The robust behavior, the degree of response linearity, and the aspect of contrast gain control in visual cortical simple cells are (amongst others) the result of the interplay between excitatory and inhibitory afferent and intracortical connections. The goal of this study was to suggest a simple intracortical connection pattern, which could also play a role in other cortical substructures, in order to generically obtain these desired effects within large physiological parameter ranges. To this end we explored the degree of linearity of spatial summation in visual simple cells experimentally an

The septum as the origin of a lordosis-inhibiting influence in female rats has been studied. Prior to testing, brain surgery was performed. Some rats were given a ventromedial cut (VMC) just above the anterior commissure, other rats, a posterior transverse cut (PC) or a dorsal horizontal cut (DC) just below the corpus callosum, and still other rats, a bilateral ventrolateral cut (VLC) in the ventrolateral septum and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST). Additionally, castrated females and those with a VLC sham operation served as castrated controls and sham-operated controls, respecti

1. A unitary study has been carried out of mitral and tufted cell responses to olfactory nerve volleys in the olfactory bulb of rabbits lightly anaesthetized with urethane-chloralose. 2. With volleys of different strengths, some mitral cells responded with a spike whose latency decreased considerably as the strength increased (elastic response); other cells responded at an invariant latency (inelastic response). The former may reflect diffuse olfactory nerve inputs to the dendritic tufts in the olfactory glomeruli, while tha latter may reflect input from discrete bundles of fibres. 3. The shor

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Deafferentation caused by cochlear pathology (which can be hidden from the audiogram) activates forms of neural plasticity in auditory pathways, generating tinnitus and its associated conditions including hyperacusis. This article discusses tinnitus mechanisms and suggests how these mechanisms may relate to those involved in normal auditory information processing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Research findings from animal models of tinnitus and from electromagnetic imaging of tinnitus patients are reviewed which pertain to the role of deafferentation and neural plasticity

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss due to the abnormal accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau tangles in the brain; its onset and progression also depend on genetic factors such as the apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype. Understanding how these factors affect the brain's neural pathways is important for early diagnostics and interventions. Tractometry is an advanced technique for 3D quantitative assessment of white matter tracts, localizing microstructural abnormalities in diseased populations in vivo. Deep brain stimulation is a brain circuit intervention that can modulate distinct neural pathways for the alleviation of neurological symptoms in patients with brain disorders. In Parkinson's disease, subthalamic deep brain stimulation clinically mimics the effect of dopaminergic drug treatment, but the shared pathway mechanisms on cortex - basal ganglia networks are unknown. To address this critical knowledge gap, we combined fully invasive neural multisite recordings in patients undergoing deep brain stimulation surgery with normative MRI-based whole-brain connectomics. Our findings demonstr…

Pancreatic β cells are regulated by integrative neural signals beyond simple autonomic efferent control. Emerging evidence highlights the critical roles of afferent nerve signals and the gut-liver-brain-pancreas network in regulating β cells. Harnessing these intrinsic neural pathways may offer innovative therapeutic strategies for restoring β cell function and mass.

Sphincter continence and sexual function require co-ordinated activity of autonomic and somatic neural pathways, which communicate at several levels in the human pelvis. However, classical dissection approaches are only of limited value for the determination and examination of thin nerve fibres belonging to autonomic supralevator and somatic infralevator pathways. In this study, we aimed to identify the location and nature of communications between these two pathways by combining specific neuronal immunohistochemical staining and three-dimensional reconstruction imaging. We studied 14 normal h…

A number of aspects of neural control are potentially important in the control of bladder function, including both sensory and motor and peripheral and central pathways. It is likely that a combination of disorders of both central and peripheral neural mechanisms is important in the genesis of urgency and the other symptoms of the overactive bladder (OAB). Given the number of potential pathways involved, potential pharmacologic targets for OAB exist in the CNS (central nervous system; cerebral cortex, midbrain, spinal cord) and periphery (LUT; lower urinary tract). Antimuscarinics are still th

