Predictors of missed school days among military connected families: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of research specific to military children's health, especially those with special needs. This may be partly attributed to the difficulty in accessing military connected families as a population. Yet, given the recognized importance of military connected families to the national security agenda, a need exists for studies to explore factors underlying child and family health. PURPOSE: We sought to identify factors among a sample of military children with special health care needs (CSHCN) predictive of missed school days, a commonly used measure of health and one u

Impact of health education on quality of life in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with lower quality of life (QoL) than the general population, and health education is widely proposed to help patients manage the disease. We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review of studies published between 2014 and April 2024 evaluating educational interventions in adults with CKD using a validated QoL instrument. Two reviewers independently selected studies and extracted data, resolving disagreements with a third reviewer; risk of bias was assessed with RoB2 and ROBINS-I. Twelve studies met inclusion criteria. Educational interventions were

Darwin's solution: Honeybees survive mite vectors and viruses through natural selection.

Complex host-vector-virus interfaces can impose serious health challenges. Western honeybees have experienced high colony losses globally, mainly driven by the host-shifted, virus-vectoring ectoparasitic mites Varroa destructor and Tropilaelaps mercedesae. Host populations can survive mite infestations through natural selection, offering a long-term strategy for colony health. However, host-vector-virus coevolution requires local adaptations of this triad, which is poorly understood. We propose harnessing natural selection through a global approach focused on standardized monitoring of colony

Culture and COVID-19-related mortality: a cross-sectional study of 50 countries.

Using a cross-sectional sample of 50 countries we investigate the influence of Hofstede's six-dimensions of culture on COVID-19 related mortality. A multivariable regression model was fitted that controls for health-related, economic- and policy-related variables that have been found to be associated with mortality. We included the percentage of population aged 65 and above, the prevalence of relevant co-morbidities, and tobacco use as health-related variables. Economic variables were GDP, and the connectedness of a country. As policy variables, the Oxford Stringency Index as well as stringenc

Drug abuse and its clinical implications with special reference to Nigeria.

A review of the literature shows that drug abuse has become a major public health problem in Nigeria. Alcohol, cannabis, psychostimulants and hypnosedatives are the most commonly abused drugs, although the abuse of hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin appears to be on the increase in the big cities. Drug abuse in the country now starts at an early age and cuts across all social groups. The need to incorporate drug and alcohol treatment and prevention programmes into the primary health care programmes (as part of the mental health component), was emphasised as a necessary strategy to ensure ea

Special Considerations Related to Race, Sex, Gender, and Socioeconomic Status in the Preoperative Evaluation: Part 1: Race, History of Incarceration, and Health Literacy.

Patients anticipating surgery and anesthesia benefit from preoperative care to lower risks and facilitate services on the day of surgery. Preparing patients often requires extensive evaluation and coordination of care. Vulnerable, marginalized, and disenfranchised populations have special concerns, limitations, and needs. These patients may have unidentified or poorly managed comorbidities. Underrepresented minorities and transgender patients may either avoid or have limited access to health care. Homelessness, limited health literacy, and incarceration hinder perioperative optimization initia

Births, deaths and medical emergencies in the district: a rapid participatory appraisal in Nepal.

Two qualitative rapid appraisal techniques were used in a community-based study to investigate health beliefs, attitudes and practices in a rural district in Nepal. Pregnancy and childbirth remain non-medical activities managed at home. Deaths may be avoided by better access to hospital emergency services. Health awareness of some problems, e.g. oral rehydration and diarrhoeal disease, is high; but of others, e.g. association of haemoptysis with tuberculosis, is poor. These methods require few resources, are efficient in time and manpower required, and generate useful relevant information on a

Fusion versus nonoperative management for chronic low back pain: do comorbid diseases or general health factors affect outcome?

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review of literature focused on heterogeneity of treatment effect analysis. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this systematic review were to determine if comorbid disease and general health factors modify the effect of fusion versus nonoperative management in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients? SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgical fusion as a treatment of back pain continues to be controversial due to inconsistent responses to treatment. The reasons for this are multifactorial but may include heterogeneity in the patient population and in surgeon's attitudes and approa

Taiwan joint consensus on the management of osteoporosis in patients with diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to skeletal fragility. Diabetes-related factors, including alterations in bone microarchitecture and heightened fall risk, contribute to an increased risk of fragility fractures regardless of bone mineral density. To address the distinct challenges in managing bone health in diabetes, the Taiwanese Association of Diabetes Educators, in collaboration with the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association and the Endocrine Society of the Republic of China, established an expert committee to develop consensus statements based on major exist

Updated perspectives on vitamin D deficiency, screening, supplementation and clinical guidance.

