Revealing the secrets of the body: medical tests as legal evidence in personal status disputes in modern Egypt.

The study seeks to answer the following question: In the field of personal status, what kinds of medical tests have been considered reliable and acceptable by Egyptian courts of law, what kinds have been less accepted, and why? The main finding is that, on the one hand, the judges (qădĭs) have welcomed tests that seek to determine age or to discover physical diseases and/or mental disorders. On the other hand, they have been reluctant to introduce tests to determine virginity and pregnancy tests, and even more so to introduce paternity tests that might bring into light manifestations of moral

A year into the war: Longitudinal effects of trauma, displacement, and income loss on mental health in conflict zones.

BACKGROUND: Research has linked war-related stressors like traumatic loss, forced displacement, and income disruption to acute mental health symptoms. Little is known about how symptoms evolve longitudinally during prolonged conflict. Extending our 90-day studies, we tracked clinical symptoms and betrayal-based moral injury over one full year following the October 7, 2023, attack and ensuing war in Israel. We hypothesized stressor-exposed individuals would report persistent psychological distress and heightened betrayal perceptions one year later. METHODS: A four-wave longitudinal study follo

"The clan carries us": kinship, honor, and the collective enactment of family resilience among Yi households living with HIV in rural Southwest China.

BACKGROUND: While antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition, prevailing family resilience frameworks, often grounded in Western individualism, may fail to fully capture how families in lineage-based societies negotiate illness and stigma. In the Yi communities of rural Southwest China, kinship and collective honor (, to jia zhi) structure the moral world of everyday life, yet their role in shaping family resilience remains underexplored. This study examined how Yi families in Liangshan experience and enact family resilience, with particular attention to the

Ethical dilemmas in continuing pregnancy after a prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defects: a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart defects (CHD) are a significant cause of prenatal and postnatal morbidity and mortality, leading to complex ethical and moral decisions for parents when diagnosed in utero. The decision to continue or terminate a pregnancy after a CHD diagnosis involves multifaceted considerations, including cultural, religious, and personal values, alongside medical, ethical, and socioeconomic factors. This systematic review delves into the multifaceted moral considerations involved in the decision-making process regarding continuing a pregnancy following a CHD diagnosis. METHODS:

An investigation of the specificity and vividness of autobiographical memories and future events produced in response to disgust-related cues among individuals with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: A deficiency in autobiographical memory functioning could be of relevance to the maintenance of an eating disorder (ED). Past research has found that people with EDs have difficulties in recalling specific details of autobiographical memories (AM) and in imagining future events. Our aim was to investigate AM and episodic future thinking (EFT) in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), binge-type eating disorders (Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorders; BN/BED), and healthy controls (HCs) using negative cue words relevant to the experience of being disgusted and morally violated.

"More fatal than powder and shot": dysentery in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War, 1846-48.

Disease caused an enormous drain on the U.S. Army's resources, eroded troop morale, and influenced strategy and tactics. Burnout and Coping Strategies Among Paediatric Oncologists: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric oncologists routinely face emotionally demanding situations, including prolonged exposure to child suffering, ethically complex decision-making, and high clinical workloads. These stressors contribute to burnout, moral distress, and psychological strain, yet their lived experiences remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise existing evidence on the psychological challenges experienced by paediatric oncologists, with a focus on burnout, emotional exhaustion, moral distress, and coping strategies. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Instit

Lived religion and gendered environmental governance: ecofeminism and indigenous cosmology in the Kajang community, Indonesia.

This article examines how lived religion, indigenous cosmology, and gendered moral practice shape environmental governance within the Kajang indigenous community of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork with 27 participants and secondary ecological data, the study demonstrates that ecological sustainability is sustained not through formal institutional regulation but through culturally embedded systems of lived religion and collective moral obligation. Central to this system is the cosmological concept of anrongta, which positions nature as a sacred maternal entity requir

Reasons for Living, Spirituality and Suicidal Ideation Among Adults in a Spiritually Integrated Inpatient Programme.

Parallel lines of research suggest reasons for living (RFL) and spirituality often reduce risk for suicide in psychiatric patients. However, research has not examined the links and probable interplay between RFL and core aspects of patients' spirituality that might buffer suicidal ideation in times of severe psychological suffering. In total, 242 adults entering an inpatient treatment programme in a spiritually integrated behavioural health centre (40% cisgender male; 57% cisgender female; 3.0% non-binary) completed validated measures of RFL (fear of social disapproval, moral objections of sui

Cross-cultural differences in resolving sacrificial dilemmas: choices made and how they relate to judgments of their social acceptability.

Samples of English and Chinese people judged the likelihood that they would sacrifice the life (or health) of one person to save the life (or health) of five people by performing an impersonal action (flipping a switch) or a personal one (pushing someone over a bridge). They also judged how many people out of 100 would consider their choice to be morally acceptable. Judgments by people in the two cultures were similar in two ways. First and consistently with previous work, people in both groups were more likely to sacrifice one life to save five when the action was impersonal; however, they we

Navigating Dementia and Delirium: Balancing Identity and Interests in Advance Directives.

The moral authority of advance directives (ADs) in the context of persons living with dementia (PLWD) has sparked a multifaceted debate, encompassing concerns such as authenticity and the appropriate involvement of caregivers. Dresser critiques ADs based on Parfit's account of numeric personal identity, using the often-discussed case of a PLWD called Margo. She claims that dementia leads to a new manifestation of Margo emerging, which then contracts pneumonia. Dworkin proposes that critical interests, concerning one's higher moral values, trump experiential interests (things or activities one

Retrospective Self-Reported Childhood Experiences in Enriched Environments Uniquely Predict Prosocial Behavior and Personality Traits in Adulthood.

What features of people's childhood environments go on to shape their prosocial behavior during adulthood? Past studies linking childhood environment to adult prosocial behavior have focused primarily on adverse features, thereby neglecting the possible influence of exposure to enriched environments (e.g., access to material resources, experiences with rich cooperative relationships, and interactions with morally exemplary role models). Here, we expand the investigation of childhood environmental quality to include consideration of enriching childhood experiences and their relation to adult pr

Social cognition and depression in adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression has been associated with alterations in social functioning. Decoding and understanding others' mental states and adaptive reasoning are important for social functioning. This study examined theory of mind (ToM) and socio-moral reasoning (SMR) in adolescent girls with and without depression. Within the depression group, we examined associations between relevant clinical features (depression severity, anxiety symptoms and borderline personality traits) and ToM and SMR. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted, whereby 43 adolescent girls (mean age = 1
