Cognitive consequences of cannabis use: comparison with abuse of stimulants and heroin with regard to attention, memory and executive functions.

This review aims to compare cognitive consequence between cannabis, and stimulants and heroin with regards to attention, memory and executive functions. The available studies using brain imaging techniques and neuropsychological tests show that acutely, all drugs create a disharmony in the neuropsychological network, causing a decrease of activity in areas responsible for short-term memory and attention, with the possible exception of heroin. Cannabis induces loss of internal control and cognitive impairment, especially of attention and memory, for the duration of intoxication. Heavy cannabis

Motor and Cognitive Functions in Aging C57BL/6 Mice: Association with Activity of the Monoaminergic Systems in the Cerebellum and Frontal Cortex.

The activity in the open field, short- and long-term memory in the novel object recognition test, and gait features were evaluated in 6- and 12-month-old male C57BL/6 mice. The levels of norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, and their metabolites were determined in the cerebellum and frontal cortex. In the observed age range, a decrease in locomotion speed, impairment of gait initiation and stability, and long-term memory deficit were revealed. In the cerebral cortex, reduced levels of dopamine and its metabolites and accelerated metabolism of all neurotransmitters under study were found. In th

Association between environmental tobacco smoke and dental caries amongst 5-14 years old children in Karachi, Pakistan.

OBJECTIVES: B-cell depletion using rituximab (RTX) has proven efficacy in patients with RA. Long-term effects on the B-cell system after single and repeated treatments are sparse. Our aim was to study the effect of multiple courses of rituximab to evaluate its impact on repeated B-cell re-population capacity. METHODS: Two cohorts, altogether 20 patients with RA were included in an open label extension study with RTX. Cohort 1 received one cycle RTX and was followed for up to 7 years. In cohort 2 patients were studied under up to 5 cycles of RTX. Immunophenotyping was performed before therapy

Loss of Autonoetic Awareness of Recent Autobiographical Episodes and Accelerated Long-Term Forgetting in a Patient with Previously Unrecognized Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Antibody Related Limbic Encephalitis.

We describe a 35-year-old male patient presenting with depressed mood and emotional instability, who complained about severe anterograde and retrograde memory deficits characterized by accelerated long-term forgetting and loss of autonoetic awareness regarding autobiographical memories of the last 3 years. Months before he had experienced two breakdowns of unknown etiology giving rise to the differential diagnosis of epileptic seizures after various practitioners and clinics had suggested different etiologies such as a psychosomatic condition, burnout, depression, or dissociative amnesia. A randomized trial on mineralocorticoid receptor blockade in men: effects on stress responses, selective attention, and memory.

Corticosteroids, released in high amounts after stress, exert their effects via two different receptors in the brain: glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) and mineralocorticoid receptors (MRs). GRs have a role in normalizing stress-induced effects and promoting consolidation, while MRs are thought to be important in determining the threshold for activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. We investigated the effects of MR blockade on HPA axis responses to stress and stress-induced changes in cognitive function. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 64 healthy young men receiv

Effects of chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia on cognitive function in animal models of contemporary protocols: A systematic literature review.

Survival rates of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have improved greatly due to advanced therapies and supportive care. Intrathecal chemotherapy replaced cranial radiation due to radiation-induced neurotoxicity and late-effects. Survivors treated with chemotherapy-only experience neurologic and cognitive problems following cessation of treatment. Very long-term cognitive outcomes remain unclear. Animal models are being generated to assess late-effects of chemotherapy on cognitive function. Although, few address juvenile models of chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) and

Anandamide blocks spatial memory reconsolidation in male rats through a CB1 receptor dependent mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Memory reconsolidation is a process through which previously consolidated memories become temporarily labile after retrieval and require molecular mechanisms, including protein synthesis and degradation, to be stabilized again. The endocannabinoid system, particularly cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, has been implicated in several forms of learning and memory. However, the specific role of CB1 receptors in the regulation of protein turnover during spatial memory reconsolidation remains incompletely understood. Therefore, this study investigated whether cannabinoid receptor activa

Targeting innate immunity for tuberculosis vaccination.

Vaccine development against tuberculosis (TB) is based on the induction of adaptive immune responses endowed with long-term memory against mycobacterial antigens. Memory B and T cells initiate a rapid and robust immune response upon encounter with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, thus achieving long-lasting protection against infection. Recent studies have shown, however, that innate immune cell populations such as myeloid cells and NK cells also undergo functional adaptation after infection or vaccination, a de facto innate immune memory that is also termed trained immunity. Experimental and epide

Minocycline inhibits microglial activation in the CA1 hippocampal region and prevents long-term cognitive sequel after experimental cerebral malaria.

