A verruciform xanthoma of the lower lip and review of the differential diagnosis.

A careful examination of lips is often neglected by the members of the medical and dental professions; yet the lips reveal a heterogeneous group of lesions ranging from congenital abnormalities to benign and malignant neoplasms. Verruciform Xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon benign inflammatory mucocutaneous condition that occurs in the oral cavity which was first described by Shafer in 1971. It is often associated with pre-existing epithelial and/or inflammatory disorder and is characterized histopathologically by papillary epithelial hyperplasia and the presence of foamy macrophages in connective …

Indices to assess malocclusions in patients with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Several indices are now available to assess the severity of the malocclusion in cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) patients; and although it has been quite some time since the introduction of these indices, there is no consensus as to which index should be used for CLP populations. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the available literature on the indices used to assess the occlusal schemes in dental models of CLP patients, with respect to the most commonly used index and the index that most fulfils the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. SEARCH METHODS: Ten electronic database…

Analysis and treatment of cleft lip nasal and palate deformity.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Cleft lip and palate are usually associated with craniofacial defects and nose deformities that alter the facial aesthetic configuration. After initial surgical treatment, further surgery (both nasal and maxillary) is often required to reduce the physical impact in these patients. These techniques should be delayed until the development of the facial skeleton is complete. The purpose of this study was to assess the system used in the preoperative analysis of such patients, the surgical technique and our results after proper follow-up time. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Th…

The financial impact of unrepaired cleft lip and palate in the Philippines.

OBJECTIVES: There are over 96 million people in the Philippines. Close to 77 thousand persons in this country have orofacial clefting. We estimate nearly 64 thousand are unrepaired. Unemployment and underemployment because of the communication disorders associated with unrepaired clefts will affect family income and hence tax revenues. The purpose of this study is to understand the financial impact of unrepaired cleft lip and/or palate on families and identify how that would translate to the Philippine government in tax revenues. METHODS: The incidence of orofacial cleft in the Philippines wa…

Interdisciplinary treatment of an adolescent with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

AIM: The present case report describes the importance of interdisciplinary approach and gives an understanding on management of an adolescent with unilateral cleft lip and palate. BACKGROUND: Failure of fusion between medial nasal process and maxillary process or between the palatal process leads to the formation of clefts. Clefts are result of genetic or environmental factors or a combination of both. Common dental problems associated with clefts includes anterior and posterior crossbites, hypodontia, malformation and abnormal eruption pattern. CASE REPORT: A girl, aged 15 years reported wi…

Concentrations and potential health risks of metals in lip products.

BACKGROUND: Metal content in lip products has been an issue of concern. OBJECTIVES: We measured lead and eight other metals in a convenience sample of 32 lip products used by young Asian women in Oakland, California, and assessed potential health risks related to estimated intakes of these metals. METHODS: We analyzed lip products by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and used previous estimates of lip product usage rates to determine daily oral intakes. We derived acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) based on information used to determine public health goals for exposure, a…

[Karapandzic flap for reconstruction of extensive defects of the lower lip].

OBJECTIVE: To discuss advantages and disadvantages of Karapandzic flap for reconstruction of extensive defects of the lower lip. METHODS: Two clinical observations and a review of the literature are presented. RESULTS: The Karapandzic flap requires only one operating time. The tissue used to reconstruct the lower lip is very close to the resected lip. The functional result is satisfactory, the lips being continent, allowing speech and feeding. The main advantage of this technique is the preservation of the labial sphincter, which is vascularized, mobile and sensitive. The aesthetic result is…

Sialolipoma of the lower lip: case report and literature review.

Sialolipoma is a relatively rare and fairly recently described as a variant of lipoma with salivary elements. Any site within the oral and maxillofacial region may be involved with the parotid gland being the most common location. Herein, we present a case of silaolipoma in lower lip. The clinical and histological features and differential diagnosis are discussed.

A comprehensive review of the genetic basis of cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are birth defects that affect the upper lip and the roof of the mouth. CLP has a multifactorial etiology, comprising both genetic and environmental factors. In this review we discuss the recent data on the etiology of cleft lip and palate. We conducted a search of the MEDLINE database (Entrez PubMed) from January 1986 to December 2010 using the key words: 'cleft lip,' 'cleft palate,' 'etiology,' and 'genetics.' The etiology of CLP seems complex, with genetics playing a major role. Several genes causing syndromic CLP have been discovered. Three of them-T-box transcrip…

It's a privilege to smile: impact of cleft lip palate on families.

In this article we describe prior cross-sectional and longitudinal research conducted with children who were born with cleft lip and/or palate and their families in the United States and internationally. The findings and clinical implications from different times and cultures are synthesized using the Biopsychosocial Model. Our primary aim is to summarize the attachment styles, cognitive, psychological and social functioning, self-concept, neurological functioning, and speech difficulties prevalent among individuals who are born with cleft lip/palate at different developmental stages (e.g., in…

Genetic and environmental factors in human cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate is the most common craniofacial birth defect and its etiology has been the focus of many reports in the literature. It is well accepted that both genetics and environment play a role in the condition, however we still have not been able to translate what have been learned into clinical applications. This paper provides an interpretation of the latest research findings in humans and a perspective for where the field is going. The latest effort in gene identification and the associations between isolated cleft lip and palate and the loci harboring IRF6 (1q32) and 8q24.21 are…
