Long-term Retrospective Study of Implants Placed after Sinus Floor Augmentation with Fresh-frozen homologous block.

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze and follow-up implants placed in the posterior maxillary regions previously grafted with homologous bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one grafts with homologous bone blocks were performed in maxillary sinuses, and 121 implants were placed in premolar and molar regions approximately 6 months after the grafts. Patients were followed up for periods varying from 12 to 124 months after rehabilitation. RESULTS: The results showed two implant failures, for a 98.3% success rate during the follow-up period. DISCUSSION: The implants placed had an average tor

Root canal therapy combined with endoscopic sinus surgery for odontogenic sinusitis: Efficacy comparison in a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, often triggered by dental issues like periapical periodontitis, significantly contributes to chronic sinusitis, mainly affecting adults around 50 years old, emphasizing the need for a multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment approach. AIM: To investigate the therapeutic effect and clinical value of root canal therapy combined with nasal endoscopic surgery compared with simple root canal therapy in the treatment of severe odontogenic maxillary sinusitis caused by periapical periodontitis. METHODS: The clinical data, diagnosis, and treatment of 20…

[Surgical maxillary sinus restoration--a routine procedure?].

Between the years 1973-1979 173 operations were carried out at the ORL-Hospital Oldenburg for the rehabilatation of the maxillary sinus. Primary, only 48 patients had indications of Caldwell-Luc radical operation by either purulent or purulent-polypous sinusitis, but 43 cases were operated again because of different complications after primary operation in other hospitals. Due to this fact, the following questions were raised: 1. Were the indications to the intervention right? 2. What is the optimal technique of operation? 3. What are the reasons for complaints after the operation? Caldwell-Lu

Evaluation of the Relationship of Dimensions of Maxillary Sinus Drainage System with Anatomical Variations and Sinusopathy: Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Findings.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the length of the infundibulum and ostium height with the anatomic variations of osteomeatal complex (OMC) and sinus pathology using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT images of 204 patients (408 maxillary sinuses) were evaluated retrospectively. The height of the ostium and the length of the infundibulum were measured. The presence of maxillary sinus pathology, nasal septal deviation, Haller cells, concha bullosa, and sinus septa were analyzed. The correlation between the size of the maxillary sinus dra

Dental Pathophysiology of Odontogenic Sinusitis: Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent oral microbial biofilm-driven chronic inflammatory disease. If unmanaged, periodontitis leads to progressive destruction of the ligamentous attachments of teeth to the alveolar bone and resorption of the alveolar bone. It eventually leads to tooth hypermobility and loss. Periodontitis commonly causes overlying maxillary sinus inflammation (mucositis), reflected on radiographic imaging as maxillary sinus mucosal thickening. While uncommon, advanced periodontitis (stage III/IV) or chronic perio-endo lesions can lead to purulent odontogenic sinusitis (ODS). Thi

Acquired maxillary sinus hypoplasia: a consequence of endoscopic sinus surgery?

The effects of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on sinus and midfacial development remain unclear. The authors report five children who, at a median age of 30 months, underwent FESS for refractory sinusitis. Three of the children had cystic fibrosis, and two had asthma. Preoperative computed tomographic (CT) scanning showed symmetric maxillary sinus development with varying degrees of mucosal disease. At a mean of 42 months after surgery, CT scans were obtained to evaluate recurrent symptoms in the five children. The scans showed unilateral maxillary hypoplasia in four children and b

[Mucoceles of the maxillary sinus].

The term mucocele designates a cyst developing from a sinus mucosa, generally the frontal and/or ethmoidal sinuses. They present clinically as a benign tumor, and their diagnosis and treatment is usually simple. Maxillary sinus localizations are exceptional, however, and raise numerous problems in daily practice. Three cases of maxillary sinus mucoceles are reported.

Autologous Fat Injection for the Correction of Facial Depression Resulting From Silent Sinus Syndrome.

The case of a 59-year-old woman who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for right maxillary sinusitis 5 years before visiting our otorhinolaryngologic department complaining of right-sided facial depression was described in this study. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed right facial depression and retraction of the orbital floor due to a hypoplastic right maxillary sinus. Symptoms and CT findings corresponded with silent sinus syndrome. Facial depression is a rare symptom in silent sinus syndrome and is well corrected by autologous fat transfer.

[Osteointegration of dental implants in augmented bone after bone flap rotation].

The article presents clinical case of a patient with partial secondary absence of teeth and maxillary defect because of vertical alveolar bone atrophy. Vertical alveolar ridge augmentation by osseous flap rotation and xenogenous bone block with 10% collagen was performed. Eight months later 4 dental implants with modified surface were placed in the augmentation area. After 3 months 3 implants showed no signs of osteointegration and were removed. Three week later the patient was admitted to ENT department because of maxillary sinusitis symptoms.

[Pansinusitis secondary to inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor].

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are aetiologically enigmatic and biologically unpredictable lesions. The lungs are the organs of apparent predilection. These tumors have also been documented in a number of extrapulmonary sites including head and neck. Paranasal location is rare. We report a case of a maxillary location in a 10 years and 10 months old girl initiated as an acute pansinusitis.

[Pathological link between teeth and maxillary sinus].

Pathological link between teeth and maxillary sinus. Pathological relationship between the teeth and the maxillary sinus can be explained by their embryological and anatomical relationships. The floor is centered by the apex of antral teeth: premolars and first molars. Any dental disease process may have sinus consequences. Dental caries are the best example. Iatrogenic pathology, including preimplant surgery and benign or malignant tumors are also responsible for sinusitis. Therapeutic for every etiology avoids the complications and sequelae whose forensic incidence remains low.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia, embryology, and radiology.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia has been observed in up to 10% of radiological studies of the face or head. Although this may be a coincidental finding, it has been associated with chronic sinusitis and facial pain. Associated abnormalities of the lateral nasal wall, orbit, and ostiomeatal complex are common. The importance of this condition is, first, in the differential diagnosis of an "opaque" maxillary sinus and, second, as a potential hazard to the orbit of such patients, should they undergo functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

Giant Primary Schwannoma of the Left Nasal Cavity and Ethmoid Sinus.

A unilateral tumour in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses is commonly caused by polyps, cysts, and mucoceles, as well as invasive tumours such as papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Schwannomas, in contrast, are rare lesions in this area (Minhas et al., 2013). We present a case of a 52-year-old female who presented with a 4-year progressive history of mucous hypersecretion, nasal obstruction, pain, and fullness. Imaging of the paranasal sinuses showed complete opacification of the entire left nasal cavity and sinuses by a tumour causing subsequent obstruction of the frontal and maxilla

Relationship Between the Posterior Superior Alveolar Artery and Maxillary Sinus Pathology: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to assess the relationship between the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA), which plays an important role in the maxillary sinus blood supply, and maxillary sinus pathologic entities using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CBCT data from 325 patients (650 sinuses), aged 18 to 55 years, who had been referred to the Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology from 2015 to 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. For the PSAA examination, the axial, coronal, and sagittal CBCT images were evaluated for detection of an o
