Prophylaxis for venous thromboembolic disease in pregnancy and the early postnatal period.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolic disease (TED), although rare, is a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity, hence methods of prophylaxis are often used for women at risk. This may include women delivered by caesarean section, those with a personal or family history of TED and women with inherited or acquired thrombophilias (conditions that predispose people to thrombosis). Many methods of prophylaxis carry a risk of side effects, and as the risk of TED is low, it is possible that the benefits of thromboprophylaxis may be outweighed by harm. Current guidelines for clinical practice ar

Mythical 'Tails of Lockwood'.

The cause of testicular ectopia has long been a mystery, and over the years, many hypotheses have been suggested to explain the condition. The most famous of these hypotheses is that of the 'Tails of Lockwood'. This developed from a paper written in 1888 by Charles Barrett Lockwood. Although little evidence has ever been found to corroborate this hypothesis, it remains in many textbooks and journal articles to the present day. In the 21st century, this theory should no longer be given as the cause for ectopic testes. Current biological evidence supports a complex process of growth, by elongati

Survey of advertising for nutritional supplements in health and bodybuilding magazines.

The use of food supplements by the general public is poorly quantified, and little information on this subject is available in the medical literature. We surveyed 12 recent issues of popular health and bodybuilding magazines (1) to quantify the number of advertisements for food supplements, the number of products advertised, and the number and type of ingredients in these products; (2) to identify the purported health benefits of these products; and (3) as a preliminary effort to identify areas for future research. We counted 89 brands, 311 products, and 235 unique ingredients, the most freque

Metergoline in the inhibition of puerperal lactation.

Seventy-eight mothers who did not want to breast-feed their newborn infants took part in a trial to assess whether metergoline could effectively suppress puerperal lactation. Metergoline 8 mg/day was given to 69 women within 24 hours after delivery and continued for five days to prevent lactation. The remaining nine women were given a course of metergoline once lactation had started. The drug was effective in both preventing and suppressing lactation. Milk secretion, engorgement, and pain were significantly reduced in women taking metergoline. Metergoline has a similar effect to bromocriptine

Early regression of paraurethral cyst in a neonate.

Paraurethral cyst is a rare cause of interlabial mass formation in female neonates. Paraurethral cysts are generally asymptomatic, and spontaneous regression is expected. However, the management of paraurethral cysts is a controversial topic. Here, we report the case of a female neonate with a paraurethral cyst that regressed spontaneously on day 3 after birth. Urgent surgical treatment of these cysts is not recommended during the early neonatal period.

Efficacy of allogeneic cord blood platelet gel on wounds of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa patients after pseudosyndactyly surgery.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the formation of blisters and wounds in skin and mucous membranes; it is classified into four types and has various methods of treatment. Management of previous wounds and prevention of formation of new lesions are the most important strategies in the course of therapy to improve patient's quality of life; lack of wound management can lead to further complications such as infection. The current study investigated the therapeutic effects of allogeneic platelet gel (prepared from umbilical cord blood) in a group of children d

[Children environmental health--Polish epidemiological publications in the global literature on the topic].

Environmental hazards in children are subject to many research programs and public health priority, also in Poland. Assessment of the publication output in this field can be used to evaluate the level of general scientific activity in epidemiology. "Medline"-based review (topic: environmental exposure) showed that in the examined period the percentage of Polish publications concerning children aged 0-18 years reached 1,67%, and a half of the articles was published in English. Following the period of a visible increase in annual numbers of Polish publications two recent years revealed a marked

The use of a novel intense pulsed light and heat source and ALA-PDT in the treatment of moderate to severe inflammatory acne vulgaris.

The use of lasers and noncoherent light sources is becoming more commonplace in the treatment of inflammatory acne vulgaris. Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is finding its niche as an enhancer to these laser and light sources. Twenty patients with moderate to severe inflammatory acne vulgaris were enrolled in a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of ALA-PDT with activation by a SkinStation LHE (Radiancy, Inc., Orangeburg, NY), a novel intense pulsed light (IPL) and heat source that emits 430-nm to 1100-nm radiation at 3 to 9 J/cm2 fluences. Patients were given topical ALA (Levulan Kera

Prophylactic antibiotics in trauma.

Clinical and laboratory experience has shown that prophylactic antibiotics may be effective in trauma when the period of contamination is brief, defined and predictable. Prevention of infections has been achieved in the treatment of penetrating abdominal wounds, open fractures, and early wounds that can be adequately debrided and closed. Prophylactic antibiotics do not prevent infection in wounds left open, in wounds that are incompletely debrided or treated very late, following tracheal intubation, after urinary tract catheterization, or after vascular cannulation. Continuing contamination is

Reduction of intraocular pressure in normal and glaucomatous primate (Aotus trivirgatus) eyes by topically applied prostaglandin F2 alpha.

Topical application of a single dose of 1.0 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) onto the cornea of five trained owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) caused a prolonged and highly significant ocular hypotony. The intraocular pressure (IOP) of the treated eye was 4.7 +/- 0.9 mm Hg below that of the control eye 18 to 24 hr after PGF2 alpha application and remained significantly reduced for over 72 hr. Miosis, aqueous flare, and accumulation of cells in the anterior chamber were minimal in extent. The hypotensive effect of PGF2 alpha was even more pronounced when applied to a glaucomatous owl monkey

Treatment Resistant Acneiform Eruption in a Young Female: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

A 27-year-old female with no significant medical or dermatologic history presented with a persistent acneiform eruption on the face. The patient had been treated with multiple topical and systemic anti-acne treatments with no significant improvement over a period of two years. A punch biopsy was performed on the right cheek lesion showing dense lymphocytic infiltrates of the reticular dermis with peri- and intra-follicular distribution.

Difficulties in treating steroid withdrawal: intermittent ACTH and low dose systemic cyclosporin used to treat a senile erythroderma patient.

The tapering or termination of prolonged strong topical and/or systemic corticosteroid application for extensive generalized eczema has adverse effects on the body and thus presents a very difficult situation. The present case is that of a 68-year-old man with erythroderma following eczema, whose steroid withdrawal was successfully treated with intermittent ACTH and low dose systemic cyclosporin administration over a period of one year.

[Suppurative hidradenitis in Down's syndrome. Apropos of three cases].

We present three patients affected by the Down's Syndrome who suffered hidradenitis suppurativa in perianal region for a long period of time with poor response to topical and systemic treatments. We describe both processes and the immunological alterations described in both groups. We conclude that hidradenitis suppurative may be a cutaneous manifestation relate to Down's Syndrome, but further research is necessary to clarify this associations.

Scholarly publishing literacy and perceptions of predatory publishing among educational partners at a chiropractic college: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chiropractors must find, appraise, and apply high quality, peer-reviewed information sources to make evidence-based clinical practice decisions. This case report describes perceptions of scholarly publishing practices, with a focus on predatory and deceptive publishing, among chiropractic educational partners at one chiropractic college. CASE PRESENTATION: An anonymous, online, cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of 2,476 faculty, staff, and students.
