Measuring Light at Night and Melatonin Levels in Shift Workers: A Review of the Literature.

Shift work, especially that involving rotating and night shifts, is associated with an increased risk of diseases, including cancer. Attempts to explain the association between shift work and cancer in particular have focused on the processes of melatonin production and suppression. One hypothesis postulates that exposure to light at night (LAN) suppresses melatonin, whose production is known to slow the development of cancerous cells, while another proposes that circadian disruption associated with shift work, and not just LAN, increases health risks. This review focuses on six studies that e

Olfactory stimulation or inhibition of sexual behavior of stallions in non-breeding season.

Stallions show decreased sexual responses and activities during short days in winter. To evaluate the importance of sexual olfactory communication in horses, we tested whether sexual responses could be stimulated through various sexual olfactory stimulations in winter. To this end, we presented stallions with various olfactory stimulations (urine from mares at different stages of the reproductive cycle, urine from stallions or geldings, or chemically defined synthetic odorant) during the non-breeding season and measured their behavioral responses through (1) a test of olfactory investigation (

Seasonal timing: how does a hibernator know when to stop hibernating?

Deep hibernators that spend winter in a hypothermic coma below ground can still emerge and reproduce in spring at the right moment. A recent study shows that specific cells of the pituitary may harbor the internal calendar responsible for this.

Relationship of chronotype to sleep, light exposure, and work-related fatigue in student workers.

Students who work during the school year face the potential of sleep deprivation and its effects, since they have to juggle between school and work responsibilities along with social life. This may leave them with less time left for sleep than their nonworking counterparts. Chronotype is a factor that may exert an influence on the sleep of student workers. Also, light and social zeitgebers may have an impact on the sleep-related problems of this population. This study aimed to document sleep, light exposure patterns, social rhythms, and work-related fatigue of student workers aged 19-21 yrs an

Semen characteristics and artificial insemination in rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome).

This work was performed as part of a multi-year study to determine the cause of the low fertility in captive rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) and attempt to increase the fertility through artificial insemination (AI). Semen collection and characterization was performed on 14 male rockhopper penguins. The samples were evaluated for volume, sperm concentration, and sperm quality (motility, forward motility, viability, and morphology). There was a large variation between individuals and between collections for each individual. Mean volume of ejaculate was 0.24 ml. Mean concent

Pig melatonin receptor 1a (MTNR1A) genotype is associated with seasonal variation of sow litter size.

The duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion reaches its minimum in summer, a physiological event that is likely related with the diminishe … l variation observed for MTNR1A additive and dominant effects might be produced by the influence of photoperiod on the pattern and duration of melatonin secretion. These results illustrate that the complex interaction between genotype and environment can be an important source of phenotypic variation of reproductive traits.

Cry1 expression in the chicken pineal gland: effects of changes in the light/dark conditions.

Cryptochromes (Cry) are core components in the gene regulation of circadian rhythmic processes. It was shown earlier, that Cry1 mRNA content of the avian pineal gland was increased after a 4h exposure to light during subjective night; however, a 30min exposure was ineffective. In this study, changes in pineal Cry1 expression were detected in chickens during and after being placed into reversed light/dark environment. Cry1 mRNA content was higher if light was on during the night; however, in the first 2h of light exposure at night, Cry1 mRNA contents were decreased. Following the first overnigh

Chronopharmacology of morphine in mice.

Dosing-time-dependent changes in the effect and toxicity of morphine were examined in mice housed under alternating 12 h light (07:00 to 19:00 h) and dark (19:00 to 07:00 h) cycles. Morphine (0.5 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) in animals to assess its beneficial effect (i.e., protection against the kaolin-induced, bradykinin-mediated, writhing reaction) and its toxicity (i.e., alteration of the hepatic enzymes of aspartate aminotransferase [AST] alanine aminotransferase [ALT], and glutathione [GSH] in separate experiments). The magnitude of the analgesic effect of morphine depend

Circadian regulation of chick electroretinogram: effects of pinealectomy and exogenous melatonin.

Melatonin is an important component of the avian circadian system. This study investigates the effects of pinealectomy (Pin-X) and melatonin implantation (Mel) on electroretinogram (ERG) rhythms in chicks. Feeding rhythms were monitored to obtain a phase reference for ERG recordings. Pin-X and Mel had little or no effect on feeding rhythms. Sham-operated Pin-X and vehicle implantation had no effect on ERG rhythms in the light-dark (LD) cycle or constant darkness (DD). ERG a- and b-wave amplitudes were higher during the day than during the night. The a- and b-wave implicit times were shorter du

Effects of sleep deprivation and other stressors on the immune and inflammatory responses of influenza-infected mice.

Many stressors have well-documented effects on host immune competence. However, two important stressors that have not been extensively characterized in terms of their immune-modulatory properties are sleep deprivation and alterations in light:dark cycles. We therefore evaluated the effects of these stressors on the immune and inflammatory responses of mice inoculated intranasally with influenza virus. In contrast to a previous report, sleep deprivation did not significantly alter viral clearance or antibody titers of either virus-naive or immunized mice. Exposure to constant light also failed

The role of environment and management on leg abnormalities in meat-type fowl.

