Living with the consequences of rectal cancer treatment, with symptoms that can include bowel dysfunction, can be difficult. Patients need the tools to self‑manage these symptoms and they also need information and support to do so. Using information gained from patients and healthcare specialists it was possible to gain a deeper understanding of what patients want to know about low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). Although each individual will have differing symptoms, goals and treatment preferences, the two LARS toolkits, which are described in this article, can assist the nurse to improve

BACKGROUND: Penicillin allergy testing (PAT) can decrease the use of unnecessary antibiotics by clarifying who is truly allergic.
OBJECTIVES: This article describes the development and implementation of an oncology outpatient nurse-driven PAT program.
METHODS: A nurse-driven program, initiated with allergy screening at the first encounter, was designed to identify patients with oncologic diagnoses eligible for PAT. Once verified eligible, patients undergo a three-step testing process (scratch test, intradermal injection, and IV challenge dose) administered by the infusion nurse.
FINDINGS: F

The goal of this article is to demystify the process that healthcare providers must follow when working with homeless patients who sustain injuries or exhibit illnesses that necessitate rehabilitation care. Observations made over a period of more than 12 years at an inner-city medical/psychiatric nurse-managed free clinic that delivers cutting-edge services and educates multidisciplinary students to care for disenfranchised populations led the author to several conclusions: homeless people frequently lose their identity as individuals when facing healthcare providers; previous negative percept

Nurses working with the elderly encounter many complex and potentially stressful care situations. Nowhere is this more true than for nursing home staff who work in highly demanding, labor- and client-intensive jobs. A number of factors contribute to the high levels of stress found among nurses who work with the elderly, including continual exposure to physical and emotional pathology and death, and conflict with families, co-workers, supervisors, and representatives from other departments or professions (Goldin, 1985; Klus, 1980). When the stress level in a long-term care facility becomes over

AIM: To highlight the need for a shift to family-focused care and to outline how this transition should be developed and implemented through close collaboration between clinical practice and research.
DESIGN: Position paper.
METHOD: Members of Family Health in Europe-Research in Nursing (FAME-RN) developed the position paper through an iterative process informed by selected literature, established care models and collective expertise in family nursing. The paper examines distinctions between patient-centred, person-centred, family-centred and family-focused care and considers key barriers, e

AIM: To map how simulation-based education supports the development of critical thinking skills required for nurses to recognize delirium in clinical practice.
DESIGN: A scoping review guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley, refined by Levac and colleagues.
METHODS: Two reviewers independently screened and extracted data to identify studies evaluating simulation-based education designed to strengthen nurses' delirium recognition and associated critical thinking processes. A narrative approach was used to chart and synthesize findi

BACKGROUND: The detrimental effect of stigma on healthcare for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is well-established, often resulting in social distance and diminished helping behavior tendencies. However, contemporary neuroscience reconceptualizes addiction as a brain disease, potentially altering emotional responses to stigma. This study examines a seemingly paradoxical possibility: that under specific conditions, perceived stigma is primarily associated with sympathy (rather than anger or fear), which in turn is linked to helping behavior tendencies among nurses.
METHODS: A cro

People with long-term psychiatric disorders often display complex behaviours that cannot be fully explained by existing categories in diagnostic classification systems. As a result, translating such symptom profiles into truly person-centred and recovery-oriented care remains a challenge. This article explores how symptom-focused observation through transdiagnostic dimensions can be integrated within person-centred psychiatric nursing, and oriented toward meaning-making and recovery. A narrative literature approach was used, based on an analysis of theoretical frameworks such as the Research D

This article presents an audit tool for the evaluation of practice relating to urinary tract infection in hospital patients with indwelling urethral catheters. It has been formulated primarily because urinary tract infection is a known complication of catheterization, and because studies have shown practitioners' knowledge in this area to be poor. Although health professionals have an obligation to ensure their practice is evidence based, this requires substantial time and skills in critical appraisal. The standard presented here is based on evidence from an extensive literature review on how

