The Swedish model of health dialogues, a combined individual- and community-based primary preventive program for cardiovascular disease, is associated with reduced mortality: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural risk factors are key determinants of premature death. The Swedish model of health dialogues, which has been developed since 1985, aims to promote healthy behaviours, for prevention of cardiovascular disease, by inviting everyone in specific age groups to primary care for health dialogues combined with community-oriented activities. The health dialogue was performed by trained nurses, based on individual results from questionnaires on health behaviors and results of physiological measures, using visual pedagogic tools and motivational interviewing techniques. The communi

Community health-care staff's experiences of support to prevent type 2 diabetes among people with psychosis: an interview study with health staff.

The aim of the study was to describe mental health staff experiences of giving support to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) among people with psychosis in community psychiatry. A qualitative interview study with a purposeful sample of 12 community health staff was conducted. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results show how staff reported continuously supporting people with psychosis to adapt to healthy lifestyles, but stated that support is not given until after a person becomes overweight or is diagnosed with type 2 DM. Support was described as a never-ending pr

Taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages: Perspectives of adults and nursing practitioners in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: High sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption has been linked to the rising prevalence of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in South Africa. In April 2018, the country introduced an SSB tax-known as the Health Promotion Levy (HPL)-as a fiscal measure to reduce excessive sugar consumption and curb the rise of overweight, obesity, and NCDs. Although national evidence indicates product reformulation, community-level awareness and perceptions, particularly in low-socioeconomic settings, remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess adults' awareness, beliefs, and self-reported be

Conflict resolution styles: a comparison of assisted living and nursing home facilities.

In this exploratory study, the authors investigated how interpersonal conflict is resolved in assisted living and nursing home facilities. In particular, the authors examined whether conflict resolution styles differed between type of facility and between residents and staff in each type of facility. Four focus groups were conducted--two with residents and two with staff from each type of facility. The focus groups centered on discussing the occurrence of conflict and how each participant handled it. Discourse analysis was employed to identify participants' use of three styles of conflict reso

Inter-rater reliability of the Oral Assessment Guide for oral cancer patients between nurses and dental hygienists: the difficulties in objectively assessing oral health.

PURPOSE: Perioperative oral care is effective for the prevention and reduction of complications following surgery. However, oral cancer patients' oral health is often poor. During hospitalization, oral cancer patients frequently receive oral care from ward nurses as well as professional oral care from dental hygienists. Maintenance of good oral hygiene in these patients ideally requires cooperation between nurses and dental hygienists. Consequently, communication tools used to share information about the status of patients' oral health are needed. One such tool is the Oral Assessment Guide (OA

Stressors, manifestations and course of COVID-19 related distress among public sector nurses and midwives during the COVID-19 pandemic first year in Tasmania, Australia.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers has been established, linking workplace factors with high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia and burnout. Less established is how COVID-19 affects both work, home and social life of nurses and midwives concurrently. This study describes the prevalence and severity of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and insomnia and examines their associations with stressors within the work, home and social environment, among nurses and midwives. A longitudinal, mixed-methods, online survey explor

Primary care for the urban poor in India during the pandemic: Uninterrupted management of non-communicable diseases and home-based care of patients with COVID-19 infection.

PROBLEM: The two waves of COVID-19 severely affected the healthcare system in India. The government responded to the first wave with a strict nationwide lockdown which disrupted primary care, including the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The second wave overwhelmed healthcare facilities leading to inadequate access to hospital services. Collectively, these issues required urgent responses, including the adaptation of primary care. APPROACH: The Low-Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) of Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC) has a network of community volunteers, community heal

Enhancing Nursing Care in Monkeypox (Mpox) Patients: Differential Diagnoses, Prevention Measures, and Therapeutic Interventions.

Monkeypox (Mpox), a rare zoonotic viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, has been gaining attention due to its potential for human-to-human transmission and its clinical resemblance to other poxvirus infections, such as smallpox and chickenpox. Enhancing nursing care for monkeypox patients is imperative to manage and contain its spread effectively. This review analyzes the key aspects of enhancing nursing care in monkeypox patients, focusing on differential diagnoses, prevention measures, and therapeutic interventions. Differential diagnosis is crucial in terms of the early recognition

Impact of Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Training on Central Line Placement in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Central venous catheters are placed in the emergency department (ED) when difficult peripheral access limits care or when critical medications require central access because of their sclerotic nature or incompatibility with other drugs. Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (IV) access offers a less invasive alternative. We evaluated whether implementation of a structured ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous training program for ED nurses and technicians was associated with changes in ED central venous catheter use. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review at ou

Older people living in nursing homes fulfil the criteria to be considered as geriatric patients, but they often do not have met their health care needs. Current deficits appeared as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. The need to improve the coordination between hospitals and nursing homes emerged, and in Madrid it materialized with the implantation of Liaison Geriatrics teams or units at public hospitals. The Sociedad Española de Geriatría y Gerontología has defined the role of the geriatricians in the COVID-19 pandemic and they have given guidelines about prevention, early detection, isolation an

Traditional practices in the postpartum period among Syrian refugee and Turkish women: A comparative study.

In this study, we examined the use of traditional postpartum practices among Turkish and Syrian refugee women within the framework of Transcultural Nursing Theory. Data were collected from 260 women through face-to-face questionnaires on sociodemographic characteristics, reproductive history, and traditional practices. Our results showed cultural differences: Turkish women often sought professional care, obtained postpartum information from nurses or midwives, and practiced rituals such as the forty-day bath, yellow cloth covering, and religious ceremonies. Syrian women reported more pregnanci

LGBTQIA+ Competence: A Pedagogical Paradigm Shift in Graduate Nursing Education.

BACKGROUND: The omission of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) content in graduate nursing education leaves people who identify as sexually or gender diverse (SGD) with poorer health across the life span and a 12-year shorter life expectancy relative to heteronormative counterparts. METHOD: An educational intervention was paired with an optional academic-community-based clinical immersion in LGBTQIA+ health with the goal of improving health equity for people who identify as SGD.