Neural crest cells are among the most migratory cells in the vertebrate embryo. They initially arise within the forming neural tube, the precursor to the brain and spinal cord, but then migrate away by undergoing an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Different neural crest populations exist along the body axis that differ in their flavor of EMT, migratory pathways, and cell types into which they differentiate. In the head region, neural crest cells interact with ectodermal placodal cells, another migratory cell type unique to vertebrates, that form sensory structures of the head. Here

The Hedgehog signaling pathway is essential for many aspects of normal embryonic development, including formation and patterning of the neural tube. Absence of the sonic hedgehog (shh) ligand is associated with the midline defect holoprosencephaly, whereas increased Shh signaling is associated with exencephaly and spina bifida. To complicate this apparently simple relationship, mutation of proteins required for function of cilia often leads to impaired Shh signaling and to disruption of neural tube closure. In this article, we review the literature on Shh pathway mutants and discuss the relati

The peripheral nervous system derives mainly from the neural crest both in the head and trunk. Using markers such as fibronectin (FN), neural cell-adhesion molecule (NCAM), the nucleolar marker for quail cells in chimaeric embryos, and NC-1, a monoclonal antibody specific to crest cells and their neural derivatives, we have attempted to reconstruct the processes that lead to the formation of peripheral ganglia. Our observations allow us to propose a model of the formation of ganglia based on morphogenetic movements and on variations of crest cell adhesiveness. In most cases, crest cells migrat

The olfactory system allows animals to navigate in their environment to feed, mate, and escape predators. It is well established that odorant exposure or electrical stimulation of the olfactory system induces stereotyped motor responses in fishes. However, the neural circuitry responsible for the olfactomotor transformations is only beginning to be unraveled. A neural substrate eliciting motor responses to olfactory inputs was identified in the lamprey, a basal vertebrate used extensively to examine the neural mechanisms underlying sensorimotor transformations. Two pathways were discovered fro

We used retrograde transneuronal transport of rabies virus from the rat kidney to identify the areas of the cerebral cortex that are potential sources of central commands for the neural regulation of this organ. Our results indicate that multiple motor and nonmotor areas of the cerebral cortex contain output neurons that indirectly influence kidney function. These cortical areas include the primary motor cortex (M1), the rostromedial motor area (M2), the primary somatosensory cortex, the insula and other regions surrounding the rhinal fissure, and the medial prefrontal cortex. The vast majorit

Field-evoked potentials from the main olfactory bulb in response to stimulation of the olfactory nerve and lateral olfactory tract were measured without and with conditioning stimulation of the locus coeruleus noradrenergic system. The locus coeruleus conditioning stimulus suppressed or inhibited the late components of the olfactory bulb potential evoked by orthodromic olfactory nerve stimulation; this inhibitory effect was suppressed by the microinjection of the alpha-adrenergic blocker prazosin into the olfactory bulb. Results indicate that noradrenergic fibers projecting from the locus coer

Descending neural pathways to the spinal cord plays vital roles in motor control. They are often damaged by brain injuries such as stroke and trauma, which lead to severe motor impairments. Due to the limited capacity for regeneration of neural circuits in the adult central nervous system, currently no essential treatments are available for complete recovery. Notably, accumulating evidence shows that residual circuits of the descending pathways are dynamically reorganized after injury and contribute to motor recovery. Furthermore, recent technological advances in cell-type classification and m…

In mammals, olivocochlear neurons in the superior olivary complex project to the cochlea, providing input to outer hair cells and auditory afferents contacting inner hair cells. In the rat it has been demonstrated that olivocochlear neurons receive noradrenergic input, arising from the locus coeruleus and it has been demonstrated in this species using in vitro brain slices that noradrenaline exerts a direct, mostly excitatory effect on an olivocochlear subpopulation. The guinea pig is a more commonly used animal in auditory physiology than the rat and anatomical data on noradrenaline in the au

The ventral striatum is considered to be that portion of the striatum associated with the limbic system by virtue of its afferent connections from allocortical and mesolimbic areas as well as from the amygdala. The efferent projections from this striatal region in the primate were traced by using 3H amino acids and Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin (PHA-L). Particular attention was paid to the topographic organization of terminal fields in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra, the projections to non-extrapyramidal areas, the relationship between projections from the nucleus accumbens and
