Diagnosis of pheochromocytoma during treatment of a mandibular fracture: report of case.

A case of pheochromocytoma, which was discovered during the patient's admission for treatment of mandibular fracture, is presented. Pheochromocytoma represents a potentially life-threatening disease, but alsl is a curable cause of hypertension. Therefore, in spite of its low incidence, it is important that the oral surgeon consider it in his evaluation of the hypertensive patient, especially when associated symptoms of sweating, palpitations, and headache are present.

The use of vein grafts in the repair of the inferior alveolar nerve following surgery.

Damage to the branches of the trigeminal nerve can occur as a result of a variety of causes. The most common damage to all divisions of this nerve occurs as a result of facial trauma. Unfortunately, iatrogenic damage to the inferior alveolar branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve is common because of its anatomical position within the mandible and its closeness to the teeth, particularly the third molar. It has been reported there is an incidence of approximately 0.5% of permanent damage to the inferior alveolar nerve following third molar removal. Extraction of other teeth

Clinical outcomes and mechanical evaluation of patient-specific mandibular reconstruction following tumor resection: a retrospective study with finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular defects most frequently result from ablative oncologic surgery and pose major functional and esthetic challenges. While vascularized osseous free flaps remain the gold-standard treatment, patient-specific implants (PSIs) fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing are an increasingly popular alternative. PSIs provide superior anatomical conformity and improved cosmetic outcomes, yet their long-term mechanical reliability and fatigue resistance remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate both the biomechanical performance and clinical outcomes of 3D-printed PSIs for ma

Evaluation of Mandibular Symmetry in Patients With Condylar Osteochondroma Who Underwent Intro-Oral Condylar Resection and Simultaneous Bimaxillary Orthognathic Surgery.

Mandibular condylar osteochondroma (OC) can result in facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The authors have previously demonstrated a novel method for conservative condylectomy and simultaneous orthognathic surgery for treatment of mandibular condylar OC. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate improvement and long-term stability of mandibular symmetry in the treatment of condylar OC. Fifty-six patients with unilateral mandibular condylar OC combined with secondary facial asymmetry and malocclusion were enrolled in this retrospective study. T

Oral rehabilitation with dental implants and quality of life following mandibular reconstruction with free fibular flap.

OBJECTIVES: Bony reconstruction of jaw defects using the free fibular flap and dental rehabilitation mostly requires insertion of dental implants within the transferred fibula bone. The aim of this paper was to discuss results of the implant stability with data on the possible benefit for the patient's quality of life after such treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For clinical outcome of implants, we evaluated 26 patients with a total number of 94 dental implants after a follow-up period of 12 to 132 months. A group of 38 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with free fibular flap co

Multidisciplinary treatment of peripheral osteoma arising from mandibular condyle in patient presenting with facial asymmetry.

While osteomas often occur in the orofacial area, it is relatively rare for one to occur in the temporomandibular joint area. Here, we report a patient who underwent multidisciplinary treatment including high condylectomy for peripheral osteoma arising in the left mandibular condyle. The patient was a 46-year-old woman with the chief complaint of facial asymmetry. Cephalometric analysis revealed skeletal anterior crossbite due to anterior deviation of the mandible, with chin deviation of 10 mm to the right. A computed tomography scan revealed bone hyperplasia in the mesiodistal and inner areas

Assessment of trigeminal nerve function by means of short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials after microneurosurgical repair.

In order to evaluate accurately trigeminal nerve damage and the response to microneurosurgical treatment, a reproducible, objective test of trigeminal nerve function is required. This study investigates the use of somatosensory evoked potentials as an objective monitor of trigeminal nerve function after microneurosurgical repair. We examined 10 patients, all but 1 treated for gnathic disorders, in whom a severe iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve occurred unilaterally. One patient underwent partial mandibulectomy with sacrifice of the nerve because of a malignant tumour. A signifi

Shouldering the load of mandible reconstruction: 81 cases of oromandibular reconstruction with the scapular tip free flap.

BACKGROUND: The scapular tip free flap (STFF) is becoming more popular for oromandibular reconstruction. This article reviewed the early and late outcomes in a larger series over 9 years. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all consecutive patients who underwent oromandibular reconstruction using the STFF at London Health Sciences Centre. Demographic information, surgical data, and complications were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: From April 2008 to March 2017, 81 STFFs were performed in 80 patients. The average bony reconstruction measured 5.4 cm. Bone-only flaps were utilized

Functional outcome in 17 patients whose mandibles were reconstructed with free fibular flaps.

OBJECTIVE: The vascularised free fibular flap is considered to be a reliable choice for reconstruction of oromandibular defects, especially after resection of malignant tumours in the area. This study evaluates the functional outcome of this method. METHOD: From January 2001 - May 2014, 37 patients were treated at the University Hospital of Linköping using the free fibular flap. The authors present the results from 17. This study reviewed their records and used the University of Washington Quality-of-Life questionnaire (UW-QoL), the Head and Neck Performance Status Scale (PSS), and interviews

Osteochondroma in the mandibular condyle that caused facial asymmetry: a case report.

Osteochondroma is the most common benign tumor of the axial skeleton, though it is rarely found in the oral and maxillofacial regions. Reported is a case of osteochondroma affecting the mandibular condyle of a 22-year-old Japanese woman. The patient visited the hospital with the chief complaint of facial asymmetry. She had pain with clicking on her right temporomandibular joint (TMJ), resulting in trismus and facial asymmetry with a chin deviation to the left side. Her maximum jaw opening was 34 mm, with moderate left TMJ tenderness. There was Class I occlusion without open bite. Panoramic rad

Effect of radiation injury on the growing face.

The literature on the effect of ionizing radiations on developing and rapidly growing tissue has been reviewed, and the effect especially on children who received radiation therapy in the Clinic for Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery of the University of Dusseldorf for various tumours of the head and neck presented. Our findings indicate that we do not yet know the minimal irradiation dosage that may cause growth retardation in infants and children. It has therefore been suggested that surgery should be more frequently considered in the treatment of childhood tumours, since this caused less si

The impact of lip-split mandibulotomy on patients treated for pT2 oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma: a study of 224 patients.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck surgeons often face a challenge in order to achieve adequate three-dimensional resection of tumours in the oral cavity, especially in the dentate patient. METHODS: We compared the outcomes of lip-split mandibulotomy and trans-oral access, respectively, in patients treated for primary pT2 oral tongue SCC with regard to the status of the resection margins and the incidence of tumour recurrence. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed a non-significant effect of the surgical technique used to the reported recurrence, F(1, 224) = 0.350, p = .555 and a significant effect o

Diagnostic imaging findings for mandibular metastasis from gastric adenocarcinoma.

A case of metastatic adenocarcinoma from gastric cancer to the mandibular canine region is reported. Computerized tomography (CT) scanning revealed a small round enhanced inhomogeneous mass, indicating an osteolytic lesion on radiographic classification. Although chemotherapy and radiation therapy was performed, the mass increased, and a subsequent CT scan showed further calcifications within the tumor, indicating progression from an osteolytic to a mixed lesion.