Continuous light with 1 h of darkness at midnight is a common photoperiod for raising meat-type fowl. The logic behind the 1 h of darkness, usually provided between midnight and 0100 h, is to acclimate the birds to darkness in the event of a power failure. Increasing evidence from several research laboratories indicates that lighting regimens other than continuous light, such as intermittent or step-up lighting, can lower the incidence of leg abnormalities in meat-type fowl. Some evidence suggests that increased exercise contributes in part to the reduction in lameness due to lighting. Managem…

Circadian photoreceptor CRYPTOCHROME promotes wakefulness under short winter-like days via a GABAergic circuitry.

A cardinal symptom of seasonal affective disorder (SAD, also known as winter depression) is hypersomnolence, while the cause of this 'winter sleepiness' is not known. Here, we found that lack of the circadian photoreceptor cryptochrome (cry) leads to increased sleep under short winter-like days in the fruit fly Drosophila, reminiscent of the hypersomnolence in SAD. CRY functions in neurons that synthesize the major inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, including the small ventral lateral neurons, which are known to be circadian pacemakers, and downregulates the GABAergic tone. This, in turn, leads

Middle-aged mice show delayed and destabilized food-anticipatory circadian activity under restricted feeding.

Mice are nocturnal and normally feed during the night; however, timed daily feeding can markedly alter behavioral and physiological rhythms. A well-known example is food-anticipatory activity (FAA), characterized by increased locomotor activity before feeding. In this study, we examined age-related effects on FAA under temporally restricted feeding (RF). Male C57BL/6 J mice aged 12 weeks and 54 weeks were maintained under a 12:12 light-dark cycle and subjected to a 4-h daily RF schedule. Wheel-running activity, feeding timing, intake, and body weight were monitored. Under ad libitum conditions

Exposure to Artificial Light at Night Alters Ultradian Rhythms in Endothelial Function.

INTRODUCTION: Endogenous biological timing mechanisms are fundamental aspects of living cells, tissues, and organisms. Virtually every aspect of physiology and behavior is mediated by self-sustaining circadian clocks, which depend on light to synchronize with the external daily environment. However, exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) can impair temporal adaptations and affect health and disease. METHODS: During a study of the effects of long-term ALAN exposure on cardiovascular function, we serendipitously detected ultradian rhythms in muscarinic receptor dependent relaxation of iso

Higher vulnerability to poor circadian light hygiene in individuals with a history of COVID-19.

Seven-day actigraphy was performed within 1 month in 122 community-dwelling adults (mean age 24.40 y, 31 (25.4%) men) in the same city of Tyumen, Russia. Groups with different COVID-19 status (present, COVID-19(+), n = 79 vs absent, COVID-19(-), n = 43) did not differ in mean age, gender distribution, or body mass index. Vaccination status was equally represented in the COVID groups. We found that COVID-19 status, a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, was differentially associated with daylight susceptibility. Daylight exposure was estimated using parametric and non-parametric indices: 24-h Ampli

Light Cycle Phase Effects on Behavioral Responses to Stress Exposure in Rats.

Animal models enable investigation of the impact of stress on emotional-behavioral performance to facilitate understanding of posttraumatic stress symptoms experienced in humans. Refinement of animal stress models could lead to a reduction in the number of subjects needed to detect statistically significant stress effects, in accordance with Russel and Burch's three Rs of research. We assessed whether performance of experimental procedures (that is, stress exposure and poststress behavioral testing) during the dark or light phases of the 12-h light/12 h-dark cycle is a refinement that could ac

A Detailed Re-Examination of the Period Gene Rescue Experiments Shows That Four to Six Cryptochrome-Positive Posterior Dorsal Clock Neurons (DN1p) of Drosophila melanogaster Can Control Morning and Evening Activity.

Animal circadian clocks play a crucial role in regulating behavioral adaptations to daily environmental changes. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster exhibits 2 prominent peaks of activity in the morning and evening, known as morning (M) and evening (E) peaks. These peaks are controlled by 2 distinct circadian oscillators located in separate groups of clock neurons in the brain. To investigate the clock neurons responsible for the M and E peaks, a cell-specific gene expression system, the GAL4-UAS system, has been commonly employed. In this study, we re-examined the two-oscillator model for t

Heat seekers: A tropical nocturnal lizard uses behavioral thermoregulation to exploit rare microclimates at night.

Environmental temperatures play a vital role in the physiological and behavioral activity of ectotherms. Behavioral thermoregulation allows animals to modify their body temperature to optimize functions critical to fitness, including digestion, growth, reproduction, and locomotor performance. Diurnal reptiles are a classic model system to answer questions related to thermal ecology, whereas behavioral thermoregulation in nocturnal species is thought to be strongly constrained by low environmental thermal heterogeneity at night. The few studies describing the thermal ecology of nocturnal reptil
