Simultaneous VEP and PERG investigations in early Parkinson's disease.

To evaluate whether visual evoked potential (VEP) and pattern electroretinogram (PERG) abnormalities may be detectable early in the course of Parkinson's disease (PD) and to assess a possible interdependence between retinal and cortical potentials, simultaneous VEP and PERG were carried out in nine patients with early PD. The mean (SD) duration of the disease was 10 (6) months. None of the patients had been previously treated with levodopa or other anti-parkinsonian drugs. The results show VEP and PERG abnormalities that are spatial stimulus dependent, with higher frequencies being more involv

Beyond words: The impact of static and animated faces as visual cues on memory performance and listening effort during two-talker conversations.

Listening to a conversation between two talkers and recalling the information is a common goal in verbal communication. However, cognitive-psychological experiments on short-term memory performance often rely on rather simple stimulus material, such as unrelated word lists or isolated sentences. The present study uniquely incorporated running speech, such as listening to a two-talker conversation, to investigate whether talker-related visual cues enhance short-term memory performance and reduce listening effort in non-noisy listening settings. In two equivalent dual-task experiments, participa

Sex differences in development of functional connections in the face processing network.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Understanding sex differences in typical development of the face processing network is important for elucidating disruptions during atypical development in sex-linked developmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder. Based on prior sex difference studies in other cognitive domains, this study examined whether females show increased integration of core and extended face regions with age for face viewing, while males would show increased segregation. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design with typically developing children and adults (n = 133) and a funct

The neural coding of face and body orientation in occipitotemporal cortex.

Face and body orientation convey important information for us to understand other people's actions, intentions and social interactions. It has been shown that several occipitotemporal areas respond differently to faces or bodies of different orientations. However, whether face and body orientation are processed by partially overlapping or completely separate brain networks remains unclear, as the neural coding of face and body orientation is often investigated separately. Here, we recorded participants' brain activity using fMRI while they viewed faces and bodies shown from three different ori

Right fusiform response patterns reflect visual object identity rather than semantic similarity.

We previously reported the neuropsychological consequences of a lesion confined to the middle and posterior part of the right fusiform gyrus (case JA) causing a partial loss of knowledge of visual attributes of concrete entities in the absence of category-selectivity (animate versus inanimate). We interpreted this in the context of a two-step model that distinguishes structural description knowledge from associative-semantic processing and implicated the lesioned area in the former process. To test this hypothesis in the intact brain, multi-voxel pattern analysis was used in a series of event-

Recognition memory, self-other source memory, and theory-of-mind in children with autism spectrum disorder.

This study investigated semantic and episodic memory in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using a task which assessed recognition and self-other source memory. Children with ASD showed undiminished recognition memory but significantly diminished source memory, relative to age- and verbal ability-matched comparison children. Both children with and without ASD showed an "enactment effect", demonstrating significantly better recognition and source memory for self-performed actions than other-person-performed actions. Within the comparison group, theory-of-mind (ToM) task performance was significant

The Role of Eye Movement Consistency in Aging-Related Decline in Face Recognition.

Face recognition involves a prolonged developmental process where individuals gradually develop a more consistent yet idiosyncratic visual routine with increasing age. In contrast to this early developmental trend, among 301 middle and older participants, we observed that age was associated with lower eye movement consistency, suggesting an inverted-U shape across the lifespan, and consistency could partially account for the association between age and declined face recognition performance. Also, a less eyes-focused eye movement pattern predicted poorer recognition performance together with lo

Visual agnosia and prosopagnosia in childhood: a prospective case study.

Selective impairments in visual processing are well documented in adults but rarely reported in children. The few childhood cases reported are mostly retrospective accounts with little attention paid to developmental, assessment or management issues. We report a prospective case study of a boy with prosopagnosia and visual processing deficits of presumed developmental origin. At the age of 4 years, AL presented with a range of cognitive and visual recognition deficits. Subsequent assessments revealed an evolving pattern in visual recognition and dissociations between developing skills. At the

Neural generators of sustained activity differ for stimulus-encoding and delay maintenance.

The ability to maintain information online beyond sensory stimulation is regarded as a key contribution of working memory to goal-directed behaviour. It is widely accepted that sustained neural activity is a key mechanism of stimulus maintenance, but it is unclear to what extent the neural generators of sustained activity change from stimulus-encoding to maintenance. Using event-related potentials in humans, we show that, in a delayed match-to-sample task, slow shifts over parieto-occipital electrode sites had a different topography and polarity during encoding and delay maintenance of images

Two visual systems in clinical neurology: readaptive role of the primitive system in visual agnosic patients.

In six patients with visual agnosia syndromes there was a striking dissociation between a preserved possibility of recognition of letters or objects in movement versus the recognition by simple visual static presentation. After a review of the literature it is concluded that at least two visual systems may be individualized in humans, i.e. a more recent one (the geniculo-calcarine) and an older one (the tectal-pulvinar-occipito-temporal system). Both from a physiological and clinical point of view, the most primitive system has two parts, i.e. a tectal and a telencephalic part. In visual agnos

Whose hand is this? Differential responses of right and left extrastriate body areas to visual images of self and others' hands.

