Economic implications of three strategies for the control of taeniasis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of three strategies for the control of taeniasis in a community, in terms of cost per case treated. METHODS: A study was conducted in South India to determine the prevalence of taeniasis by screening stool samples from 653 randomly chosen subjects, for coproantigens. The costs incurred in the project were used to estimate the cost per case screened and treated. A one-way sensitivity analysis was carried out for varying rates of taeniasis, different screening strategies and mass therapy. Further sensitivity analysis was carried out with different m

Mass SARS-CoV-2 testing in US correctional facilities during the pandemic: a longitudinal analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Real-world evidence on the utility of SARS-CoV-2 mass screening in correctional facilities remains limited. The Connecticut Department of Correction (CTDOC) implemented an adaptive testing programme involving serial mass screening with reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR). Data from this programme offer a unique opportunity to evaluate mass screening throughout the pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal analysis of people tested as part of mass screening between November 2020 and May 2023 while housed in a CTDOC cell. We estimated the time to test result and the average nu…

Heuriskance: a novel paradigm for systematic earlier detection of sporadic pancreatic cancer.

Early detection is key to improving survival and mortality from pancreatic cancer. Traditional periodic screening for cancer in an asymptomatic population is infeasible and not recommended for this low-incidence disease. We describe a novel approach we call "heuriskance" (hyou-ris-kance), wherein a systematic search for and 1-time workup of a "heurisk" (hyou-risk) leads to earlier detection of cancer. A heurisk is an early-warning sign with 3 defining characteristics: (1) the individual has a higher-than-threshold probability of having prevalent invasive cancer, (2) it is associated with a mea

Performance of Malnutrition Screening Tools on People With Chronic Diseases: A Bivariate Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition significantly impacts mortality and morbidity in patients with chronic diseases. Accurate screening tools are necessary for the early identification and management of this condition. However, limited meta-analyses on screening tools designed to assess malnutrition in patients with chronic diseases exist. PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of several screening tools widely used to detect malnutrition in patients with chronic diseases in clinical settings. Three tools were addressed in this meta-analysis, including the Malnutrition Screen

Current Challenges in Imaging-Based Cancer Screening, From the AJR Special Series on Screening.

The early detection of cancer confers many significant benefits for patients, primarily by enabling less invasive and more effective treatments and thus lowering disease mortality. Radiology is integral to early cancer detection, playing either a primary or complementary role in screening programs. Imaging-based screening is often performed in conjunction with other screening tests and may involve multiple modalities depending on patient demographics and cancer type. When a screening program for cancer early detection is being developed, both its potential benefits and harms need to be assesse

[Multifaceted health benefits of proactive intervention for obstructive sleep apnea].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease worldwide and is closely associated with cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and traffic accidents. Current OSA prevention and management face three major challenges: low public awareness, insufficient screening vigilance among non-specialist physicians, and a high proportion of asymptomatic patients who remain undiagnosed. Proactive intervention is crucial for reducing the public health burden and improving patient prognosis. This review summarizes the benefits of proactive intervention in OSA patients and outlines future st

Lessons learned from viral hepatitis testing that inform law and policy responses to steatotic liver disease.

Liver diseases account for 1 in 25 deaths worldwide. Owing to the asymptomatic nature across the dynamic spectrum of steatotic liver disease (SLD) and the absence of targeted screening programmes, individuals at risk of progression to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are unlikely to pursue liver disease testing. Historically, hepatitis B and C were the leading causes of liver injury that can progress to cirrhosis or HCC. Global efforts to implement screening and vaccination programmes, expand testing and treatment, and encourage active viral hepatitis case finding followed the wides

Early Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Screening and Management.

With increasing maternal age and obesity rates in reproductive-aged women, gestational diabetes has increased in prevalence. This has generated interest in broadening screening for glycemic dysfunction in pregnancy, to detect both previously undiagnosed diabetes as well as early gestational diabetes. Clinical guidance is limited, however, due to the shortage of high-quality evidence and the lack of uniform diagnostic criteria. This review will provide a summary of the screening and diagnosis of GDM before 20 weeks of gestation.

Reliability and Consistency Analysis of Multiple Instruments for Scoliosis Screening in Adolescent Males: A Comparative Study of Instrument Accuracy.

INTRODUCTION: The cause of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains unknown, largely relies on Angle of Trunk Rotation (ATR) measurements via the validated Bunnell Scoliometer™. While low-cost, non-standard plastic inclinometers are increasingly utilized, their diagnostic accuracy remains uncertain. This lack of standardization may lead to inconsistent results and patient misclassification, necessitating a systematic comparison of these devices against a reference standard. This study evaluates the reliability and diagnostic consistency of four commercially available instruments against t

Trade-offs in diagnostic algorithm, population coverage, and duration of community screening for tuberculosis: A modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Current tuberculosis (TB) prevention and care strategies have failed to reduce disease burden at the pace required to meet global targets. Community screening may enable more rapid declines in TB burden, but evidence is limited. We used mathematical modelling to evaluate approaches using different diagnostic algorithms, population coverage, and duration of screening. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used a deterministic compartmental TB model, which recognised symptomatic and asymptomatic infectious TB (defined by whether an individual reported symptoms at screening), as well as noninfect
