Molecular dissection of the human B cell response against cytomegalovirus infection by lambda display.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a ubiquitous herpesvirus, is the main cause of congenital abnormalities and mental retardation in newborns and is also responsible for severe life-threatening complications in immunocompromised individuals, including AIDS patients and transplant recipients. The disorders generated by cytomegalovirus are closely associated with the competence of the host immune system and both humoral and cell-mediated mechanisms are involved in the response to viral infection. To identify viral proteins recognized by host antibody responses, a cytomegalovirus genome library was cr

Parental attachment, premorbid personality, and mental health in young males with hyperventilation syndrome.

The aim of the study was to examine the predisposing and precipitating factors in the development of hyperventilation syndrome in males during military training in Taiwan. The participants included 110 young males who visited the emergency room of a teaching hospital in southern Taiwan because of an episode of acute hyperventilation during military training. Another 53 males, who had the same military training, and who did not experience hyperventilation or any psychiatric symptoms, were recruited as the control group. The risk of hyperventilation syndrome was increased by the following factor

Choking deaths: the role of antipsychotic medication.

BACKGROUND: An increased risk of choking associated with antipsychotic medication has been repeatedly postulated. AIMS: To examine this association in a large number of cases of choking deaths. METHOD: Cases of individuals who had died because of choking were linked with a case register recording contacts with public mental health services. The actual and expected rates of psychiatric disorder and the presence of psychotropic medication in post-mortem blood samples were compared. RESULTS: The 70 people who had choked to death were over 20 times more likely to have been treated previously fo

Neuromotor deviation in offspring of psychotic mothers: a selective developmental deficiency in two groups of children at heightened psychiatric risk?

As part of a longitudinal investigation begun in the neonatal period, selected neuromotor behaviors and different facets of general mental development were investigated blind at 6 years of age in 64 index offspring of women with a history of schizophrenic, schizoaffective, affective and unspecified functional psychosis and in 95 control offspring of women with no history of psychosis. Compared with the controls, the offspring of psychotics (total index group) showed a significantly increased frequency of both multiple and specific neuromotor deviations. The offspring of women with schizophreni

Birth trauma and brain damage.

Birth trauma is a rare primary cause of perinatal death, occurring at most only once in every 1000-2000 births. As a cause of brain damage and later handicap it is often difficult to dissociate injury at birth from the concomitant effects of asphyxia, growth retardation or preterm delivery. A continuum of reproductive casualty has been postulated, but for trauma is not proven. Among children with cerebral palsy and severe mental retardation trauma may be implicated in a few cases, possibly 1-2 of 1000 deliveries. Vaginal breech delivery has been related to a higher incidence of minimal brain d

Early childhood autism and the question of egocentrism.

An individual's social competence is often considered in terms of his role-taking abilities. In the light of studies by Piaget, it has been supposed that a child's developing capacity to appreciate the viewpoints of others in a social context is reflected in his ability to recognize points of view in a visuospatial setting. If this is valid, then visuospatial role-taking tasks may afford a measure of some relatively "cognitive" component of the capacity to engage in social behavior. Tasks in which subjects were required to make judgments about different and yet related views of a three-dimensi

The Portuguese version of the Peripartum Depression Scale (PDS-PT): a validation study in postpartum women.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: The Peripartum Depression Scale (PDS) is a comprehensive, multidimensional instrument designed to assess DSM-5-TR depressive symptoms across the peripartum period. This study is the first validation of a PDS translation and aims to examine the factor structure, reliability, discriminant validity, and known-groups validity of the Portuguese PDS (PDS-PT) in postpartum mothers. DESIGN/METHODS: Adult mothers (N = 463) with an infant aged 0 to 12 months completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the PDS-PT, the Maternal Postpartum Stress Scale (MPSS), and the Difficulties in Emot

Grandparenting, intergenerational coparenting, and mental health of vulnerable children in Chinese families: risks, resilience, and clinical implications.

In China, grandparents serve as primary or co-caregivers for millions of children, particularly those separated from rural-to-urban migrant parents. This short communication synthesizes evidence on how grandparenting quality and intergenerational coparenting dynamics shape the mental health outcomes of vulnerable Chinese children, including those in left-behind, three-generation urban, and dual-income family configurations. We distinguish throughout between children whose parents have both migrated (leaving grandparents as sole custodial caregivers) and children who remain in triadic parent-gr

Perceptions of expertise and its development among critical care trainees and staff physicians: A qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: In highly specialized fields such as critical care medicine (CCM), understanding how expertise is defined and developed is essential for both clinical practice and education. While expertise has been widely studied, its characteristics and developmental trajectory among critical care physicians remain incompletely understood. METHODS: The qualitative interview study involved purposively sampled CCM trainees and experienced staff physicians. Two systems-design researchers interviewed, recorded and transcribed the interviews verbatim. One researcher inductively coded all transcripts

Help-seeking at the intersection of race and age: Perceived need and treatment access for depression in the United States.

