OBJECTIVES: Osteochondromas are frequently found in the general skeleton, but are rare in the mandibular condyle. Radiographically, most reports describe osteochondromas as a mushroom-shaped bony enlargement capped with cartilage on the condylar surface. However, the radiographic appearance of this lesion on the panoramic radiograph has rarely been studied. The purpose of this article is to increase the radiographic knowledge of mandibular condylar osteochondroma and facilitate making an exact diagnosis through observing the lesional appearance on panoramic radiograph.
METHODS: The panoramic

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis is one of the dysplasias of endochondral bone formation. We report a patient with this condition combined with lumbar spinal stenosis and intervertebral disc herniation. This coexistence has not been previously reported in the medical literature. The possible mechanisms of this clinical association is discussed.

The development of an anterior open bite in four patients with facial arthromyalgia is described. There were radiological signs of condylar erosion in three of these cases. It is proposed that the pre-senile destructive arthropathy of the temporomandibular joint, seen in a small proportion of patients with facial arthromyalgia, results from lysis of articular cartilage and bone, secondary to an inflammatory process initiated by the local release of neuropeptides. Occlusal changes, including anterior open bite, may occur if the destructive arthropathy is severe and outstrips dentoalveolar compe

Present extent of total hip prostheses, protracted course of first operations lead to pathological studies on local tissue reactions, sign of the failure or of the damaging of the artificial hip. Another pathology, often as intricate, is observed after more conservative surgery: high femoral osteotomies, cup arthroplasties, femoral metallic prostheses. Failure of an high femoral osteotomy shows a running of osteoarthritic lesions the topography of which is always modified by the new orientation of the articular bearing segment. Osteosclerosis, osteoarthritic cysts may develop on a preexisting …

Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF beta-1) is a potent inducer of fibrosis and has been shown to be essential for the development of bone marrow fibrosis in an animal model of idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF). IMF belongs to the Philadelphia chromosome negative chronic myeloproliferative disorders (Ph(-) CMPD). Megakaryocytes and platelets have been suggested as the major cellular source of TGF beta-1 in IMF. The osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor osteoprotegerin (OPG) seems to be regulated by TGF beta-1 and substantial involvement of OPG expression in the process of osteosclerosis in IMF …

A cohort of 101 patients were treated with enteric-coated sodium fluoride tablets and calcium supplements. Vitamin D was also given in supra … ed, or that a fluoride-related complication is impending or has occurred (e.g., a stress fracture). Osteosclerosis was achieved in 69% of the cases who had a radiological followup of at least four years (average period of appearance: 1.8 years). Stress fractures in the lower limbs occurred in 17 patients, almost exclusively in females, and appeared on average 2. …

BACKGROUND: Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is a rare chronic autoinflammatory syndrome affecting mainly children and young adults. The natural history of the disease is marked by recurrent pain as the mainstay of inflammatory outbreaks. Typical radiographic findings are osteosclerosis and hyperostosis of the medial clavicle, sternum and first rib. Compression of the brachial plexus is exceedingly rare and one of the few surgical indications. Literature on total clavicle reconstruction is scarce. While claviclectomy alone has been associated with fair functional and cosmetic outcomes,…

BACKGROUND: Osteosclerosis (OSC) is a rarely studied complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of high bone mineral density (BMD) and its radiological features in adult SCD patients.
METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted from May 2007 to May 2016 in consecutive patients with steady-state SCD at two university hospitals. The BMD of the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and right femoral neck was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Clinical, laboratory and radiographic data were recorded. High B…

Bone fluoride content (BFC) was measured and histomorphometric analysis of undecalcified sections was performed in transiliac biopsy cores from 29 patients (16 men, 13 women, aged 51 +/- 17 years) suffering from skeletal fluorosis due to chronic exposure to fluoride. The origin of the exposure, known in 20 patients, was either hydric (endemic or sporadic) or industrial, or in a few cases iatrogenic. Measured on calcined bone using a specific ion electrode, BFC was significantly high in each specimen (mean +/- SD; 0.79 +/- 0.36% on bone ash). The radiologically evident osteosclerosis observed i…

The neoplastic proliferation of tissue mast cells constitutes a group of rare diseases that have localized and systemic variants. The cytolo … dditional cases peritrabecular and perivascular sheets of mast cells, with concomitant fibrosis and osteosclerosis, were also present. Unlike the findings in type 1, however, the noninfiltrated marrow areas showed marked reductions in fat cell content and markedly increased granulocytopoiesis or increased numbers of blast cells (infiltration pattern type 2). Diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible is now considered a local manifestation of SAPHO syndrome. This rare condition is thought to be of auto-inflammatory origin. The myriad of treatments shown in the literature, are basically empirical and reflect its unknown origin. We present a clinical case of refractory DSO treated with an anti-TNF drug (etanercept) with complete clinical remission. We advise against radical surgery and an interdisciplinary approach is recommended. A systematic literature review was also conducted.

Raine syndrome is caused by mutations in FAM20C, which had been reported to encode a secreted component of bone and teeth. We found that FAM20C encodes a Golgi-localized protein kinase, distantly related to the Golgi-localized kinase Four-jointed. Drosophila also encode a Golgi-localized protein kinase closely related to FAM20C. We show that FAM20C can phosphorylate secreted phosphoproteins, including both Casein and members of the SIBLING protein family, which modulate biomineralization, and we find that FAM20C phosphorylates a biologically active peptide at amino acids essential for inhibiti

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between abnormal bone marrow of the mandibular condyle and osteoarthritis.
STUDY DESIGN: The relationship between abnormal bone marrow and osteoarthritis of the mandibular condyle was analyzed in magnetic resonance images of the temporomandibular joints of 74 patients. Thirty-seven patients had magnetic resonance evidence of abnormal bone marrow, and 37 control patients had magnetic resonance images with normal bone marrow.
RESULTS: Fifteen of 37 patients with magnetic resonance evidence of abnormal bone marrow had no magne
