Optical coherence tomography angiography in pediatric myopia: effects of myopia severity on retinal and choroidal thickness and microvascular perfusion.

PURPOSE: To summarize current applications of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in pediatric myopia, focusing on myopia severity-related changes in retinal and choroidal microvasculature. METHODS: A narrative review of published OCTA studies in myopic children and adolescents was performed, emphasizing macular, peripapillary, and choroidal vascular alterations and recent technological advances. RESULTS: Evidence suggests that the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) is largely preserved in mild to moderate pediatric myopia, whereas area reduction or morphological changes are mainly obse

Evaluating the endothelial glycocalyx from bench to bedside: a translational framework for microvascular assessment.

The endothelial glycocalyx (eGCX) plays a crucial role in mechanotransduction, maintaining vascular barrier integrity, and facilitating leukocyte-endothelial crosstalk. However, accurately quantifying it is challenging due to fragmented methodologies. As the eGCX is a highly hydrated, labile layer that readily collapses upon chemical fixation and dehydration, reported thickness values span orders of magnitude depending on the specific measurement principle employed. Consequently, relying on single-metric claims risks both false-positive and false-negative conclusions. Compounding this challeng

Two-Dimensional Super-Resolution Visualization of Rat Brain Microvasculature Using Ultrasound Localization Microscopy.

The cerebral microvasculature forms a complex network of vessels essential for maintaining brain function. Diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, gliomas, and vascular dementia can profoundly disrupt the microvascular system. Unfortunately, current medical imaging modalities offer only indirect observations at this scale. Inspired by optical microscopy, ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) overcomes the classical trade-off between penetration depth and spatial resolution. By localizing and tracking individual injected microbubbles (MBs) with sub-wavelength precision, vascular and ve

Beyond the Hit: Muscle and Vascular Tissue Responses to Contact Exposure in Collision Sports-A Narrative Review.

Contact events in rugby codes such as tackling, running into contact, scrums, rucks, and contact with the playing surface may expose athletes to muscle damage known as impact-induced muscle damage. These repetitive impacts to muscle tissue have the potential to diminish muscle force production and delay recovery following contact-focused training and match-play. Repetitive exposure to contacts may also affect the surrounding vascular and neuronal tissues, an area that has received little attention in the collision sports. Depending on the severity and duration of tissue damage, repetitive cont

The Alzheimer's Disease Brain, Its Microvasculature, and NADPH Oxidase.

The deterioration of the brain's microvasculature, particularly in the hippocampus, appears to be a very early event in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), preceding even the deposition of amyloid-β. A damaged microvasculature reduces the supply of oxygen and glucose to this region and limits the production of energy, ATP. The damage may be a function of the rise with age in the expression and activity of NADPH oxidase (NOX) in these microvessels. This rise renders these vessels vulnerable to the effects of oxidative stress and inflammation. The rise in NOX activity with age is even m…

Microvascular imaging findings in infants with bacterial meningitis: a case series.

Bacterial meningitis is a severe and life-threatening disease that rapidly progresses in neonates and infants; prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are lifesaving. Magnetic resonance imaging remains the primary imaging technique for diagnosing meningitis; however, due to its limited availability and cost, ultrasound is often used for initial screening. Microvascular imaging ultrasound (MVI) is an emerging technique that offers insight into the brain microvasculature beyond conventional ultrasound. Here we present three patients with confirmed bacterial meningitis and associated cerebral

Ocular microvasculature in adult Xenopus laevis: Scanning electron microscopy of vascular casts.

The microvascular anatomy of choriocapillaris, iris, ciliary body, and superficial vascular hyaloid system of eyes was studied in the permanent aquatic Xenopus laevis by scanning electron microscopy of vascular casts and was compared with that published in two semiaquatic ranid species (Rana esculenta and Rana temporaria), and the urodelian species Triturus criststus carnifex. Results showed that the choriocapillaris in Xenopus consisted of a dense meshwork of wide capillaries displaying polygonal arrays at the scleral side with venules leaving the centers and arterioles supplied from the peri

In vivo structural and functional imaging of human nailbed microvasculature using photoacoustic microscopy.

