1. Genetically obese Zucker rats and their lean littermates were treated during 5 days with fenfluramine, mazindol or amphetamine. Norepinephrine and dopamine levels were assayed in the hypothalamus, striatum, medulla-oblongata pons and remainder of the brain, and the amine synthesis was estimated, when possible. 2. Fenfluramine acted especially on norepinephrine in the obese rat hypothalamus. 3. Mazindol was active on norepinephrine and dopamine levels only in obese animals. 4. Amphetamine acted on norepinephrine levels only in obese rats and on dopamine levels in both obese and lean rats.

A 65-year-old man had four drop attacks in several days and then a fixed stroke with quadriplegia. At autopsy infarction in the lower pons and upper medulla affected principally the corticospinal tracts. Tegmental destruction included reticular formation nuclei with rostral projections, but spared the lateral reticular formation nuclei, from which arise the descending reticulospinal tracts. This case is the first detailed autopsy report of a patient with drop attacks, and supports the view that at least some drop attacks are caused by transient ischemia of the corticospinal tracts.

We determined spatial/temporal expression of keratan sulfate proteoglycan (KS) in the developing cerebellar system, fasciculi, and dysgeneses. KS is an extracellular molecule secreted by astrocytes that forms a template for neuroblastic migration and axonal fascicles and creates perineural nets. We studied KS immunoreactivity in cerebellar cortex, deep cerebellar, inferior olivary, red and pontine nuclei, and white matter of 25 control human fetuses 12-41 weeks gestation and 16 cerebellar dysgeneses. Dentate, inferior olivary, and red nuclei were nonreactive at all ages. Pontine nuclei were po

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) and autonomic symptoms (SUNA) are trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs). The study explores the potential association between SUNCT/SUNA-like headaches and lateral pontine infarctions.
METHODS: Case series and systematic review.
RESULTS: We present three cases diagnosed with SUNCT following lateral pontine infarction on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), along with a review of these cases and 10 others from the literature.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This review sugges

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse midline glioma (DMG) of the pons occurs in pediatric patients and carries a dismal prognosis. Biopsy is not necessary for diagnosis but provides information, particularly H3K27M status, with prognostic implications. Additionally, biopsy information may open therapeutic options such as clinical trials that require mutation status. Therefore, we sought to assess the safety of surgical biopsy in DMG patients as well as its potential impact on clinical course.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients who were radiographically and clinically diagnosed with pontine DMG in t…

INTRODUCTION: Pseudobulbar affect, or emotional dysregulation, commonly occurs following stroke. However, it is frequently missed in cases involving the cerebellum, resulting in a lack of treatment, which can directly impact stroke rehabilitation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old Caucasian female with no history of mood disorders presented with gait instability, dysarthria, and right sided hemiplegia, secondary to cerebellar and pontine ischemic stroke from a basilar occlusion. She underwent endovascular therapy and her deficits gradually improved. However during recovery she began to develop

The diagnosis of central pontine hyperintensities on cranial magnetic resonance imaging has wide-spectrum clinical entities, and the pro-type diagnosis of these is central pontine myelinolysis. The rapid changes in extracellular environment due to an imbalance of electrolytes or metabolic or toxic stress to the myelin sheath can cause demyelination of white matter tracts in pons, which is why this situation could have different etiologies than just rapid sodium changes. Central pontine myelinolysis can be presented with different clinical scenarios from asymptomatic to death. Here, we present …

BACKGROUND: Disseminated diffuse midline glioma (DMG) is a devastating diagnosis. Molecular subtyping has increased our understanding of this tumor.
CASE: Here, we report the case of an 8-year-old girl who presented with symptoms of brainstem dysfunction and was found to have disseminated DMG with lesions in the pons, thalamus and bilateral temporal lobes. Molecular subtyping of the temporal lobe tumor tissue was consistent with H3 K27me3 loss and EZHIP overexpression, falling under the newly designated "H3 K27-altered" AQ5WHO subtype of DMG. Pathology from biopsy of the orbital lesion showed…

Sixteen syndrome is rare variant of one and a half syndrome resulting from lesion affecting bilateral dorsal pontine structures. This report describes a case of 16 syndrome in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A 28 year old woman with underlying lupus was presented with sudden left side body weakness and diplopia. Examination showed features of 16 syndrome with one and a half syndrome, facial diplegia and left hemiparesis. Neuroimaging revealed an acute infarct of bilateral dorsal pons. The patient was placed on antiplatelet therapy. However, she developed left leg deep vein thrombosis and p…

BACKGROUND: Given the widely distributed network of midbrain, pontine, cerebellar, and cortical areas involved in the neural control of vergence, one might expect various vergence deficits in stroke patients. In this article, we investigated the localizing value of bedside vergence testing with respect to different supratentorial and infratentorial infarction locations.
METHODS: Three hundred five stroke patients and 50 age-matched controls were examined prospectively by means of bedside tests to assess slow and fast binocular (i.e., symmetrical) as well as slow and fast monocular (i.e., asym

Central pontine myelinolysis is most commonly associated with rapid correction of hyponatremia and has historically been associated with alcoholism. In this case report, 2 deaths with gross findings of central pontine lesions led to the possibility that CPM may have been a potential mechanism of death. Subsequent analysis revealed that these lesions were incidental findings. This case report discusses the importance of appropriate microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis of suspected CPM cases.

A brainstem tumor located at the upper pons or pontomesencephalic region is surgically challenging because of the deep-seated location and difficulty to approach, especially if the lesion is intra-axial and extends anteriorly without appearing on the pia surface. In our experience, the infracollicular entry point is feasible for such lesions and can be approached by an occipital interhemispheric transtentorial corridor through a straightforward trajectory, which ensures surgical ergonomics. Herein, we present a case of a 55-yr-old woman with a pontomesencephalic lesion removed via an occipital…

An adult cat was presented with the history of 3 months' weight loss and more recent loss of balance and ataxia. An abdominal mass was palpable; results of neurologic examination suggested a brainstem disorder. The owners elected euthanasia. Postmortem findings included suppurative jejunal lymphadenitis and bilateral demyelination in the ventral pons with sparing of axons and neuronal soma. The location and character of the lesion mimicked those of human central pontine myelinolysis, an iatrogenic condition that may follow rapid correction of hyponatremia or develop spontaneously in patients w…

The subcortical nucleus of the optic tract and dorsal terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system (NOT-DTN), along with the dorsolateral pontine nucleus (DLPN), has been shown to play a pivotal role in controlling slow eye movements. Both nuclei are known to receive cortical input from striate and extrastriate cortex. To determine to what degree this cortical input arises from the same areas, and potentially from the same individual neurons, in one set of experiments we placed different retrograde tracers into the NOT-DTN and the DLPN. In the ipsilateral cortical hemisphere the two projecti

We report a case of multiple sclerosis (MS) with pathological laughing for which lesions in pontine bases are considered to be responsible. A 30-year-old man was diagnosed as having MS based on left hemiparesis, and pathological laughing, and MRI findings showing a plaque in the right pontine base as well as several plaques in the bilateral periventricular deep white matter. After remission for 6 years, his pathological laughing exacerbated in association with development of right hemiparesis. A new lesion in the left pontine base was demonstrated by MRI studies in addition to a few supratento…
