Abnormal FDG Uptake on PET/CT Due to Periosteal Reaction Caused by Hypervitaminosis D in a Pediatric Patient.

A 7-year-old boy presented with diffuse bone pain. FDG PET/CT was performed to find the possible underlying malignant cause of hypercalcemia. The images demonstrated multiple foci of abnormal FDG activity at the sites of periosteal reaction. In addition, calcium deposit was noted in the basal ganglia, stomach, and the colon. History taking revealed that the patient had routinely taken an over-the-counter "supplement" that contains a high dose of vitamin D. One week after calcitonin therapy and stopping the supplement, the patient became symptom free. This case suggests that hypervitaminosis D

Periosteal osteoblastoma of the distal fibula with atypical radiological features: a case report.

We reported the case of a 22 year-old boy who suffered a periosteal osteoblastoma of the distal fibula. The radiographic features of our case did not correlate with the majority of periosteal osteoblastomas of the long bones reported in the literature and were identical to a periosteal aneurysmal bone cyst. Periosteal osteoblastoma is a very rare tumor with a wide range of clinical and radiological features, showing in 15% of cases association with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst. Radiologist and orthopaedic surgeon should be aware of the atypical behavior of this rare entity in order to avoid

Periosteal chondroma of the cuboid with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst in a setting of secondary hyperparathyroidism.

UNLABELLED: We report the case of a 35-year-old woman with painful, nontender mass at the right lateral hindfoot. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated the suspect of a chondroid tumour in the cuboid. The tumour was resected en bloc and histology revealed the presence of a periosteal (juxtacortical) chondroma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst. Secondary hyperparathyroidism was detected in laboratory tests and put into context with the histopathologic findings. In conclusion, a rare case of periosteal chondroma of the cuboid with secondary aneurysmal bone cys

Treatment of Symptomatic Osteoma on Eyebrow Using Adjacent Supraorbital Neuroperiosteal Flap.

Osteomas grow slowly, blocking or compressing adjacent structures, and frequently causing aesthetic deformity. Although most patients remain asymptomatic, development of facial pain and headaches due to compression of adjacent sensory nerves is not uncommon. Depending on the location of osteoma, many techniques were introduced to remove it. If the osteoma was located close to important structures such as nerves and vessels, surgeons can be concerned about damaging them resulting in unfavorable symptoms to patients. Osteoma is a benign slow-growing osteogenic lesion, composed of well-differenti

Long-term outcomes of simplified gingivoperiosteoplasty performed at the time of hard palatal closure: A review of 55 alveolar clefts.

Few studies have examined the long-term outcomes of gingivoperiosteoplasty at the age of permanent canine eruption. The success rates of gingivoperiosteoplasty vary significantly depending on the surgeon because of the difficulty of the surgical technique. Therefore, the authors utilized a simplified gingivoperiosteoplasty technique by inserting one or two large, triangular-shaped mucoperiosteal flaps on the opposite side in a tongue-in-groove or interdigitation fashion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of this simplified gingivoperiosteoplasty technique at the

Increased density and periosteal expansion of the tibia in young adult men following short-term arduous training.

PURPOSE: Few human studies have reported early structural adaptations of bone to weight-bearing exercise, which provide a greater contribution to improved bone strength than increased density. This prospective study examined site- and regional-specific adaptations of the tibia during arduous training in a cohort of male military (infantry) recruits to better understand how bone responds in vivo to mechanical loading. METHODS: Tibial bone density and geometry were measured in 90 British Army male recruits (ages 21±3years, height: 1.78±0.06m, body mass: 73.9±9.8kg) in weeks 1 (Baseline) and 10

Small incision subperiosteal and trans-blepharoplasty forehead and browlift.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of non-endoscopic, small-incision subperiosteal forehead and browlift in patients undergoing associated upper eyelid blepharoplasty. This is a retrospective, non-comparative case series of 14 consecutive patients in 12 months. Eleven patients underwent bilateral and three unilateral surgery. Unilateral surgery was performed in patients with facial palsy and was augmented with cable suspension. The technique involves five small scalp incisions to create a single subperiosteal and deep temporal cavity. Superior arcus marginalis rele

Ultrasound in the diagnosis of craniosynostosis.