BACKGROUND: Case-control studies have demonstrated that screening by sigmoidoscopy is effective in reducing mortality from colorectal cancer. If nurses performed screening examinations, more patients could be screened and, at current income levels, at a lower cost.
METHODS: Two registered nurses and two licensed practical nurses learned to perform examinations with the flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscope in order to screen patients for colorectal tumors. They performed 1881 independent examinations of outpatients more than 45 years of age. During the same period, 730 examinations were performed

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common of all the anemias and can be created easily once it is diagnosed. Diagnosis is a multistep procedure since there are many other clinical entities that have similar symptomatology and physical findings. The history and physical examination can provide clues to additional procedures or tests that may need to be ordered. If anemia is identified as the cause of symptoms, then the type of anemia must be differentiated. When iron deficiency is confirmed, the underlying pathology must be identified if treatment is to be successful. Successful treatment requi

BACKGROUND: Discrepancies between academic nursing education and the realities of clinical practice may contribute to challenges during the transition from student to professional nurse. To address this, many countries and hospitals have implemented clinical introduction programmes for newly graduated nurses. However, limited knowledge exists regarding how these programmes influence nurses' experiences of transitioning into their professional role over time.
OBJECTIVES: This study seeks to explore the lived experiences of nurses one year after completing a clinical nursing introduction progra

BACKGROUND: The term delirium has been defined in medical diagnosis criteria as a multidimensional disorder, and the term acute confusion is included in nursing classifications. Delirium can be a serious complication assessed in a patient after a surgical procedure. Still, the patient's delirium frequently remains unrecognised. Care of patients with delirium after surgical procedure is complex, and it challenges nursing expertise. From the nurses' viewpoint, delirium is associated with ambiguity of concepts and lack of knowledge. Therefore, reseach on how nurses perceive patients with delirium

How parents sustain care for children with complex chronic conditions remains undertheorized. Using Rodgers' evolutionary method, we analyzed parental adaptability across 25 articles. Our analysis conceptualized parental adaptability as a parent-enacted, bivalent caregiving process in which responsiveness, balancing, and care management operate iteratively across parent, family, and social system levels as child needs change. Adaptability may support child functioning, family adjustment, and care continuity, yet coincide with unrelieved psychological, physical, and relational strain for parent

The life-transforming experience of overcoming spasmodic torticollis compelled the author to write the following personal account. The author, who triumphed over this debilitating disease, is now an advocate of holistic nursing practices that motivate patients through a genuine concern for patient well-being, community, and humanity. The author describes her personal experience of grief and the grieving process; the healing effects of crying; and her selection of the complementary and alternative therapies of prayer, music, and massage that became instrumental in finding a pathway to recovery.

Twenty-two patients underwent 23 femoral and tibial lengthenings by the Wagner technique from 1977 to 1987. Average length gained was 5.8 and 5.2 cm, respectively. Long hospitalization in addition to multiple operative procedures and a high complication rate created a significant psychological impact. Fourteen of 22 patients experienced psychological problems, primarily adjustment disorders, all of which resolved without long-term sequelae. Parental/family and nursing staff support were identified as the most important during the lengthening process. Advances in limb lengthening techniques may

Background/Objectives: Operating room nurse scheduling is a complex healthcare optimization problem. Operating room settings are particularly challenging because permanent and subcontracted nurses operate under complex 16 h and 24 h shift structures, with continuous surgical coverage requirements and recovery-period requirements. To our knowledge, few existing models simultaneously integrate nurse preferences, recovery-period requirements, and heterogeneous shift structures within a unified goal programming framework. This study aims to develop and implement a goal programming model that incor

BACKGROUND: Pressures on the global nursing education workforce and a growing shortage of clinical educators in surgical settings have placed preceptorship models at the heart of education. Viewing nursing education as a "revenue-generating commodity" raises concerns regarding the erosion of academic identity and the risk of disciplinary expertise being reduced to a technical craft.
AIM: This study aimed to describe the effects of the mentorship model in surgical nursing education on academic identity, pedagogical processes, and workforce sustainability, based on the perceptions of academicia
