Should patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease be screened for cerebral aneurysms?

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder affecting 1 in 1000 people worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of intracranial aneurysms. It remains unclear whether there is sufficient net benefit to screening this patient population for IA, considering recent developments in imaging and treatment and our evolving understanding of the natural history of unruptured aneurysms. There is currently no standardized screening protocol for IA in patients with ADPCKD. Our review of the literature focused on the above issues and presents our appraisal of the estimated v

Survey of nursing and medical profile prior to deinstitutionalization of a population with profound mental retardation.

During the planning stages of deinstitutionalization, the importance of nursing services must be recognized and given priority consideration in the community placement of persons with serious developmental disabilities. The objective of this study was to survey the medical and nursing profile of a group of nonambulatory, institutionalized individuals with profound mental retardation in anticipation of their nursing and medical needs in the community. Data were collected from the Individual Habilitation Plans of 55 individuals who had resided in a residential facility for individuals with menta

Unmet Needs and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients With Relapsed/Refractory Indolent Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with relapsed or refractory (r/r) indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma (iNHL) live with incurable disease for a long-term, experiencing multiple relapses and treatments that impair their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We aimed to better understand the unmet needs and HRQOL of patients with r/r iNHL. METHODS: This convergent mixed-methods study evaluated patients with r/r iNHL who received treatment. Unmet needs and HRQOL were assessed quantitatively using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed statistically. Qualitative data were collected through face-to-face sem

A period prevalence study of palliative care need and provision in adult patients attending hospital-based dialysis units.

BACKGROUND: Advanced chronic kidney disease is a life-limiting disease that is known to benefit from palliative care. Unmet palliative care need in patients with kidney failure is commonly reported but the level of need among patients receiving haemodialysis is unknown. METHODS: A period prevalence study of adult patients attending two hospital-based dialysis units was conducted. Patient medical records were reviewed using the Gold Standards Framework Proactive Indication Guidance to assess for potential palliative care need. RESULTS: A total of 128 patient medical records were reviewed, 45%

The Supportive Care Needs of Individuals Living With Advanced or Metastatic Lung Cancer Receiving Targeted or Immunotherapies.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer is associated with the highest incidence and mortality of all cancers. New treatments, called targeted therapies (TT) and immunotherapies (IO), offer higher treatment efficacy and fewer side effects compared to traditional treatments but are accompanied by uncertainty and an unpredictable treatment course. There is a paucity of research on the experiences of individuals living with advanced or metastatic lung cancer receiving TT/IO, and even less is known about the supportive care needs of this population. METHODS: Twenty four participants from across Canada participate

Perceived unmet needs and impact on quality of life of patients living with advanced bladder cancer and their caregivers: results of a social media listening study conducted in five European countries.

BACKGROUND: Advanced bladder cancer (aBC) is a significant health concern in Europe and has a poor prognosis. Patients with aBC face numerous unmet needs and challenges that significantly impact their quality of life (QoL). This study aims to analyze social media data from five European countries to address gaps in our understanding of the unmet needs, challenges, and impact on QoL in European patients with aBC and their caregivers. METHODS: This retrospective, real-world study includes public social media posts geolocated in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK, posted between October 2

Barriers to access and unmet needs to neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders care in an Argentinean cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare but severe neuroimmunological condition associated with a significant financial burden. NMOSD is also associated with increased health care utilization, including neurology outpatient visits, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) use, long-term medication, among others. We aimed to evaluate real-world patient experiences in access to care and NMOSD burden in an Argentinean cohort. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used a self-administered survey and was conducted in Argentina (2022). Patients with NMOSD were divided into thre

Estimating the size of a potential palliative care population.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a method for estimating the population who could potentially benefit from receiving palliative care in the last year of their lives, and then apply the estimates to the Western Australian population to ascertain characteristics of these people. METHODS: Three estimates of the potential palliative care population, Minimal, Mid-range and Maximal, were developed through focus groups, interviews and the literature. These estimates were applied to the cohort of people who died in Western Australia between 1 July 2000 and 31 December 2002 by linking death records with hospita

Identifying food environment policies and research needs in Latin America and the Caribbean: insights from the Community of Practice in Nutrition and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (COLANSA).

BACKGROUND: Nutrition-related health issues remain a significant public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where rapid transformations in food systems have contributed to increasing obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Government policies are key to shaping healthier food environments, but their implementation and evaluation vary widely across countries. This study aimed to identify national-level public policies that promote healthy food environments in the LAC region and to outline priority areas for research to strengthen their implementation, from the

Identifying patients with palliative care needs: training healthcare professionals in South India.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes and evaluates a comprehensive training programme to improve identification of patients for palliative care (PC) using the Supportive and PC Indicators Tool - Low Income Settings (SPICT-LIS). METHODS: The 2-day (3 hours each) training was for healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in a family medicine service unit, and it consisted primarily of didactic sessions on early identification of patients with PC needs using SPICT-LIS, case-based learning on its application, familiarisation with general PC principles and ongoing mentorship. The training was evaluated u

[The Physical and Psychological Impacts and Supportive Care Needs of Patients With Cancer Undergoing Immunotherapy and Their Family Caregivers].

New, science-based cancer treatments have proliferated in recent years. Immunotherapy provides new hope for prolonging survival in patients with advanced-stage cancers. However, patients with cancer must not only face their disease progression, physical, and psychological symptoms, but also deal with the side effects and efficacy of immunotherapy. Patients with cancer may experience complex emotions such as fear, anxiety, depression, or uncertainty relatively frequently and may have many unmet care needs specific to immunotherapy. However, articles on the physical and psychological impacts and

The need to prioritize research, policy, and practice to address the overdose epidemic in smaller settings in Canada.

The majority of research and policy directives targeting opioid use and overdose prevention are based in larger urban settings and not easily adaptable to smaller Canadian settings (i.e., small- to mid-sized cities and rural areas). We identify a variety of research and policy gaps in smaller settings, including limited access to supervised consumption services, safer supply and novel opioid agonist therapy programs, as well as housing-based services and supports. Additionally, we identify the need for novel strategies to improve healthcare access and health outcomes in a more equitable way fo

Challenges and Solutions in Evaluation Technical Assistance During Design and Early Implementation.

This case study discusses two federal grant initiatives and the evaluation technical assistance (ETA) provided to the grantees. One program is a multiphase program funded by the Children's Bureau (CB) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families. The program funded communities interested in preventing homelessness among youth and young adults with child welfare histories.