Diagnosis of craniosynostosis is based on clinical aspects but may be difficult in some cases where characteristic features are missing and radiographic imaging is necessary. In this context near-field high-frequency ultrasound has been used to evaluate the sonographic characteristics of synostotic sutures and its potential confirming the correct diagnosis. Sutures of 26 infants, aged 2-7 months, were investigated by ultrasound (Siemens Elegra, 7.5 MHz linear scanner). Sonographic features of synostotic sutures were correlated to CT imaging and compared to the sonographic and histopathological

Bone growth in length and width: the Yin and Yang of bone stability.

Bone growth in length is primarily achieved through the action of chondrocytes in the proliferative and hypertrophic zones of the growth plate. Longitudinal growth is controlled by systemic, local paracrine and local mechanical factors. With regard to the latter, a feedback mechanism must exist which ensures that bone growth proceeds in the direction of the predominant mechanical forces. How this works is unknown at present. Bone growth in length is detrimental to bone stability, but this effect is counteracted by concomitant bone growth in width. This occurs through periosteal apposition, whi

Periosteal bone formation stimulated by externally induced bending strains.

The rat tibia four-point bending model is a new mechanical loading model in which force is applied through external pads to the rat lower limb. The advantages of the model are controlled force application to a well-defined bone, noninvasive external loading, and the addition of loads to normal daily activity. A disadvantage of the model is that the pads create local pressure on the leg at the contact sites. This study examined the differences in tibial response to bending strains and to local pressure under the pads. A total of 30 adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into three external l

Growth of the maxilla after soft tissue palatal surgery at different ages in beagle dogs: a longitudinal radiographic study.

This study investigated maxillary growth after palatal surgery at different ages in beagle dogs. Soft tissue clefts were created in the median region of the palate at the age of 6 (group 1), 16 (group 2), and 25 weeks (group 3). Relaxation incisions were made, and the mucoperiosteum was elevated and closed in the midline, leaving two areas of denuded bone adjacent to the dentition. Metallic implants were placed in the palate, and dorso-ventral and lateral radiographs were made until the age of 37 weeks to study sutural growth and overall growth of the maxilla. In groups 1 and 2, growth in the …

Ontogenetic modelling of the petrous part of the temporal bone in man.

The inner and the outer layers of the petrous part of the temporal bone (p.p.t.b.) become definitive until the sixth intrauterine month. Therefore, the growth and modelling of the p.p.t.b. are subsequently achieved by apposition of the periosteal outer layer. Periosteal apposition takes place in the form of plates appearing successively. The author identified seven such plates concentrated around the canals passing through the p.p.t.b. and describes them in fetuses, premature infants and adults. Periosteal ossification may cause compression of nerves passing through the p.p.t.b. thus inducing

Experiences with infant and delayed periosteoplasty.

At the Cleft Palate Centre, Uppsala, Sweden, the periosteoplasty procedure had been used since 1964 to obtain bone continuity in the maxillary alveolar cleft area. This operation is performed either in infancy or as an early secondary (delayed) procedure. The amount of new bone formed in the alveolar cleft area was classified in 4 types according to Hellquist & Skoog 1976. The influence of the periosteoplasty on craniofacial growth and dental occlusion was studied longitudinally in different series of patients from the Uppsala region of Sweden, operated on with either infant or delayed periost

Recurrence Rates and Functional Outcomes Following Arthroscopic ALPSA Repair With Concomitant Remplissage: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior labroligamentous periosteal sleeve avulsion (ALPSA) lesions are often associated with higher failure rates after arthroscopic repair compared with non-ALPSA lesions. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare failure rates after arthroscopic ALPSA repair versus non-ALPSA (Bankart/Perthes) repair, with the effect of the Hill-Sachs lesions (HSLs) controlled by performing concomitant remplissage in all patients. It was hypothesized that addressing the Hill-Sachs defect would result in similar failure rates for both ALPSA and non-ALPSA repairs. STUDY DESIGN

Tibial periosteal distraction for ischemic leg ulcers: animal and clinical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic leg ulcers (ILU) represent a severe manifestation of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), characterized by high recurrence and amputation rates. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of tibial periosteal distraction (TPD) for treating ILU through a combination of animal experiments and clinical trials. METHODS: Nine Beagle dogs were randomly allocated into TPD group, tibial soft tissue distraction (TSD) group, and control group. Standardized 15-mm circular wounds were created on the foot, followed by periosteal distraction at a rate of 0.5 mm/day for 11 days.
