INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological data on extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales are most often based on microbiological laboratory isolates and do not consider important clinical data such as infection or colonisation, treatment, and outcome. This study aimed to assess prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacterales as the cause of infection in patients with suspected sepsis in the emergency department based on clinical data. It also examined the number of patients with suspected sepsis who had ESBL-producing pathogens, comparing estimates that were based on laboratory d

Laboratory isolates of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) that utilize CXCR4 as a coreceptor infect primary human macrophages inefficiently even though these express a low but detectable level of cell surface CXCR4. In contrast, infection of primary macrophages by primary CXCR4-tropic HIV-1 isolates is readily detectable. Here, we provide evidence suggesting that this difference in cell tropism results from a higher requirement for cell surface CXCR4 for infection by laboratory HIV-1 isolates. Transfected COS7 cells that express a high level of CD4 but a low level of CXCR4 were infect

Eradication of pathogens from mouse colonies is crucial for scientific research reproducibility and animal welfare. The previously described techniques for eradicating pathogens by rederivation through embryo transfer or caesarian technique can be costly and technically challenging. The objective of our study was to assess the efficacy of iodine immersion combined with cross-fostering for eradicating murine norovirus (MNV) and Helicobacter spp. in laboratory mice. The iodine immersion technique was modified to prevent pathogen transmission and reduce the risk of cannibalism. The hypothesis of

Bordetella bronchiseptica (B. bronchiseptica) is associated with respiratory tract infections in laboratory animals. In our laboratory animal facility, B. bronchiseptica was isolated from 21 of 27 apparently healthy rabbits obtained from a breeding farm contaminated with B. bronchiseptica. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis showed that the flagellin genotype of isolates from the laboratory animal facility and breeding farm was type A, which is seen relatively frequently in rabbits in Europe. To examine its pathogenicity, guinea pigs, rats, and mice were inoculated intrana

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are an increasing global threat due to their ability to cause human disease and their expanding geographical distribution. They circulate in nature between arthropod vectors and vertebrate hosts. Infection of susceptible human hosts leads to harmful developmental and neurological manifestations. Arboviruses have caused recent outbreaks with significant public health implications, such as the Zika virus outbreak in the western hemisphere which caused fetal abnormalities in some infected pregnant women, or Eastern Equine Encephalitis which caused 15 deaths i

Lancefield group G streptococcus is now recognized as a pathogen and has been reported to cause severe infections, including meningitis. We describe the first case of meningitis caused by this organism in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the direct transmission of the pathogen to a technologist accidentally exposed to the cerebrospinal fluid. To prove the identity of the two strains, we have tested them employing the Vitek system. We have also tested 13 other strains of group G streptococci obtained from different sources. Our results yielded 14 different biotypes w

Access to necessary diagnostic tests in support of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis treatment, such as CD4 cell counts, viral load, tuberculosis culture, and susceptibility testing, has significantly lagged the provision of drug therapy in developing countries. This is an outcome of the fundamental limitations in overall access to basic health services in the developing world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Among health services, laboratory capacity and access are particularly deficient, and often non-existent in rural settings. As such, treatment is commonly administered in the absence of diagn

We report here four cases of lower respiratory tract infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Three of them had clinical and radiological findings of atypical pneumonia, while one presented with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). None of the patients had signs of ocular or genitourinary infections. All patients had specific IgM, IgA and IgG antibodies for C. trachomatis during the acute infection, and were seronegative for C. psittaci. No specific clinical or radiological patterns were found. Two of the patients with pneumonia were laboratory workers who w

The rapid and accurate identification of Neisseria meningitidis, a pathogen that causes invasive infections and meningitis, is crucial for its effective clinical management and infection control. However, identification using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry may misidentify other Neisseria species as N. meningitidis, thus necessitating confirmatory tests based on biochemical properties. These tests require high bacterial concentrations that are achieved through subculturing, which can increase biosafety risks in laboratories. In this study, we develo

The absolute laboratory containment of any virus cannot be guaranteed, but a wealth of experience indicates that effective containment of wild poliovirus materials for global certification is technically and operationally feasible. Effective containment is based on the principles of minimal wild poliovirus infectious and potentially infectious materials in laboratories; minimal risks of operations in laboratories and inactivated poliovirus vaccine production facilities; minimal susceptibility of workers to wild poliovirus infection and shedding; and minimal susceptibility of populations to wil

Acute bacterial dermohypodermites (ABDH) are frequent soft tissue infections. When left untreated, they can lead to severe regional or general complications. Our study evaluated the role of Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing (LRINEC) in ABDH global care by early detection of patients associated with risk of complication. From January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2015, 221 patients were included. The prevalence of ABDH was 1.02%. Women were the most observed (115/221), with a sex ratio of 0.92. The mean age was 49.8 years, and the majority was between 45 and 59 years old (34.39%). Farmers (30

Using computerized time-stamps, we compared the turnaround-times (TAT) for urine samples and screening ESwabs of MRSA, VRE, and ESBL carriage in the bacteriology laboratory of Geneva University Hospitals between January and December 2017 (period preceding the implementation of the WASPLabTM) with the same specimen types analyzed between January and December 2019 (period after the implementation of the automation). During both 1-year periods, a total of 98'380 specimens were analyzed (48'158 in 2017 vs. 50'222 in 2019). On the WASPLabTM, all culture plates were imaged at defined intervals each

Human adenovirus infection is a common cause of upper and lower respiratory illness and easily breaks out in schools and the army. In an adenovirus epidemic, a large number of samples would be collected for laboratory diagnosis, and it is urgent to optimize the current sampling strategy. We researched the application of laboratory detection in the adenovirus epidemic and optimized the range of laboratory pathogen detection in the adenovirus epidemic by summarizing previous theoretical achievements, research reports, and experts' opinions and by using mathematical model tools. Under certain ass
