Effects of exercise therapy on painful temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions among orofacial pain. Painful TMD condition such as myalgia and arthralgia can be managed by exercise therapy. However, as it is hard to access actual effect of each modality that is included in an exercise therapy programme due to multiple choice of the management modality, their efficacy remains controversial. Therefore, this review focused on the effects of exercise therapy for the management of painful TMD. The aims of this review were to summarise the effects of exercise therapy for major symptoms of pain…

Caveolinopathy--new mutations and additional symptoms.

Mutations in the caveolin-3 gene (CAV3) can lead to a broad spectrum of clinical phenotypes. Phenotypes that have so far been associated with primary caveolin-3 deficiency include limb girdle muscular dystrophy, rippling muscle disease, distal myopathy and hyperCKaemia. This is the first report describing the clinical, pathological and genetic features of patients with caveolinopathy from the UK. Ten patients (six families) were identified via the National Commissioning Group (NCG) service for patients with limb girdle muscle dystrophy in Newcastle. Myalgia was the most prominent symptom in ou…

A Rare Case of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder Secondary to Primary Sjögren's Syndrome in an Older Woman.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that is characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of salivary and lacrimal glands. The extra-glandular manifestations might be arthritis, myalgia, glomerulonephritis, skin rashes, and neurologic involvement. One of the uncommon neurologic manifestations is neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). In the present case, an older woman is reported that was diagnosed with NMOSD secondary to keratoconjunctivitis sicca, which is rare in geriatric practice.

VEXAS syndrome: a newly discovered systemic rheumatic disorder.

VEXAS syndrome is an adult-onset autoinflammatory disease associated with hematologic symptoms. The disease affects primarily males, and leads to death of a significant proportion of the patients. VEXAS syndrome is caused by a somatic mutation of the UBA1 gene in hematopoietic progenitor cells. The clinical picture of the syndrome consists of a number of organ manifestations including those akin to rheumatic diseases, arthritis, myalgia, vasculitis and chondritis.

Immune Thrombocytopenia following COVID-19 Vaccine.

Several vaccines have been developed and are being administered against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Common side effects include fever, chills, headache, myalgia, and soreness at the injection site. However, some rare adverse effects have also been reported. We present a case of induced thrombocytopenia presenting with petechiae and mucosal bleeding which developed as an adverse response after first-dose administration of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Should anyone still be taking simvastatin 80 mg?

A 64-year-old woman who previously suffered myalgia with lower dose simvastatin was given just one high dose of simvastatin and developed rhabdomyolysis. This was a potentially life-threatening complication. Fortunately she recovered with conservative management and did not require haemofiltration. This case reminds us of the risks of statins and the caution that needs to be exercised when prescribing these medications to patients with a history of intolerances.

Rhabdomyolysis induced by rosuvastatin and sildenafil.

A 66-year-old man with diabetes and hypertension using statin was admitted to the hospital with progressive myalgia. He had been on rosuvastatin for five months. After beginning the use of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, he presented with severe muscle pain and maintained penile erection. Several days after interruption of therapy, muscle pain and penile erection disappeared. This case demonstrates the interaction of sildenafil with rosuvastatin might result in myopathy.

Muscle cell membrane damage by very low serum sodium.

A 63-year-old male was admitted with complaints of upper gastrointestinal symptoms with fatigue and myalgia. Investigations revealed severe hyponatremia with elevated creatine phosphokinase levels. Following further workup, it was diagnosed as a case of hyponatremia induced rhabdomyolysis. Because of prompt correction of hyponatremia, his renal function was preserved and myoglobinuria induced renal failure was avoided. The importance of early recognition of this potentially dangerous condition is emphasized.

A Case Report of a Renal Transplant Patient with Progressive Neurological Disorder due to Tacrolimus.

Neurological complications of tacrolimus are usually mild (tremors, paresthesia, myalgia), however, serious complications that result in encephalopathy, convulsions and coma can be seen. Serious complications are more frequently reported following liver transplants and lungs transplants than renal transplants and are typically seen when tacrolimus concentrations exceed the 15 ng/L therapeutic limit. In this article we presented our case of a renal allograft receiver with nausea, dizziness and fatigue complaints.

