This study attempted to assess the performance of several screening instruments for adjustment disorders (ADs) and major depression (MD) among terminally ill Japanese cancer patients. Two hundred and nine consecutive patients were assessed for ADs and MD using a structured clinical interview at the time of their registration with a palliative care unit, and two single-item interviews ("Are you depressed?" and "Have you lost interest?") and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were administered. Screening performance was investigated by calculating sensitivity, specificity, the posi

Parents of critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) commonly experience new or worsening anxiety, which can lead to long-term sequelae in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To investigate how well the PICU providers recognize and assess parental anxiety, we assessed the acute and baseline anxiety level of 30 parents in the PICU with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and compared the results with the PICU physician's and nurses' assessments. All but four parents experienced higher acute anxiety scores compared to baseline, with a 34% increase in

The impacts of potentially treatable psychological parameters on quality of life are relatively unreported in adults with Facioscapulohumeral, Becker and Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy. The purpose of this study was to compare quality of life, psychological parameters, and physical function between adults with muscular dystrophy and controls, and to examine relationships among these parameters in muscular dystrophy. Twenty-one adults with muscular dystrophy (n = 7 Becker, n = 8 Facioscapulohumeral, n = 6 Limb-girdle) and ten age-matched controls participated. Outcome measures were health-relat

Studies of rumination have supported the differentiation of self-focus into distinct modes of self-attention with distinct functional effects. Given that self-focused attention and rumination have been implicated in the maintenance of social anxiety, the present study investigated the effects of these two distinct forms of self-focused attention on mood and cognition in social anxiety. High and low socially anxious individuals (n=29 in each group) either thought analytically about, or focused on their momentary experience of, identical symptom-focused induction items from [Nolen-Hoeksema, S.,

A conceptualization of claustrophobia [Rachman, S., & Taylor, S. (1993). Analyses of claustrophobia. Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 7, 281-291] was evaluated in the context of magnetic resonance imaging. One hundred eleven students responded to questionnaires that quantified fear of suffocation, fear of restriction, and sensitivity to anxiety symptoms. Sixty-four of them were then exposed to a mock magnetic resonance imaging assessment; maximum subjective fear during the mock assessment was self-reported, behavioral reactions to the mock assessment were characterized, and heart rates before and

The mechanisms underlying benzodiazepine antagonism of opioid antinociception were studied using the tail flick test and the hot plate test in mice. Both single-dose and repeated diazepam treatment antagonized the antinociceptive effect of morphine. The specific benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil completely reversed the antagonism between diazepam and morphine. Mid-thoracic spinalization also abolished the antagonism, indicating that the antagonism takes place at higher levels in the CNS. Neither diazepam nor midazolam showed any affinity for opioid mu or kappa receptors in membranes prepare

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the encephalotropic and psychotropic properties of Ro 23-0364, a novel imidazobenzodiazepine with mixed benzodiazepine agonist/antagonist properties, were investigated as compared with the pure agonist diazepam utilizing quantitative EEG and psychometric analyses as well as clinical observations. Ten normal volunteers received randomized (latin square) and at weekly intervals single oral doses of placebo, 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1.0 mg Ro 23-0364 and 10 mg diazepam as reference drug. EEG-recordings and evaluation of pulse, blood pressure and side effect

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in clinical practice. Their high comorbidity and the inherent subjectivity of self-report screening tools have motivated efforts to identify objective, physiology-based digital phenotypes.
OBJECTIVES: To rigorously evaluate the diagnostic performance of an artificial intelligence visual analysis platform based on head-neck micro-vibration signals for screening depression and anxiety, to compare its differences and complementarities with traditional self-report scales, and to develop and explore the potential

PURPOSE: Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) is a chronic maladaptive condition characterized by persistent performance decline due to excessive training and inadequate recovery. OTS is associated with mood disturbances, but the underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated whether a 6-week overtraining (OT) protocol induces anxiety-like behavior and changes in hippocampal BBB-related tight junction proteins in mice.
METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were assigned to sedentary (SED, n = 5), moderate exercise (ME, n = 5), or overtraining (OT; downhill treadmill

