Histological assessment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has anchored knowledge development about the phenotypes of the condition, their natural history and their clinical course. This fact has led to the use of histological assessment as a reference standard for the evaluation of efficacy of drug interventions for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) - the more histologically active form of NAFLD. However, certain limitations of conventional histological assessment systems pose challenges in drug development. These limitations have spurred intense scientific and commercial developme

Acute radiotherapy (RT)-induced external ear soft tissue changes start with erythema and dry desquamation and may progress to moist desquamation and epidermal ulceration. Chronic RT-induced changes include epithelial atrophy and subcutaneous fibrosis. Although RT-induced radiation dermatitis has been well studied, interventions for soft tissue disease involving the external auditory canal (EAC) warrant investigation. Medical management includes topical steroid treatment for EAC radiation dermatitis and topical antibiotic therapy for suppurative otitis externa. Hyperbaric oxygen and pentoxifyll

The vestibulocochlear nerve is the eighth cranial nerve, entering the brainstem in the medullopontine sulcus after crossing the internal auditory canal and cerebellopontine angle cistern. It is a purely sensitive nerve, originating from the Scarpa's and spiral ganglions, responsible for balance and hearing. It has 6 nuclei located in the lower pons. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful for evaluating the vestibulocochlear nerve, although computed tomography may have a complementary role in assessing bone lesions. A heavily T2-weighted sequence, such as fast imaging employing steady-state

The pathology of severe COVID-19 lung injury is predominantly diffuse alveolar damage, with other reported patterns including acute fibrinous organizing pneumonia, organizing pneumonia, and bronchiolitis. Lung injury was caused by primary viral injury, exaggerated immune responses, and superinfection with bacteria and fungi. Although fatality rates have decreased from the early phases of the pandemic, persistent pulmonary dysfunction occurs and its pathogenesis remains to be fully elucidated.

Pneumoconioses represent the spectrum of lung diseases caused by inhalation of respirable particulate matter small enough (typically <5-µm diameter) to reach the terminal airways and alveoli. Pneumoconioses primarily occur in occupational settings where workers perform demanding and skilled manual labor including mining, construction, stone fabrication, farming, plumbing, electronics manufacturing, shipyards, and more. Most pneumoconioses develop after decades of exposure, though shorter latencies can occur from more intense particulate matter exposures. In this review, we summarize the indust

The clinic and pathological anatomy of the infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus (coronavirus infection - CI) with the development of Post-Covid syndrome (PS) have not been studied enough. This also applies to morphofunctional changes in the lungs, one of the most important components of PS. We conducted a histological and bacterioscopic study of lung biopsy specimens in 20 patients of both sexes aged 22-75 years. In many patients, PS developed relatively late - not earlier than 1 year - 1 year 4 months after the onset of acute clinical symptoms of CI. Structural changes in the lungs in PS

AIMS: Tumours of the cutaneous adnexa arise from, or differentiate towards, structures in normal skin such as hair follicles, sweat ducts/glands, sebaceous glands or a combination of these elements. This class of neoplasms includes benign tumours and highly aggressive carcinomas. Adnexal tumours often present as solitary sporadic lesions, but can herald the presence of an inherited tumour syndrome such as Muir-Torre syndrome, Cowden syndrome or CYLD cutaneous syndrome. In contrast to squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, molecular changes in adnexal neoplasia have been poorly chara

The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve and is a sensory-motor nerve that provides the innervation to the face with its three roots. The trigeminal nerve can be affected by several diseases, such as vascular conflict, congenital malformation, inflammatory or neoplastic diseases. Magnetic Resonance Imaging plays a crucial role in its evaluation. This article aims to review the trigeminal nerve anatomy, discuss the best magnetic resonance imaging techniques to evaluate each nerve segment, and demonstrate the imaging aspect of the diseases that most commonly affect it.

Hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disorder characterized by elevated levels of parathyroid hormone and hypercalcemia and is divided into 3 types: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Distinction between these types is accomplished by correlation of clinical, radiologic, and laboratory findings with pathologic features. Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs sporadically in 85% of cases with the remaining cases associated with multiple familial syndromes. The pathologic manifestations of primary hyperparathyroidism include parathyroid adenoma, parathyroid hyperplasia, and parathyroid carcinoma

Resuscitated apparent stillbirth (RAS) is defined as an infant with APGAR scores of 0 at 1 minute of life who receives successful resuscitation. Assessment of placental pathology is considered standard of care in such infants, but the clinical significance of these placental findings as they relate to clinical outcomes has yet to be described within the literature. We report the findings of a retrospective study of placental pathology as defined by the Amsterdam and Dublin criteria of RAS infants born in South Australia over an 8-year period. The aim of this study was to assess whether placent…

Abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes are associated with multiple factors including prematurity, intrauterine infection, maternal comorbidities as well as fetal anomalies. Within the past decade, new standardized terminology in placental pathology has emerged, emphasizing the current understanding of processes that play a role in placental dysfunction. Factors playing a major role in the abnormal development of the placenta include abnormalities in blood flow and perfusion of the fetal and maternal compartments of the placenta termed fetal vascular malperfusion and maternal vascular malperfusi…

High resolution ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) neurography are both imaging modalities that are commonly used for assessing per … the multiple variations given the standard distal course. US and MRI are also useful in determining pathology of the SN given the specific image findings that are seen with peripheral nerves. In this review, we evaluate the normal imaging anatomy of the SN and discuss common pathologies identified on imaging.

A 23-year-old man presented with fever and cervical swelling. Contrast-enhanced CT-scan with oblique sagittal planes reconstructions with extensive collection with gaseous areas, involving multiple cervical and mediastinal spaces is shown, reflecting a cervical-mediastinal necrotizing fasciitis. Note the circumference to the laryngotracheal axis. He underwent combined surgery by ENT and thoracic surgery and was discharged without sequelae after long hospitalization. This case demonstrates the importance of working in a multidisci- plinary team to treat complex pathologies.

The spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders with an autosomal dominant inheritance. Symptoms include poor coordination and balance, peripheral neuropathy, impaired vision, incontinence, respiratory insufficiency, dysphagia, and dysarthria. Although many patients with SCA have respiratory-related complications, the exact mechanism and extent of this pathology remain unclear. This review aims to provide an update on the recent clinical and preclinical scientific findings on neuropathology causing respiratory insufficiency in SCA.

We describe the pathology of gastrointestinal tuberculosis in three cows. Gross lesions were found in the jejunum and ileum in all cases, and were characterized by button-shaped ulcers in the mucosa overlying Peyer's patches and adjacent mucosa. One case had similar changes in the pyloric region of the abomasum. In the affected intestinal segments, marked granulomatous inflammation effaced the lymphoid follicles of Peyer's patches and often extended transmurally. Transmural granulomatous inflammation was also found in the abomasum of one cow. Acid-fast bacilli were identified by the Ziehl-Neel…

Lymphoid malignancies are a broad and heterogeneous group of neoplasms. In the past decade, the genetic landscape of these tumors has been explored and cataloged in fine detail offering a glimpse into the mechanisms of lymphomagenesis and new opportunities to translate these findings into patient management. A myriad of studies have demonstrated both distinctive and overlapping molecular and chromosomal abnormalities that have influenced the diagnosis and classification of lymphoma, disease prognosis, and treatment selection.