The extrastriate body area (EBA) is involved in perception of human bodies and nonfacial body parts, but its role in representing body identity is not clear. Here, we used on-line high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to test the role of EBA in self-other distinction. In Experiments 1 and 2 we compared rTMS of right EBA with stimulation of left ventral premotor cortex (vPM), whereas in Experiment 3 we compared stimulation of right and left EBA. RTMS was applied during a hand laterality task in which self or others' hand images were presented in first- versus third-

Neural correlates of spatial frequency processing: A neuropsychological approach.

We examined the neural correlates of spatial frequency (SF) processing through a gender and neuropsychological approach, using a recognition task of filtered (either in low spatial frequencies/LSF or high spatial frequencies/HSF) natural scene images. Experiment 1 provides evidence for hemispheric specialization in SF processing in men (the right hemisphere is predominantly involved in LSF analysis and the left in HSF analysis) but not in women. Experiment 2 aims to investigate the role of the right occipito-temporal cortex in LSF processing with a neurological female patient who had a focal l

Prior Emotional Context Modulates Early Event-Related Potentials to Neutral Retrieval Cues.

Memory retrieval is thought to involve the reactivation of encoding processes. Previous fMRI work has indicated that reactivation processes are modulated by the residual effects of the prior emotional encoding context; different spatial patterns emerge during retrieval of memories previously associated with negative compared with positive or neutral context. Other research suggests that event-related potential (ERP) indicators of memory retrieval processes, like the left parietal old/new effect, can also be modulated by emotional context, but the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of t

Neurophysiology of threat processing bias in combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition that may develop after experiencing a traumatic event. Combat exposure increases an individual's chance of developing PTSD, making veterans especially susceptible to the disorder. PTSD is characterized by dysregulated emotional networks, memory deficits, and a hyperattentive response to perceived threatening stimuli. Recently, there have been a number of imaging studies that show structural and functional abnormalities associated with PTSD; however, there have been few studies utilizing electroencephalography (EEG). The goal of

Emotional arousal amplifies competitions across goal-relevant representation: A neurocomputational framework.

Emotional arousal often facilitates memory for some aspects of an event while impairing memory for other aspects of the same event. Across three experiments, we found that emotional arousal amplifies competition among goal-relevant representations, such that arousal impairs memory for multiple goal-relevant representations while enhancing memory for solo goal-relevant information. We also present a computational model to explain the mechanisms by which emotional arousal can modulate memory in opposite ways via the local/synaptic-level noradrenergic system. The model is based on neurophysiologi

Integrated speech and phonological awareness intervention for pre-school children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome experience difficulty with both spoken and written language acquisition, however controlled intervention studies to improve these difficulties are rare and have typically focused on improving one language domain. AIMS: To investigate the effectiveness of an integrated intervention approach on the speech, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness development of ten pre-school children with Down syndrome aged between 4;4 and 5;5. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A multiple single-subject design was used to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Baseline and intervent

Multi-voxel pattern analysis of selective representation of visual working memory in ventral temporal and occipital regions.

While previous results from univariate analysis showed that the activity level of the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) but not the fusiform gyrus (FG) reflects selective maintenance of the cued picture category, present results from multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) showed that the spatial response patterns of both regions can be used to differentiate the selected picture category in working memory. The ventral temporal and occipital areas including the PHG and FG have been shown to be specialized in perceiving and processing different kinds of visual information, though their role in the represe

Task-Related Dynamic Division of Labor Between Anterior Temporal and Lateral Occipital Cortices in Representing Object Size.

UNLABELLED: Object size is represented by functionally distinct sectors along the ventral visual pathway. The early visual cortex encodes objects' sensory-retinal size. Subsequently, the occipitotemporal cortex computes objects' canonical size based on statistical regularities of visual features. Although the neurocomputation of size has been studied in a "bottom-up" sensory-driven framework, little is known about how perceptual size information is transformed into conceptual knowledge and how this computation is modulated by "top-down" goal-driven signals. Using continuous theta burst stimula

Visual processing of words in a patient with visual form agnosia: a behavioural and fMRI study.

Patient D.F. has a profound and enduring visual form agnosia due to a carbon monoxide poisoning episode suffered in 1988. Her inability to distinguish simple geometric shapes or single alphanumeric characters can be attributed to a bilateral loss of cortical area LO, a loss that has been well established through structural and functional fMRI. Yet despite this severe perceptual deficit, D.F. is able to "guess" remarkably well the identity of whole words. This paradoxical finding, which we were able to replicate more than 20 years following her initial testing, raises the question as to whether

Visual and language processing deficits in compensated and uncompensated college students with dyslexia.

In seven experiments, we investigated whether compensated and uncompensated adults with dyslexia show different patterns of deficits in magnocellular visual processing and in language processing tasks. In four visual tasks, we failed to find evidence of magnocellular deficits in either group. However, both groups of adults with dyslexia showed deficits in component language skills, and the degree of reading impairment predicted the nature and extent of these deficits. Uncompensated readers showed deficits in orthographic and especially phonological coding and awareness and were slower on rapid