To test whether brief bedside photoplethysmography-derived heart-rate variability (PPG-HRV) provides objective information about pain, sleep, and affect in adults with chronic pain, and whether sleep moderates the pain-emotion association. We conducted a cross-sectional study of consecutive inpatients with chronic pain (duration ≥ 3 months) admitted to an orthopedics/traumatology service from March 31 to September 28, 2025. Adults (≥ 18 years; right-handed) were excluded for severe internal disease or acute trauma, major psychiatric disorders, marked cognitive impairment, or recent use of anxi

Background: Mental health issues among medical students have gained increasing attention globally, with studies indicating a high prevalence of psychological disorders within this population. The use of antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications has become a common response to these mental health challenges. However, it is crucial to understand the extent of their usage and associated effects on students' mental health and academic performance. This cross-sectional study explored the use of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs and their impact on the mental health of medical students in Sa

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is underdiagnosed despite its high prevalence among patients with cardiovascular risk factors. Given the well-documented benefits of physical activity on physical and mental capacities, we aimed to assess the effects of a supervised exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program for PAD on walking performance, hemodynamic parameters, anxiety, depression, and quality of life.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective quasi-experimental before-after study at Yaoundé General Hospital from November 2024 to June 2025 among adult patients, with or w

Fear is an adaptive component of the acute "stress" response to potentially-dangerous (external and internal) stimuli which threaten to perturb homeostasis. However, when disproportional in intensity, chronic and/or irreversible, or not associated with any genuine risk, it may be symptomatic of a debilitating anxious state: for example, social phobia, panic attacks or generalized anxiety disorder. In view of the importance of guaranteeing an appropriate emotional response to aversive events, it is not surprising that a diversity of mechanisms are involved in the induction and inhibition of anx

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is believed to involve impaired processing of external information and excessive focus on internal bodily signals. However, comparative evidence on exteroceptive and interoceptive performance within a common experimental framework remains limited. In the present study, individuals with GAD (n = 31) and healthy controls (HC; n = 31) completed a heart rate discrimination (HRD) task, combined with Bayesian psychophysical modeling and signal detection theory-based metacognitive indices. At the first-order level, we estimated an HRD threshold parameter (α), indexi

OBJECTIVE: To establish the benefits of an early, tailored and low-cost exercise intervention in older patients hospitalised for acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
METHODS: The study was a multicentre, randomised assessment of an exercise intervention in patients with ACS ≥70 years with reduced physical performance (as defined by the short physical performance battery (SPPB), value 4-9). The exercise intervention included four supervised sessions (1, 2, 3, 4 months after discharge) and home-based exercises. The control group attended a health education programme only. The outcomes were the 6-mont

Melatonin, an indoleamine hormone secreted into circulation at night primarily by the brain's pineal gland, has been shown to have a wide variety of actions on the development and physiology of neurons in the CNS. Acting via two G-protein-coupled membrane receptors (MT1 and MT2), melatonin modulates neurogenesis, synaptic functions, neuronal cytoskeleton and gene expression. In the present studies, we sought to characterize the behavior and neuronal biology of transgenic mice lacking both of these melatonin receptors as a way to understand the hormone's receptor versus non-receptor-mediated ac

Working memory is a vital cognitive capacity without which meaningful thinking and logical reasoning would be impossible. Working memory is integrally dependent upon prefrontal cortex and it has been suggested that voluntary control of working memory, enabling sustained emotion inhibition, was the crucial step in the evolution of modern humans. Consistent with this, recent fMRI studies suggest that working memory performance depends upon the capacity of prefrontal cortex to suppress bottom-up amygdala signals during emotional arousal. However fMRI is not well-suited to definitively resolve que
