Patients with end-stage renal and hepatic failure may be treated with combined liver and kidney transplantation (CLKTx). We reviewed the indications and outcomes of 16 CLKTx performed at the University of Minnesota between 1980 and 1994. The majority of the recipients (87.5%) were young patients affected by congenital hepatic anomalies and concomitant end-stage renal failure. Fourteen were treated with cyclosporin-based immunosuppression and had an excellent outcome: with an average of 6 years of follow-up, patient survival was 85.7%, liver graft survival 85.7%, and kidney graft survival 72%. …

In this study, 105 abused and nonabused women were examined for patterns of adult psychopathology associated with childhood sexual abuse and to test the extent to which these patterns are independent of other pathogenic properties of the family environment. Twenty women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 20 women with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were compared on responses to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Multivariate analyses showed no significant differences between bulimic and OCD women on the MMPI, although a greater number of bulimic women showed significant elevations on several of the clinical scales. A normative sample of 100 patients (59 women and 41 men) from the city of Rochester, Minnesota, and the surrounding rural area who came to the Mayo Clinic for a general medical examination were interviewed in a semistructured format by using a list of questions about childhood life events. An empirical typology of problem drinker-drivers based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was evaluated. A search of the centralized data resource available at the Mayo Clinic for all cases of pituitary adenoma diagnosed in the population of Olmstead County, Minnesota, disclosed an increasing incidence of this tumor in women of childbearing age. Alcoholics were differentiated into two subgroups on the basis of drinking patterns and subjective response to alcohol. Severe drinkers (primary alcoholics) retrospectively reported more symptoms of childhood minimal brain dysfunction than less severe drinkers (secondary alcoholics), psychiatric patients, and normals.