Lyme disease--part I: epidemiology and etiology.

Lyme disease (LD) is a tick-borne disease that typically presents with myalgia, fatigue, and a characteristic rash. LD occurs worldwide, and its incidence continues to increase. Prevention and early diagnosis based on increased understanding of disease transmission and pathomechanisms are crucial in stopping LD from progressing to its later stages. In this article, the first of a 2-part series on LD, we review epidemiologic and etiologic factors.

An overlap syndrome with features of atypical Cogan syndrome and Wegener's granulomatosis.

A 48 year old women developed serous otitis, scleritis, myalgia, vertigo, polyneuropathy, crescentic glomerulonephritis, general cerebral dysrythmia, hilar adenopathy, and retroorbital granulomatous inflammation. Pulmonary manifestations were absent and antibodies against neutrophilic cytoplasmic antigens (ANCA) could not be detected. The clinical picture was classified as an overlap syndrome with features of both atypical Cogan syndrome and Wegener's granulomatosis. The patient responded to treatment with high dose corticosteroids and pulse cyclophosphamide.

[Biomechanical pathology of the upper limb: a new epidemic?].

Work-related upper limb disorders are one leading occupational diseases in many industrialized countries. The paper reviews the evidence of work-relatedness of the most common upper limb disorders (namely carpal tunnel syndrome, hand-wrist and shoulder tendinitis, trapezius myalgia, hand hammer syndrome). Attention is drawn to the difference in the number of reported cases in Italy and other countries, assuming, as an underlying cause, underreporting of such conditions in Italy.

Colchicine myopathy.

Colchicine myopathy typically presents as painless muscle weakness. This report describes a post renal-transplant patient who presented with pain in both extremities bilaterally that was refractory to narcotic analgesics. He had been on low dose daily colchicine for 7 years. Laboratory, EMG, and biopsy findings all supported the diagnosis of colchicine myopathy. Symptoms subsided after discontinuation of colchicine. Myalgia as chief complaint is an unusual presentation of colchicine myopathy.

Toxic shock syndrome in a patient with celiac disease.

A young woman with celiac disease presented with fever, headache, diffuse myalgia, vomiting, diarrhea and hypotension during a menstrual period in which tampons were used. The clinical picture and laboratory data were typical of toxic shock syndrome. This recently defined entity is rare outside of the United States, and has not been previously reported in a menstruating woman in Israel. The clinical and laboratory characteristics of the syndrome are discussed.

Pain Symptoms in COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 range from mild symptoms to severe pneumonia and severe organ damage. When evaluated specifically for pain, the data so far have shown that myalgia, headache, and chest pain can be seen in patients at varying rates; myalgia and headache, especially, are among the initial symptoms. DESIGN: This retrospective chart review, followed by a descriptive survey design study, was carried out by examining patients afflicted with COVID-19. After discharge, patients were asked about the severity and the body region of their pain, their use of analgesics,…

Pediatric COVID-19-associated rhabdomyolysis: a case report.

COVID-19 is the illness caused by infection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Although myalgia is common in adults, it has not been noted as a common symptom in children. There have been a few reported cases of COVID-19-associated rhabdomyolysis in adults. This case report describes a 16-year-old boy who presented with fever, myalgias, mild shortness of breath with exertion, and dark-colored urine. COVID-19 PCR was positive. His initial creatinine kinase (CK) level was 427,656 U/L. Serum creatinine was normal for age. He was treated with isotonic intravenous fluids containing sodium bicar…

Cobalt hip prosthesis intoxication mimicking an autoimmune disease.

Cobalt-containing hip prosthesis may cause systemic toxicity due to the release of cobalt from metal-on-metal (MoM) joint arthroplasty into the bloodstream. High cobalt blood levels can lead to a variety of clinical manifestations, mimicking other disorders, especially autoimmune, hematologic, and infectious diseases. Our purpose is to describe a clinical case of cobalt hip prosthesis intoxication mimicking an autoimmune disease, with systemic inflammation signs, arthro-myalgias unrelated to overt synovitis, and multiple autoantibody positivity. A 69-years-old woman presented with a 1-year his…
