Studies of louping-ill virus (Flavivirus group) in wild red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus).

Studies were made to find evidence of louping-ill virus infection in free-living red grouse and relate this to their breeding success. In areas where ticks were abundant 61 (84%) adult grouse had antibody to the virus compared with 1 (10%) in areas where ticks were relatively scarce. Of 162 chicks tested 25 were shown to be viraemic. Infected chicks were of significantly less weight than comparably aged uninfected birds and the probability that they died was much greater than that of uninfected birds. It is concluded that the relatively poor breeding success in areas of high tick numbers was p

Aesthetics over health: stakeholder perceptions of residential window design, indoor ventilation, disease risk, and energy use in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Residential window design is a primary determinant of natural ventilation in urban housing; however, the factors driving window design choices in rapidly urbanizing sub-Saharan African cities remain poorly understood. In Dar es Salaam Tanzania, sliding aluminum windows have become increasingly dominant in the residential housing market, yet evidence on how stakeholder perceptions of these designs relate to indoor ventilation adequacy, disease risk, and household energy use remains scarce. METHOD: This mixed-methods study was conducted in Dar es Salaam Tanzania, between July and Oc

U.S. Funding Cuts and Health System Challenges in Community-Based HIV Programmes in Rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: A Qualitative Study.

Community-based organisations (CBOs) play a critical role in implementing HIV programmes, many of which have historically relied on United States (U.S.) donor funding. Recent U.S. funding cuts have disrupted community-based HIV programmes, underscoring the need to understand implementers' experiences to support sustainable service delivery. This study explored how funding instability affected community-based HIV programmes in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A qualitative, exploratory design was employed using interviews and focus group discussions with purposively selected youth frontline w

Gendered knowledge practices and human-animal-ecological health in Papua New Guinea: a qualitative study during a zoonotic tuberculosis investigation.

There have been consistent calls to incorporate gender frameworks into One Health research and policy. Men's and women's roles in relation to animals in many rural and agricultural communities may influence potential pathogen exposure and transmission patterns of zoonotic infectious diseases. However, men's and women's roles related to animals in rural societies are not static but change over time. This article draws on the results of qualitative research about perceptions and practices related to animal species and animal products in five sites located in Eastern Highlands Province and East N

Exploring type 2 diabetes self-management practices in rural Bangladesh: facilitators, barriers and expectations-a qualitative study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global public health crisis impacting low-income and middle-income countries such as Bangladesh. While self-management is encouraged for individuals with T2DM, there is a significant lack of knowledge regarding the factors of facilitators, barriers and expectations associated with T2DM self-management in Bangladesh. This research aims to investigate the potential elements that support, impede and are anticipated in the effective practice of self-management for T2DM in rural areas of Bangladesh. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will use an explo

Student's and Classmates' Prosocial Behavior predict Academic Engagement in Middle School.

Students' academic engagement is greatly informed by a classroom's social climate. However, more research is needed regarding how specific peer behavior, especially prosocial behavior, come to shape academic engagement. The present study investigated whether students' perceptions about their classmates' prosocial behavior were associated with their academic engagement (cognitive, behavioral, affective) across the school year. Indirect effects via increases in students' own prosocial behavior were examined. Participants were 905 middle school students from rural, low-income communities in the M

Exploring the lived experiences of women living with HIV in rural Zimbabwe: A qualitative study.

The study of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related stigma and discrimination has been burgeoning with important implications for public health and society, as it negatively impacts people living with HIV. However, data on the experiences of rural women living with HIV/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Zimbabwe are lacking. Women represent 50% of the global pandemic, while deaths from AIDS-related illnesses have exceeded 35 million. This study aimed to explore the experiences of rural women living with HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe. Forty rural women living with HIV were selected from 6

Gender-confirming Rhinoplasty.

Most surgeons who are not routinely treating gender dysphoric patients are more likely to see an isolated rhinoplasty consultation rather than a request for full facial gender confirmation surgery (FGCS). Different from other aspects of FGCS, the surgical basis of rhinoplasty is almost the same as for the cisgender population. Despite technical overlap, the care for patients seeking rhinoplasty for the indication of gender dysphoria vastly differs from that for the cisgender population. This review includes comments on gender norms and outline considerations for the preoperative work-up and op

More than four walls and a roof needed: A complex tertiary prevention approach for recently homeless youth.

This article examines the feasibility of a complex intervention designed to facilitate the transition of youth out of homelessness. It is intended to contribute to efforts to build out the youth homelessness intervention literature, which is underdeveloped relative to descriptive characterizations of risk. The 6-month intervention examined here, referred to as the Housing Outreach Program-Collaboration (HOP-C), is comprised of transitional outreach-based case management, individual and group mental health supports, and peer support. The intervention was delivered through a multiagency, interdi

Evaluating Survivorship Experiences and Needs Among Rural African American Breast Cancer Survivors.

Disparities in cancer survivorship exist among specific populations of breast cancer survivors, specifically rural African American breast cancer survivors (AA-BCS). While effective survivorship interventions are available to address and improve quality of life, interventions must be culturally tailored for relevance to survivors. Here, we report the results of our formative research using focus groups and in-depth interview to better understand unique rural AA-BCS survivorship experiences and needs in the Alabama Black Belt. Surveys were used to gather sociodemographic and cancer treatment da
