary antigen with defense against pathogens. Expanding clinical experience, knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology and immunology have progress post-transplant immunosuppressive drug regimens. Current regimes aim to find the window between prevention of rejection and the risk of infection (the leading cause of death) and malignancy. The ultima

Dermatomyositis-related intestinal dysmotility.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an inflammatory myopathy (IIM) characterized by proximal muscle weakness and pathognomonic skin lesions. A 69-year-old woman with a recent diagnosis of DM 1 month prior, treated with corticosteroids and immunomodulators, presented to our inpatient rehabilitation with worsening dysphagia and constipation. At the time of our evaluation, physical examination was notable for erythematous papules over the metacarpophalangeal joints, proximal interphalangeal joints, elbows, and knees as well as a violaceous rash on the face. Muscle strength was diminished bilaterally with pro

The Role of the Intestine in the Development of Hyperuricemia.

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of sodium urate crystals in the joints. Hyperuricemia is the fundamental factor of gout. The onset of hyperuricemia is related to purine metabolism disorders or uric acid excretion disorders. Current studies have shown that the intestine is an important potential organ for the excretion of uric acid outside the kidneys. The excretion of uric acid of gut is mainly achieved through the action of uric acid transporters and the catabolism of intestinal flora, which plays an important role in the body's uric acid balance. Here we revi

[Intestinal and appendicular ureteral substitution].

AIM: To present the technical features and results of intestinal and appendicular ureteral replacement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1998 to 2020, a total of 196 patients aged 18 to 77 years (mean age 49.5 +/- 1.2 years) were undergone to intestinal and appendicular ureteral reconstruction in our clinic. There were 123 women (62.8%). The most frequent indications for surgery were complications of open and endoscopic ureteral procedures, radiation-induced ureteral stricture, and iatrogenic injuries of the ureters during gynecological and surgical interventions (81.6%). In 165 (84.2%) patients, f

Intestinal Tuberculosis: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Diagnosing intestinal tuberculosis (TB) with uncommon clinical manifestations is often challenging. Here, we report a case of an alcoholic patient who presented with vague symptoms and was later diagnosed with intestinal TB. This patient experienced multiorgan failure causing hemodynamic instability requiring ionotropic support; acute hypoxic respiratory failure managed with non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, hepatic failure, transudative peritoneal effusion, and transudative pleural effusion. These conditions clouded our judgment to pursue colonoscopy for a definite diagnosis and del

Intestinal Inflammation and Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease which significantly influences the life quality of patients. The protein α-synuclein plays an important driving role in PD occurrence and development. Braak's hypothesis suggests that α-synuclein is produced in intestine, and then spreads into the central nervous system through the vagus nerve. The abnormal expression of α-synuclein has been found in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Intestinal inflammation and intestinal dysbiosis have been involved in the occurrence and development of PD. The present review aimed to

Intestinal obstruction caused by Anisakis.

A 77-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department due to a clinical and radiological pattern of intestinal obstruction. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a dilatation of the jejunum loops with a change in bowel caliber in the proximal ileum and segmental edema of the intestinal wall. An urgent laparotomy was performed which revealed adhesions between intestinal loops and an intraluminal mass in the proximal ileum with a change in the bowel caliber. The affected segment of the proximal ileum measuring 20 cm was resected and a small-bowel manual termino-terminal anastomo

Paediatric intestinal failure and transplantation.

Intestinal failure is a complex and debilitating condition characterised by inadequate small intestinal function requiring parenteral or intravenous nutrition to maintain health and, for children, to enable growth and development. Although parenteral nutrition can be prescribed in many hospitals, children with chronic intestinal failure have improved outcomes when managed at a paediatric centre by a multidisciplinary team with specialised expertise in the comprehensive management of intestinal failure. Recent advances in the medical, surgical and nutritional approach have been effective at opt

Bowel resection for intestinal endometriosis.

Over the last twenty years, segmental resection (SR) has been the technique most frequently used to treat bowel endometriosis. Nowadays, it is most commonly performed by laparoscopy; however, there is evidence that it can be safely performed by robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. Rectovaginal fistula and anastomotic leakage are the two major complications of SR; other complications include pelvic abscess, postoperative bleeding, ureteral damage, and anastomotic stricture. Several studies showed that SR causes improvement in pain and intestinal symptoms; nerve-sparing SR may improve the func

Neuronal innervation of the intestinal crypt.

Mucosal damage is a key feature of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and healing of the mucosa is an endpoint of IBD treatment that is often difficult to achieve. Autonomic neurons of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system may influence intestinal epithelial cell growth and modulating epithelial innervation could for that reason serve as an interesting therapeutic option to improve mucosal healing. Understanding of the biological processes triggered by nonspecific and specific epithelial adrenergic and cholinergic receptor activation is of key importance. At present, with rising te

Adult Intestinal Toxemia Botulism.

Intoxication with botulinum neurotoxin can occur through various routes. Foodborne botulism results after consumption of food in which botulinum neurotoxin-producing clostridia (i.e., Clostridium botulinum or strains of Clostridiumbutyricum type E or Clostridiumbaratii type F) have replicated and produced botulinum neurotoxin. Infection of a wound with C. botulinum and in situ production of botulinum neurotoxin leads to wound botulism. Colonization of the intestine by neurotoxigenic clostridia, with consequent production of botulinum toxin in the intestine, leads to intestinal toxemia botulism

Is There a Role for Desensitization in Intestinal Transplantation?

Human leukocyte antigen allosensitization prior to transplant can increase the risk of early graft loss and prolong waitlist times for intestinal transplant candidates. Desensitization offers a potential therapeutic option to reduce the quantity of preformed antibodies prior to organ allocation and facilitate transplantation with a more immunologically compatible donor allograft. However, there remains a paucity of data to guide the use of desensitization in the setting of intestinal transplantation. As a result, in this review we evaluate the existing literature supporting the role of desensi

Predictors of Intestinal Adaptation in Children.

In children, short-bowel syndrome (SBS) accounts for two-thirds of the cases of intestinal failure, and motility disorders and congenital mucosal diarrheal disorders account for the remaining one-third. Children with SBS are supported primarily by parenteral nutrition, which is the single-most important therapy contributing to their improved prognosis. More than 90% of children with SBS who are cared for at experienced intestinal rehabilitation programs survive, and roughly 60% to 70% undergo intestinal adaptation and achieve full enteral autonomy. This article focuses on the predictors of ped

Nontransplant Surgery for Intestinal Failure.

Insufficient absorptive mucosal surface is the fundamental problem in the short bowel state. Intestinal adaptation has been well studied, and it is well recognized that it may lead to dilatation of the bowel with increased thickness of the bowel wall, resulting from both mucosal hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Autologous reconstructive surgery exploits bowel dilatation in short bowel syndrome and maximizes the absorptive potential of the available mucosal surface. Indeed, autologous gastrointestinal reconstructive procedures may be better viewed as optimizing bowel diameter rather than focusing o

Wnt signaling in intestinal inflammation.

Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are a major health burden worldwide. Numerous conserved signaling pathways control tissue injury and repair during colitis, but owing to the complexity of the inflammatory process, their individual contribution remains poorly understood. A key regulatory pathway in the intestinal mucosa is Wnt/β-catenin signaling, which acts as the central organizer of epithelial stem cell identity and maintenance. Apart from this core function, there is mounting evidence that the Wnt pathway is highly interconnected with nu
