Using peer advocates to improve access to services among hard-to-reach populations with hepatitis C: a qualitative study of client and provider relationships.

BACKGROUND: Peer support programmes use individuals with specific experiences to improve engagement and outcomes among new clients. However, the skills and techniques used to achieve this engagement have not been mapped. This potentially restricts the development and replication of successful peer advocate models of care. This study explored how a group of peer advocates with experience of homelessness, alcohol and drug misuse made and sustained relationships with their client group. For the purposes of this project, the client group were located among a hepatitis C-positive cohort of people w

A randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of social networking on chronic disease management in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Social networking has been shown to improve health outcomes in certain patient populations. While patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) increasingly use social networking to communicate with peers, the effects of these interactions are largely unknown. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, we compared RA patients who participated in a social networking group moderated by peer leaders and who had access to a static website offering RA materials with a control group, who only had access to the website. The primary outcomes were patients' RA knowledge, self-efficacy and empower

Perceptions about substance use among male adolescents in juvenile detention.

Although adolescents in juvenile detention represent a vulnerable population who are exposed to situations that foster risk-taking behaviors, few studies have been conducted with detained adolescents to determine their perceptions regarding substance use. Ethnographic interviews and observations were conducted with 20 male adolescents who resided in a large metropolitan area juvenile detention facility, to discover their substance use beliefs and the decisions they make to continue or discontinue substance use or abuse. The participants described how they initiated substance use and said that

Latent profiles of male peers returning HIV self-test results after secondary distribution by men who have sex with men in Zhuhai, China.

BACKGROUND: Secondary distribution of HIV self-testing (HIVST) can extend testing through social and sexual networks of men who have sex with men, but the peer subgroups reached by this approach remain insufficiently understood. We aimed to identify latent profiles of peers who returned HIVST results, and assess index-peer factors associated with peer class membership. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of pooled HIVST secondary distribution studies and program phases among men who have sex with men in Zhuhai, China, from October 2019 to December 2023. Peers received HIVST kits from i

"We're all hammered in Chile": Drinking norms and tactics from adolescents' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Understanding adolescents' perspectives on how alcohol policies and the normalization of alcohol consumption affect their behavior remains crucial. This study explores how microsocial systems (peers and family) shape adolescent alcohol consumption within the macrosocial systems (social norms and public policies) in which they are embedded. METHODS: We conducted 25 group interviews with 197 students in Years 8 to 10 (55.3% girls) enrolled in nine schools. Interviews were analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. RESULTS: Despite recent restrictions on alcohol sales to adolescent

Peer-assisted telemedicine for hepatitis C intervention in people experiencing housing instability.

BACKGROUND: The rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment initiation and cure is suboptimal among people experiencing homelessness. A recent randomized controlled trial conducted by our study team compared peer-assisted telemedicine for HCV (TeleHCV) to peer-assisted referral to local providers (enhanced usual care [EUC]) in a rural population in Oregon. We hypothesized that the TeleHCV treatment model is more effective than EUC among those with unstable housing. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of the Oregon TeleHCV randomized controlled trial in adults with HCV and injection drug use (n

Who plays a more crucial role in adolescent well-being: Interactions with parents or peers? An investigation of adolescents aged 10 to 18 years.

Adolescence is a critical period during which interactions with parents and peers play key roles in shaping mental well-being, yet there is ongoing debate regarding their relative importance. To address this gap, this research examines the relationships among communication with parents, social interactions with peers, and adolescents' mental well-being using data from 33,824 Chinese adolescents (ages 10-18 years, Mage = 13.55, 47.43% female) across three data collection waves. A random intercepts cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) was combined with local structural equation modeling (LSEM) to

Individual, community, and societal drivers of adolescent peer violence in Asella, Ethiopia: A school-based cross-sectional study utilizing the socio-ecological model.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent peer violence is a critical public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries. However, existing research in sub-Saharan Africa often focuses disproportionately on intimate partner violence or male-centered aggression, leaving a significant data gap regarding broader peer-to-peer dynamics in rapidly urbanizing Ethiopian settings. Furthermore, there is an urgent need for evidence that integrates psychosocial traits with environmental influences. This study addresses these gaps by utilizing the Socio-Ecological Model (SEM)-a framework that examines the interplay

24-hour movement behaviors of physical activity, screen time, and sleep in youth with down syndrome compared to typically developing peers.

BACKGROUND: Youth with Down syndrome (DS) tend to have a higher prevalence of obesity compared to their peers with typical development (TD). Physical activity, sleep and screen time are modifiable behaviors which can influence childhood obesity. To better understand an individual's activity, these behaviors should be examined concurrently versus independently over a 24-h period. OBJECTIVE: To pilot the examination and comparison of physical activity, sleep, and screen and non-screen sedentary behaviors concurrently in a 24-h period, and determine if 24-h guidelines were met in a sample of you