Monitoring microvascular structure and function is of great significance for the diagnosis of many diseases. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of OR-PAM to nailbed microcirculation detection as a new, to the best of our knowledge, application scenario in humans. We propose a dual-wavelength optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) with improved local-flexible coupling to image human nailbed microvasculature. Microchip lasers with 532 nm wavelength are employed as the pump sources. The 558 nm laser is generated from the 532 nm laser through the stimulated Raman scatterin

Microvascular imaging of the unstained human superior colliculus using synchrotron-radiation phase-contrast microtomography.

Characterizing the microvasculature of the human brain is critical to advance understanding of brain vascular function. Most methods rely on tissue staining and microscopy in two-dimensions, which pose several challenges to visualize the three-dimensional structure of microvessels. In this study, we used an edge-based segmentation method to extract the 3D vasculature from synchrotron radiation phase-contrast microtomography (PC-μCT) of two unstained, paraffin-embedded midbrain region of the human brain stem. Vascular structures identified in PC-μCT were validated with histology of the same spe…

Acute heat exposure improves microvascular function in skeletal muscle of aged adults.

Acute heat exposure improves microvascular function in aged adults as assessed using reactive hyperemia. The cutaneous and skeletal muscle microcirculations are thought to contribute to this response, but this has never been confirmed due to the methodological challenges associated with differentiating blood flow between these vascular beds. We hypothesized that acute hot water immersion would improve endothelial-dependent, but not endothelial-independent vasodilation in the microcirculation of the vastus lateralis muscle in healthy aged adults. Participants (70 ± 5 yr) were immersed for 60 mi

Mechanisms Associated with the Adverse Vascular Consequences of Rapid Posthypothermic Rewarming and Their Therapeutic Modulation in Rats.

We previously demonstrated that rapid posthypothermic rewarming in noninjured animals was capable of damaging cerebral arterioles both at endothelial and smooth muscle levels. Such adverse consequences could be prevented with antioxidants, suggesting the involvement of free radicals. In this study, we further investigate the mechanisms associated with free radicals production by using two radical scavengers, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Employing rats, the cerebral vascular response was evaluated at 2, 3, and 4 hours after onset of hypothermia. Before rapid rewarming, SOD treatment

Vasculitic Neuropathies.

Vasculitic neuropathies are disorders that result from inflammation in the peripheral nerves' vascular supply, resulting in ischemic injury. These disorders may be a result of systemic inflammation or may be confined to the peripheral nervous system. Causative etiologies include primary systemic vasculitis, vasculitis secondary to other conditions such as primary connective tissue disorders, infectious, paraneoplastic, and drug-induced conditions, and nonsystemic vasculitic neuropathy. Early recognition and treatment of these conditions is imperative to prevent substantial morbidity and mortal

Consensus statement for diagnosis of subcortical small vessel disease.

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is the diagnostic term used to describe a heterogeneous group of sporadic and hereditary diseases of the large and small blood vessels. Subcortical small vessel disease (SVD) leads to lacunar infarcts and progressive damage to the white matter. Patients with progressive damage to the white matter, referred to as Binswanger's disease (BD), constitute a spectrum from pure vascular disease to a mixture with neurodegenerative changes. Binswanger's disease patients are a relatively homogeneous subgroup with hypoxic hypoperfusion, lacunar infarcts, and inflammatio

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide tetrazolium reductase identifies microvasculature activation in muscle from adult patients with dermatomyositis.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work has suggested involvement of the muscle microvasculature in the pathogenesis of dermatomyositis (DM). Our study evaluates whether standard histochemical reactions can identify microvascular changes in muscle biopsies from patients with DM compared to myopathic and nonmyopathic controls. METHODS: Muscle biopsies were obtained from 111 patients, including 45 patients with DM. Microvascular quantitation was performed on transversely oriented 1-μm toluidine blue-stained plastic sections. Histoenzymatic procedures included alkaline phosphatase (AP), nicotinamide adenine di
