INTRODUCTION: Disruptions in estrogen exposure (i.e., surgically induced menopause) have been linked to poorer cognitive aging and dementia risk. Hormone therapy use (e.g., birth control, menopausal hormone therapy) has shown mixed associations with cognitive performance, possibly due to limited cognitive test batteries. To address previous inconsistencies, we investigated baseline data from Investigating Gains in Neurocognition in an Intervention Trial of Exercise (IGNITE). We hypothesized that (1) oophorectomy prior to natural menopause would be associated with poorer cognitive performance,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Exposure to air pollution may contribute to both increasing depressive symptoms and decreasing episodic memory in older adulthood, but few studies have examined this hypothesis in a longitudinal context. Accordingly, we examined the association between air pollution and changes in depressive symptoms (DS) and episodic memory (EM) and their interrelationship in oldest-old (aged 80 and older) women.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort data from the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study-Epidemiology of Cognitive Health Outcomes.
SETTING: Geographically diverse community-dwelling

The simplest expression of episodic memory is the experience of familiarity, the isolated recognition that something has been encountered previously. Brain structures of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) make essential contributions to episodic memory, but the distinct contributions from each MTL structure to familiarity are debatable. Here we used specialized tests to assess recognition impairments and their relationship to MTL integrity in people with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI, n=19), people with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD; n=10), and age-matched individuals without any neu

Semantic dementia (SD), one of the main clinical variants of frontotemporal dementia, presents a unique combination of clinical and imaging abnormalities. We describe the epidemiological, cognitive, and radiological features of SD. The distinctive and consistent neuropsychological deficits in this disorder have had a major effect on current conceptions of the organisation of semantic memory and its links to episodic memory, language, and perceptual processes. Structural (MRI) and functional (fluorodeoxyglucose-PET) studies in SD emphasise the role of the temporopolar and perirhinal cortices. U

Emotions shape episodic memories, with emotional context-the affective quality or "hue" of an experience-persisting as part of the event in memory, scaffolding connections between events, and guiding our impressions of the environment. We propose that events encoded in a similar emotional context also exhibit similar patterns of brain activation during retrieval, particularly when such events are negative. To explore this idea, we scanned 33 human participants of all genders using functional magnetic resonance imaging as they completed a two-phase episodic memory task. During encoding, partici

The underlying mechanisms linking age-related hearing loss (HL), and cognitive dysfunction are not well-understood. Traditionally, age-related HL was primarily related to damage of hair cells (i.e., the sensory component of HL) however, growing evidence suggests that the endocochlear potential (i.e., the metabolic component of HL) may also play a role. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the sensory and metabolic components of HL and cognitive dysfunction in 100 older adults. Forty participants were patients with mild cognitive impairment recruited during visits to the Memo

The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated ethnic and racial disparities in health outcomes within the state of Michigan. These health disparities are evidenced by geographic variability; as roughly half of the COVID cases and more than a third of COVID related deaths in the state occurred in the ethnically diverse Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties (New York Times, 2023). However, cognitive health in the context of the pandemic is not well-known, particularly across diverse groups. The current study investigates ethnic differences in health during the COVID-19 pandemic by examining whether there are

BACKGROUND: As research on psychedelics (hallucinogenic serotonin receptor 2A agonists) progresses, it is important to delineate the reliability of supposedly unique effects across this drug class. One such effect is how psychedelics impair the formation (i.e., encoding) of hippocampal-dependent recollections (retrieval of specific details) while potentially enhancing the encoding of cortical-dependent familiarity (a feeling of knowing that a stimulus has been previously experienced).
METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-participants study (N = 20), we tested the acute effec

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) affects early brain development and has been associated with hippocampal damage. Animal models of PAE have suggested that some subfields of the hippocampus may be more susceptible to damage than others. Recent advances in structural MRI processing now allow us to examine the morphology of hippocampal subfields in humans with PAE.
METHOD: Structural MRI scans were collected from 40 children with PAE and 39 typically developing children (ages 8-16). The images were processed using the Human Connectome Project Minimal Preprocessing Pipeline (v4.0.1) an

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a disorder characterized by biallelic intronic (AAGGG) expansions in the RFC1 gene. However, the characterization of the cognitive and behavioral disturbances of these patients is still largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and characteristics of cognitive dysfunction in patients with RFC1 disease using a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, and to evaluate the brain regions involved using 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET).

The functional connectivity (FC) of the amygdala in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its relationship to cognitive impairment is still not well established. Thus, we examined resting-state FC changes in the amygdala among 21 patients with AD dementia (ADD) and 34 individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), compared to 33 individuals with subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), to provide insights into the association between amygdala FC and cognitive decline in different clinical stages of Alzheimer's disease. We conducted seed-to-voxel FC analysis, focused on two cognitive function

Cognitive impairment in focal cerebellar disorders has been widely recognized and is described as cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS). However, the relationship between CCAS and crossed cerebello-cerebral diaschisis (CCD) has rarely been discussed. The present report describes the uncommon phenomenon of CCD in two cases with isolated cerebellar infarction, and discuss its contribution to cognitive impairment. Cognitive performance was examined using the CCAS scale and a battery of neuropsychological assessments. Moreover, the relative distribution of cerebral and cerebellar blood fl

The hippocampus has a well-established role in spatial and episodic memory but a broader function has been proposed including aspects of perception and relational processing. Neural bases of sound analysis have been described in the pathway to auditory cortex, but wider networks supporting auditory cognition are still being established. We review what is known about the role of the hippocampus in processing auditory information, and how the hippocampus itself is shaped by sound. In examining imaging, recording, and lesion studies in species from rodents to humans, we uncover a hierarchy of hip

Chronic cannabinoid exposure during adolescence in male rats induces chronic cognitive and emotional impairments. However, the impact of this form of exposure on offspring vulnerability to stress is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavioural and epigenetic effects of stress in the offspring of male rats whose fathers were exposed to cannabinoids during adolescence. Male adolescent offspring of Win55,212-2 (1.2 mg/kg) treated rats were exposed during one week to variable stressors and subjected to behavioural tests of anxiety and episodic-like memory, followed by an assessme

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with epilepsy (PWE), especially temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), experience impaired memory for personally experienced events. However, current assessments of episodic memory are limited in their ecological validity with a potential to miss detection of subtle cognitive decline. We conducted an exploratory study to determine whether a naturalistic film-viewing task with open-ended spoken recall could detect memory differences between TLE patients and healthy controls (HCs).
METHODS: TLE patients (ages 18-60, fluent in English, not legally blind) were recruited

OBJECTIVE: Episodic memory is impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia but thought to be relatively spared in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). This view is challenged by evidence of memory impairment in bvFTD. This study investigated differences in recognition memory performance between bvFTD and AD.
METHOD: We performed a retrospective analysis on the recognition trial of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test in patients with bvFTD (n = 85), AD (n = 55), and control participants (n = 59). Age- and education-adjusted between-group analysis was performed on the total sc
