BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchial injuries are rare but potentially life-threatening complications of endotracheal intubations or endobronchial interventions. This retrospective analysis discusses the criteria for the operative and nonoperative management of tracheal lacerations.
METHODS: From July 1996 to June 2006, 29 patients with iatrogenic tracheobronchial injuries were diagnosed at our institution. The injury occurred during single-lumen tube intubation in 14 patients and during double-lumen tube intubation in 2 patients. Two ruptures were diagnosed after surgical tracheostomy, eight after d

OBJECTIVE: Iatrogenic tracheobronchial ruptures are seldom but severe complications after intubation or bronchoscopy. Therefore, we evaluated the reasons, the subsequent therapy and the outcome of patients with tracheal rupture, who were admitted to our hospital.
METHODS: In a retrospective study we examined 19 patients (15 women, four men; 43-87 years) treated for acute tracheobronchial lesions. Eleven (58%) patients had a tracheobronchial rupture by single-lumen tube, four (21%) by double-lumen tube and two patients (10%) by tracheal cannula. A total of 47% of whom were carried out under em

OBJECTIVE: Indications for endoscopic transthoracic upper dorsal sympathectomy are axillary and palmar hyperhidrosis, upper extremities ischemia (due to, e.g., Raynaud s disease), and upper extremities causalgia.
METHODS: At present, this methodology relies on (at least) double trocar insertion (per side) and/or carbon dioxide insufflation. Thus, although this approach, compared with the traditional open sympathectomy techniques, it guarantees the smallest number of postoperative complications, it still determines a certain amount of postoperative discomfort as well as a risk of complications

A male infant with a prenatal diagnosis (at 20 weeks' gestation) of cystic adenomatoid malformation was delivered after 38 weeks' gestation (birth weight, 3 kg) and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. During the first few days of life, he developed mild respiratory distress; a chest radiograph and computed tomography scan showed multiple cystic areas in the left lower lobe with hyperinflation and herniation of the upper lobe across the midline. At 3 weeks of age, a left lower lobectomy was performed for presumed cystic malformation. To our surprise the pathology reports revealed pulm

In spite of the great advances of the antibiotherapy and of the respiratory resuscitation techniques, the staphylococcal pneumonia continues to be one of the most severe bacterial pneumonias of the child, fact which may be explained not only by the poor immunogenic capacity of the infection, but especially by the virulence characteristics of the staphylococcus: necrotizing capacity, toxigenicity (complex), resistance to antibiotics, diffusion capacity of the infection (percontiguum or at distance), resistance to phagocytosis and bacterial lysis etc. The etiology (bacteriology and immunity), th

Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes progressive ossification and fusion of the spine, particularly in the cervical region. This results in a rigid spinal column that is highly susceptible to unstable fractures, even after low-energy trauma. Cervical fractures in AS are often complex, extending through multiple spinal segments, and are associated with a high risk of neurological compromise. Esophageal injury associated with such fractures is rare but clinically significant, as the anatomical vicinity of the esophagus makes it vulnerable to di

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Spontaneous esophageal rupture is a life-threatening condition caused by a sudden increase in the intraesophage … th epigastric pain and left-sided back pain following vomiting. A computed tomography scan revealed mediastinal emphysema and an esophagogram showed leakage from the left side of the lower thoracic esophagus into the mediastinum. The patient was diagnosed with spontaneous esophageal rupture localized to the mediastinum and was treated conservatively. However, she had p …

The incidence of accidental ingestion and aspiration of foreign body (FB) is likely to occur. Many FBs are discharged spontaneously, but many dental FBs are often sharp and may remain in the pharynx, esophagus, and stomach, causing serious complications such as hemorrhage, asphyxia, perforation of the digestive tract, mediastinal emphysema, peritonitis, and ileus. We aimed to examine which type of dental foreign bodies can be removed by endoscope. In this study, we enrolled 32 patients who were evaluated at the Emergency and Critical Center between January 2014 and December 2019 and who acciden…

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2005eng
Clinical data, thoracic radiographs, ultrasonographic exams, and histopathologic reports in 13 dogs and two cats with confirmed lung lobe torsion were reviewed. Age of dogs ranged from 4 months to 11.5 years, (mean of 6.4 years) and several breeds of large and small dogs were represented. Right middle lobe torsion was predominant in large dogs (five of eight large breed dogs) and left cranial lobe torsion was more commonly seen in small dogs (three of five small-breed dogs). Two domestic short-hair cats, 10 and 14 years of age, had right cranial and right middle lobe torsion, respectively. Und

Acquired lobar "emphysema" (overinflation) (ALE) is an increasingly recognized complication of advanced bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). To refine current concepts regarding patient management and pathogenesis, we examined clinical and pathological features of six infants with ALE who did not have obstructing intraluminal lesions and who underwent lobectomy after failing nonoperative management. All had severe neonatal respiratory distress and required prolonged ventilatory support (average, 2 months) with peak inspiratory pressures greater than 30 mm Hg and 100% oxygen. ALE developed between

We studied 149 children aged seven months to 13 years (mean age 2.9 +/- 0.2 years) who had aspirated foreign bodies for age, sex, and type of foreign body. Symptoms, physical findings, chest x-ray, and fluoroscopy were compared with different sites of enlodgement. Positive history was obtained in 135 (91%). In 133 children, the diagnosis was made on admission. Frequent symptoms were cough (80%) and cyanosis (27%) following aspiration, while prevalent emergency department symptoms were cough (33%) and dyspnea (30%). Common physical findings on admission were decreased breath sounds (65%), tachy

We aimed to determine the clinical characteristics of patient self-inflicted lung injury (P-SILI)-associated pneumothorax/pneumomediastinum, to reveal its risk factors, and to assess its impact on severe COVID-19 cases. In total, 229 patients were included in this case-control study. They were randomly divided into either the case group or the control group as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The two groups were further analyzed to reveal the risk factors of spontaneous pneumothorax/pneumomediastinum (SP/P). Finally, risk factors for death were analyzed in the case group and the relat