Race/ethnicity and age are well-documented factors that influence help-seeking variables for adults with depression, yet the intersection of race/ethnicity and age on help-seeking is less known. The present study examined the intersection of race/ethnicity (comparing racial minority groups to White adults) and age on perceived need, treatment access, and unmet need for mental health services among adults with a past-year major depressive episode (N = 35,033) using data from the 2010-2019 waves of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. After controlling for age, Black (OR = 0.50), Hispanic

Harsh Parenting, Maternal Depression, and Executive Function in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF), a multimodal construct that captures one's control over cognition and behaviour, is associated with academic achievement and social-emotional competence. Prior research suggests that early childhood experiences and the family context shape EF development. Harsh parenting practices-defined through verbal and psychological aggression-and maternal depression are identified as factors that may inhibit early EF development. We examined the relation between these two parenting factors at child age 30 months and two fundamental EF skills, attention and inhibitory

Comparison of Insomnia, Depression, and Perceived Social Support among Individuals with Amphetamine Use Disorder (AUD) and Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general population, individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) report more frequently to suffer from sleep disturbances and symptoms of depression, and to perceive lower social support. Here, we investigated whether this pattern of mental health issues could be confirmed and replicated among individuals with amphetamine use disorder (AUD). We also assessed the degree of perceived social support from their families, friends and significant others, always compared to healthy controls (HC) of the general population. METHOD: Individuals with AUD attending the Outpa

Exploring the experience of birth trauma from the midwife's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is a complex process, and midwives involved in assisting or witnessing it often experience psychological trauma, which can impact their well-being and professional performance. Psychological trauma in midwives is under-researched, despite its implications for their mental health and the quality of childbirth services. Addressing this issue is critical for ensuring safe and compassionate care. This study aimed to explore the psychological trauma experienced by midwives during childbirth and identify key influencing factors to enhance the safety and humanization of childbi

Stigma, Bullying, and Resilience: Psychosocial Outcomes in Marginalized Adolescents With Visible Dermatologic Conditions.

Visible skin diseases such as acne, eczema, vitiligo, and keloids exert a disproportionate psychosocial burden on marginalized adolescents, particularly among Indigenous, Latinx, and migrant youth. This review illuminates how the cycle of stigma, bullying (both in-person and online), and discrimination is amplified by intersecting cultural, racial, and socioeconomic factors, leading to elevated rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide risk. However, despite the gravity of these challenges, psychosocial distress remains routinely underdiagnosed and undertreated in these populations,

The gender-affirmative life span approach: A developmental model for clinical work with transgender and gender-diverse children, adolescents, and adults.

The gender-affirmative life span approach (GALA) is an innovative therapeutic framework for promoting the mental health of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) clients of all ages. Based in interdisciplinary philosophical foundations, GALA proposes that TGD clients can be supported in psychotherapy through (a) developing gender literacy, (b) building resiliency, (c) moving beyond the binary, (d) exploring pleasure-oriented sexuality, and (e) making connections to medical interventions. Psychotherapy incorporating these 5 core components is developmentally tailored for children, adolescents, yo

Factors associated with Self Rated Health in persons with tinnitus from the general population.

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus, the perception of a sound without a corresponding external source, may be associated with decreased Self-Rated Health (SRH). Most research on tinnitus has been done in clinical populations. We aimed to study factors associated with SRH in individuals reporting tinnitus from the general population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used data of participants of the Lifelines population-based cohort who answered the question: "Do you hear soughing or whistling in your ear or ears?" (N=124,490). SRH was assessed using the RAND-36 item on SRH. Linear regression was u

Sex differences in the inflammatory response to stress and risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes among patients with coronary heart disease.

Stress may contribute to progression of coronary heart disease (CHD) through inflammation, especially among women. Thus, we sought to examine whether increased inflammatory response to stress among patients with CHD is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular events and whether this risk is higher in women. We examined inflammatory biomarkers known to increase with mental stress (speech task), including interleukin-6 (IL-6), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9) among 562 patients with stable CHD. Inflammatory response, the difference between
