OBJECTIVE: This paper describes an audit of borderline symptoms, risk factors for maltreatment and types of abuse among parents who completed a parenting capacity assessment at a South Australian health-based child protection service.
METHOD: A retrospective case note audit within a 28-month period was conducted and included parents (n = 107) who had completed a Mclean's screening instrument for borderline personality disorder and/or had a psychiatric review with a formal diagnosis. Parents who had a borderline personality disorder diagnosis or endorsed five or more symptoms were categorised

The aim of this study was to provide data on the preliminary validation of a clinician-report multidimensional assessment measure of mentalization (Mentalization Imbalances Scale, MIS). A random national sample of psychotherapists (N=190) completed the MIS to identify mentalization imbalances, and the Personality Disorder Checklist to assess the personality disorders (PDs) of randomly selected patients currently in their care. Factor analysis confirmed the presence of six factors that represented different imbalances of mentalization: cognitive, affective, automatic, external, imbalance toward

BACKGROUND: We examine whether broad factors and specific facets of personality are associated with increased risk of incident Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a long-run longitudinal study and a meta-analysis of published studies.
METHODS: Participants (n = 1671) were monitored for up to 22 years from a baseline personality assessment. The meta-analysis pooled results from up to five prospective studies (n = 5054).
RESULTS: Individuals with scores in the top quartile of neuroticism (hazard ratio = 3.1; 95% confidence interval = 1.6-6.0) or the lowest quartile of conscientiousness (hazard ratio =…

Previous study suggests a role for post-synaptic alpha(2)-noradrenergic receptor sensitivity in irritability and/or aggression and impulsivity. In this study, we conducted intravenous challenges with the alpha(2)-noradrenergic agonist, clonidine, to assess the relationship between measures of impulsive aggression and post-synaptic alpha(2)-noradrenergic receptor sensitivity in human subjects. Subjects included 38 individuals with personality disorder and 28 healthy volunteer controls. Measures included the Irritability score and the Total Assault score from the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory

The current study sought to characterize and compare personality traits of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Ninety-seven adults with medically intractable epilepsy (TLE n=58, FLE n=39) completed the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) as part of routine preoperative investigations. Not surprisingly, both epilepsy groups endorsed significantly more symptoms across PAI clinical scales than the normative sample, most notably on scales assessing Depression and Somatic Complaints. Direct comparison of personality profiles of people with FLE and TLE reve…

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to identify psychological comorbidities that are associated with the propensity for prescription opioid abuse.
INTERVENTIONS: Patients presenting to an emergency department seeking opioid refills for chronic pain were evaluated with five validated self-report instruments and structured clinical interviews. The potential for prescription opioid abuse was modeled with multiple regression analysis using depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorder, and addiction as independent variables.
RESULTS: Of the 113 patients studied, 91 (81%) showed a propensity for prescr

OBJECTIVES: Measurements are often developed for the assessment of personality disorders (PDs) in younger adults and seldom evaluated on the applicability in older adults. Remarkably, research has not yet been conducted into age-group appropriateness of the gold standard for the assessment of PDs, known as Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders (SCID-II). Therefore, the current study empirically investigated the age-neutrality of the PDs assessed by the SCID-II.
METHODS: Age-neutrality was examined in 84 younger adults (aged 20-45 years) and 68 older adults (aged 65-85

Stability has been considered an important aspect of vulnerability to schizophrenia. The temporal stability of the scales in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was examined, using adoptees from the Finnish Adoptive Family Study of Schizophrenia. Adoptees who were high-risk (HR) offspring of biological mothers having a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (n=28) and low-risk (LR) controls (n=46) were evaluated using 15 MMPI scales at the initial assessment (HR, mean age 24 years; LR, mean age 23 years) and at the follow-up assessment after a mean interval of 11 years. Stability o

BACKGROUND: Depressive personality is commonly seen in clinical practice, and today only one exclusive self-report instrument-the Depressive Personality Disorder Inventory (DPDI)-is available for its assessment based on the DSM-IV description of the construct.
AIMS: The purpose of this research was to evaluate a Swedish version of this measure (DPDI-Swe) in terms of its reliability, internal structure, and convergent validity using related variables from the DSM-IV criteria for depressive personality disorder (DPD) and the proposed DPD trait set for DSM-5.
METHODS: A non-clinical sample of 2

