INTRODUCTION: The goal of therapy in all patients with combined orthopaedic and vascular injuries of the extremities is salvage of a functional limb. In this study, we have evaluated our experience with a subset of patients who had a combination of vascular injury and limb fracture.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 192 patients with vascular injuries of the lower and upper limbs associated with bone fractures were reviewed. Of these, 168 were males and 24 were females; the mean age was 26 years.

Ninety-two children with arterial injuries were studied over a 14 year period, 66 boys and 26 girls, whose ages ranged from 14 months to 18 years. Injuries of the sciatic nerve are common causes of pain and limitation in the lower limbs. Due to its particular anatomy and its long course, the sciatic nerve is often involved in diseases of the pelvis or leg. In recent years, magnetic resonance neurography has become established as an important tool for the study of peripheral nerves and can be widely applied to the study of the sciatic nerve. Therefore, detailed knowledge of its anatomy and of the most prevalent diseases affecting it is essential to maximizing the accuracy of diagnostic imaging.

BACKGROUND: Combined vascular and skeletal injuries are associated with a high limb loss rate. One of the major factors resulting in amputation is frequently because the allowable warm ischemia time for skeletal muscle is exceeded before adequate revascularization.
