Traditional moral distress scales primarily measure sources rather than contextualized responses. This study developed and validated the Narrative Moral Distress Scale, a context-based instrument for assessing multidimensional moral distress in nurses and nursing students. In Phase 1, narrative stories and items were generated from previous qualitative transcripts of 32 nurses, followed by expert validation and face validation. Phase 2 involved testing with 291 nurses and 52 nursing students in Taiwan using Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and measurement invariance t

Background: Persistent fatigue is a transdiagnostic symptom that is present in many different medical conditions and diagnoses and is a common reason for seeking health care. Despite a lack of consensus on how to understand and treat persistent fatigue, a subset of patients recover. The experiences of patients who recovered from persistent fatigue have important implications for future research and rehabilitation interventions. Purpose: This study aimed to further improve the understanding of the recovery process for people who have improved function and regained health following three health

PURPOSE: To illuminate the meanings of encountering patients in a suicidal process from the perspective of ambulance clinicians.
METHODS: Narrative interviews were conducted with eighteen ambulance clinicians in Sweden. Data were analyzed using a phenomenological hermeneutical approach inspired by the philosophy of Ricœur.
RESULTS: The main theme, "Navigating a fragile capability," reveals a profound tension within professional identity. Traditionally anchored in technical agency, this identity is challenged by a movement toward vulnerability and shared humanity. Capability in these encounte

BACKGROUND: Muslim immigrants and their direct descendants are a large ethnoreligious minority in many regions, yet their access to palliative care remains under-researched and poorly theorised for practice. Existing evidence points to structural, communicative and cultural constraints, while mechanisms at the threshold of access remain unclear.
AIM: We explored access to palliative care among this population, developed an explanatory model of access dynamics and reconstructed culturally and religiously framed narrative resources.
DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative, multicentre, four-group s

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore how individuals with hernia engage with online peer-support communities and how their shared narratives reflect the experience of living with and seeking treatment for hernia.
METHODS: A qualitative netnographic approach was employed, analysing posts from a large online hernia support group with approximately 8,500 members across more than 10 countries. The group was selected following scoping of alternative online communities because of its size, activity, heterogeneity, and public accessibility. A purposive sample of 26 high-engagement discussion threads

BACKGROUND: Violence against women (VAW) is a pervasive public health problem in Canada with detrimental impacts on the mental health of survivors. The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in the incidence and severity of VAW, deterioration in population level mental health and well-being, and exacerbated barriers to accessing health and social services. People who were already vulnerable to mental illness or people experiencing marginalization across social factors experienced even greater challenges with their mental health.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to understand the mental health of VAW surviv

BACKGROUND: In 2023, it was estimated that at least 65 million individuals had Long Covid (LC). Yet the literature reveals a lack of knowledge on how individuals perceive and experience LC symptoms. This study aims to explore how individuals with Long Covid describe their symptoms across physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioural dimensions, and to analyse these experiences through the lens of the Symptom Management Theory (SMT) using a phenomenological and netnographic approach to spontaneous patient narratives. METHODS: A netnographic study was conducted on 63 selected participa

BACKGROUND: To educate the public on how best to support people with fertility problems, a narrative short film "Ten Things Not to Say to Someone Struggling with Infertility" was created, depicting the impact that helpful versus unhelpful dialogue has on someone with fertility problems.
METHODS: Before and after watching the video, 419 participants from the public were presented with a hypothetical vignette describing a woman experiencing fertility problems and asked about the likelihood that they would endorse a series of helpful and unhelpful statements when communicating with the protagoni

BACKGROUND: Although cancer management in dialysis patients has become a commonly encountered issue, known as "onco-nephrology", few evidence-based clinical recommendations have been proposed. Here, we examined the variation in referral behaviors adopted by dialysis physicians on encountering dialysis patients with signs/symptoms suggestive of cancer.
METHODS: We conducted a vignette-based study in August 2015. We sent a 14-page questionnaire to 191 dialysis physicians, including the representative dialysis facilities participating in a Japanese dialysis cohort (the Japan Dialysis Outcomes an

Modern contraception has created new possibilities for reimagining reproductive norms and has generated new socio-cultural uncertainties in South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo. Using inductive analysis of women's reproductive narratives, this paper explores how women in a high fertility context encounter and integrate recently introduced family planning and modern contraceptive education and services into their lives. As foundational socio-cultural norms confront the new reproductive possibilities offered by contraception, power dynamics shift and norms are called into question,

Women are the fastest growing prison population in the United States. Women who are incarcerated are characterized by significant mental health needs and intense societal stigma. Despite such vulnerabilities, little is known about their experiences or the pathways that lead them toward recovery and rehabilitation. This qualitative research explores the lived experiences of incarcerated women sharing their stories with high school students and their teachers as part of a community outreach project entitled "Stories of Change." Six women were interviewed about what it was like to participate in

Narrative story stem measures are increasingly popular for the assessment of attachment representations among early school-age children. Given their clinical and theoretical importance, disorganized representations are typically a focus of assessment procedures. The Manchester Child Attachment Story Task (MCAST) is one such measure. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the documented reliability and validity of the MCAST with a focus on assessing disorganized representations. Twenty-five studies were included in the review encompassing 1,876 children from

This symposium includes twelve personal, heartfelt narratives about joys, challenges, and, in some cases, trauma associated with labor and delivery experiences. This issue also includes three commentaries on these narratives by 1.) Raymond De Vries, PhD, 2.) Anne Lyerly, MD, MA, 3.) Jason Wasserman, PhD and Nicole Wasserman, MPH. This issue can provide information for clinicians and support staff on ways to facilitate patient and family engagement during this emotionally-laden time for parents. Supporting birth experiences, connecting with patients, involving them in decisions, and recognizing

Conduct Disorder (CD) is a psychiatric diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behaviour in which the basic rights of others and major age-appropriate social norms or rules are violated. Callous Unemotional (CU) traits are a meaningful specifier in subtyping CD for more severe antisocial and aggressive behaviours in adult psychopathology; they represent the affective dimension of adult psychopathy, but they can be also detected in childhood and adolescence. The CU traits include lack of empathy, sense of guilt and shallow emotion, and their characterization in youth c

Research has demonstrated the ability of fictional narratives to educate about social and health issues. Although some entertainment-education efforts have used live theater as a mechanism for social change, very few use social science methods to demonstrate exposure effects. This project used live theater to increase understanding and knowledge about intimate partner violence, a pervasive and costly social and health problem. Audiences watched either a play about abusive relationships-emphasizing psychological abuse and the role of coercion and control-or a control play. Compared with control