Individual differences in self-other disagreement may tap phenomena that have been notoriously difficult to assess. For example, subjects who believe they possess a trait while their acquaintances disagree may be exhibiting suppression. Further, subjects who deny a trait while acquaintances believe it is present may be displaying repression. In the first study, both subjects and their closest friends rated the subject's hostility level. Suppressors and repressors were expected to exhibit enhanced thought control, and indeed these individuals were more able not to think about white bears when i

OBJECTIVE: A review of the literature reveals a consensus on the high prevalence of personality disorders among sexual offenders. Studies show that there is no unique personality profile for sex offenders. In France, little research has been conducted on this population with standardized assessment tools. The objective of the present study is to identify the distribution of personality disorders among sexual offenders using a new French questionnaire, i.e. the TD12. In view of the literature, we postulate that this tool will identify the diversity of personality disorders observed by various a

Poor insight has been reported in 15% to 36% of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but little is known about its clinical correlations. This study examines insight among patients with OCD using a standardized instrument, the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale, and analyzes its relationship with clinical factors. Insight was assessed in 132 patients with OCD, before and after pharmacologic treatment, using the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale. Differences between patients with good and poor insight on sociodemographic variables, OCD severity, comorbidity, and treatment response

BACKGROUND: Personality assessment involves the collection and organization of information into multidimensional taxonomies. However, no routinely used index directly quantifies the amount of information encoded in such taxonomies. Effective dimensionality (ED) is a Shannon entropy-based metric that uses eigenvalue distributions to quantify a system's spectral information as the effective number of non-redundant components. Although ED has been applied across fields ranging from physics to political science, it remains underutilized in psychological assessment.
METHODS: After establishing an …

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability in relationships, mood fluctuations, and erratic behavior. This study investigates the relationship between pathological personality traits and functional disability, the status of perceived social support in BPD, as well as its mediating role in this relationship. In this cross-sectional study, 192 Spanish women (BPD group, N = 97; healthy control group, N = 95) completed, through two online platforms, a battery of tests including: the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form (PID-5-BF), the World Health Organization Disa

BACKGROUND: Suicide in college students is a major public health concern. Suicidal ideation (SI) is associated with childhood trauma, personality, dysfunctional attitudes and depressive symptoms, but how they interact to predict SI remains unclear.
METHODS: Using cross-sectional design and convenience sampling method, a survey was conducted among 565 college students having major depressive disorder (MDD). The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale assessed participants' psychosocial factors. Chi-square te

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence has shown that maladaptive traits and emerging patterns of personality can be traced to an early stage of development and may be assessed in childhood. The goal of present study was to provide preliminary data on the validity of the Coolidge Personality and Neuropsychological Inventory for Children (CPNI), an instrument designed to assess personality pathologies and other clinical conditions in childhood.
METHOD: A sample of 146 clinicians completed the CPNI, as well as the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to evaluate the behavioral problems and social co

Resilience following traumatic events has been studied using numerous methodologies. One approach involves quantifying lower-than-expected levels of a negative outcome following trauma exposure. Resilience research has examined personality and coping-related factors. One malleable factor is psychological flexibility, or the context-dependent ability/willingness to contact the present moment, including emotional distress, in order to engage in valued actions. Among 254 war Veterans who participated in a longitudinal study, we operationalized resilience as lower-than-expected PTSD symptoms and P

Many investigations of the associations of self-presentation on Facebook with mental health and personality variables exist, but their findings have not yet been synthetized. We therefore carried out a narrative synthesis of 21 observational studies (combined N = 7,573) obtained from a systematic search of four academic databases. Significant self-presentation associations were yielded for self-esteem, perceived social support, social anxiety, well-being, depression, bipolar/mania, stress, self-consciousness, and insecure attachment. Significant associations were also yielded for all of the bi