Cerebral malaria is the worst complication of malaria infection, has a high mortality rate, and may cause different neurodysfunctions, including cognitive decline. Neuroinflammation is an important cause of cognitive damage in neurodegenerative diseases, and microglial cells can be activated in a disease-associated profile leading to tissue damage and neuronal death. Here, we demonstrated that treatment with minocycline reduced blood-brain barrier breakdown and modulated ICAM1 mRNA expression; reduced proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ, and IL-6; and prevented long-term cog

Simulation of CO2 flux in floating-leaf vegetation zones of Lake Taihu based on machine learning models.

As an important component of inland waters, shallow lakes are hotspots for CO2 emissions. Due to the influence of eutrophication and aquatic macrophyte, CO2 fluxes at the water-air interface of shallow lakes exhibit complex variability, posing challenges for high-accuracy simulation. To compare the performance of different machine learning models in simulating CO2 fluxes in shallow lakes, we focused on a floating-leaved vegetation zone in eastern Lake Taihu. Based on CO2 flux observations from an eddy covariance system, combined with meteorological, water quality, and vegetation variables, we

Prolonged non-traumatic early auditory deprivation increases hearing thresholds, leads to memory deficits, and reduces doublecortin-positive neurons in mice.

The critical period following hearing onset in rodents and humans is a window of plasticity essential for auditory system development. Additionally, multiple studies have demonstrated that auditory deprivation can lead to cognitive impairments in both animals and humans. Therefore, early acoustic deprivation (EAD) can negatively influence the development and function of hearing and mental processes, potentially affecting the well-being of individuals with early-life deafness. However, there is limited experimental evidence on how EAD impacts auditory processing, memory, and hippocampal functio

Altered synaptic glutamate homeostasis contributes to cognitive decline in young APP/PSEN1 mice.

Non-convulsive epileptiform activity is a common and under-studied comorbidity of Alzheimer's disease that may significantly contribute to onset of clinical symptoms independently of other neuropathological features such as β-amyloid deposition. We used repeated treatment with low dose kainic acid (KA) to trigger sub-threshold epileptiform activity in young (less than 6 months) wild-type (WT) and APP/PSEN1 mice to test the role of disruption to the glutamatergic system in epileptiform activity changes and the development of memory deficits. Short-term repeated low-dose KA (five daily treatment

Treatment with edaravone improves the structure and functional changes in the hippocampus after chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in rat.

This study aimed to find out cellular and electrophysiological effects of the edaravone (EDR) administration following induction of vascular dementia (VaD) via bilateral-carotid vessel occlusion (2VO). The rats were randomly divided into control, sham, 2VO + V (vehicle), and 2VO + EDR groups. EDR was administered once a day from day 0-28 after surgery. The passive-avoidance, Morris water-maze, and open-field tests were used for evaluation of memory, locomotor, and anxiety. The field-potential recording was used for assessment of electrophysiological properties of the hippocampus; and after sac

Schizandrin ameliorates ovariectomy-induced memory impairment, potentiates neurotransmission and exhibits antioxidant properties.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Schizandrin (SCH) has been reported to prevent or reduce learning and memory defects. However, it is not known whether SCH ameliorates cognitive impairments induced by oestrogen deficiency. In the present study, we investigated the effect of SCH on memory in ovariectomized (OVX) and non-OVX rats. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: A passive avoidance test was used to evaluate the effect of SCH on memory. Field EPSPs were recorded in hippocampal slices using an electrophysiological method. In OVX rats, biochemical parameters in the bilateral hippocampus were measured; these include

Amygdaloid kindling is anxiogenic but fails to alter object recognition or spatial working memory in rats.

Kindling in rats produces enduring behavioral changes that parallel the psychobehavioral disturbances frequently accompanying temporal lobe epilepsy. Some evidence suggests that the site of kindling is an important determinant of the type of behavioral changes observed following kindling, although this variable has not been systematically investigated. In the present experiments, the effects of amygdaloid kindling were assessed on a battery of behavioral tests we used previously to assess the effects of kindling in dorsal hippocampus or perirhinal cortex. Three generalized seizures were kindle