Vitamin D functions like a hormone and plays a crucial role in regulating calcium levels and maintaining normal bone metabolism. A deficiency of vitamin D can lead to an increased risk of fractures, osteoporosis and osteomalacia that’s why research has linked vitamin D deficiency to various chronic diseases and certain types of cancer, thereby enhancing interest in its overall health implications. vitamin D deficiency is still prevalent among many populations. It is often found in older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, those residing in care facilities and women who are eith

The use of psychotropic medications in autistic individuals (21 years and younger) in Western Australia: A preliminary investigation.

Prescriptions and use of medications to treat mental health conditions in young autistic populations are inconsistent worldwide. This makes it hard to compare findings from international studies to the Australian autistic population, where there are limited relevant studies. Apart from risperidone, there are no other medications specified for direct use in autistic persons. This study aims to gain initial broad understanding of the use of medications, commonly prescribed for mental health conditions, specifically by autistics under the age of 21 years. We analysed data that were previously col

Good governance in 'one health' approaches.

The authors discuss 'One Health' approaches for controlling newly recognised and re-emerging diseases of animal origin and contributions towards pandemic preparedness based on enhanced collaboration between Veterinary Services, Human Health Services and Environmental Services. Improved veterinary governance and cooperation with public health managers, social scientists, ecologists and many other stakeholders are important for reducing the risks of potential zoonoses--including foodborne diseases--at their source. Two case studies are presented to illustrate how One Health approaches can make a

Outcomes of evaluation and testing of 660 individuals with hearing loss in a pediatric genetics of hearing loss clinic.

Hearing loss is a relatively common condition in children, occurring in approximately 2 out of every 1,000 births with approximately 50% of reported diagnoses having a primary genetic etiology. Given the prevalence and genetic component of hearing loss, coupled with a trend toward early diagnosis with the institution of universal newborn hearing screening, The Genetics of Hearing Loss Clinic was established at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to manage the diagnosis, testing, and genetic counseling for individuals and families. This paper described a cohort of 660 individuals with a dia

Primary Care Integrated Management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (PRIM-COPD): study protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with China bearing a particularly high burden. Major gaps persist in early diagnosis, guideline-based treatment and long-term disease management, especially in primary care. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of the National Essential Public Health Services (NEPHS) COPD management approach and to generate evidence to inform the optimisation of national COPD care standards. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Primary Care Integrated Management (PRIM) trial is a prospe

Glaucoma Agreement in New Zealand (GAINZ).

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: With an ageing population, ophthalmologists are becoming burdened with glaucoma management, and patient care can be delayed. Therefore, the use of optometrists in glaucoma management can help alleviate the burden. BACKGROUND: The ageing population and subsequent rise of glaucoma prevalence are putting a strain on the public health system in New Zealand. Glaucoma collaborative care between optometrists and ophthalmologists has been gaining support with the aim to reduce this burden on ophthalmologists. There has been little investigation of the agreement in care and managem

Design and management of development projects to avoid health hazards.

By drawing from the examples of two dissimilar irrigation development projects it is concluded that for the success of a healthy land development project: (i) by deliberate design a suitable management organization must be set up which has the willing support of all the interested parties, which is given substance by statute and loan agreement, and which has the active support of government; (ii) the staffing should be headed by an enthusiastic person of high rank to provide historical continuity with an adequate secretariat to give effective technical and administrative support; (iii) a deter

The survival penalty: Age-based inequities in hypertension and diabetes management in African health systems (1990-2022) - a secondary quantitative analysis.

Africa is experiencing rapid population ageing, yet many health systems remain oriented towards acute and infectious disease care. Whether population-level indicators of hypertension and diabetes management remain comparable across older age groups is unclear. We assessed age-associated differences in chronic disease care cascade indicators across African Union member states using age-stratified estimates from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC). We analysed country-year estimates for hypertension (1990-2019) and diabetes (1990-2022), comparing a working-age reference group (50-54 yea

Population medicine and control of epidemics.

Population medicine is an important component of veterinary care in livestock (farm animals) and companion animals (pets). This chapter covers some of the chemotherapeutic approaches undertaken at population level to control infectious diseases in domestic animals. Optimisation of health, productivity and welfare in livestock commonly entails implementation of whole-herd or whole-flock strategies to effectively counter the negative impact of infectious diseases. Gastro-intestinal and liver parasites of grazing cattle and sheep are endemic in most parts of the world and can result in significan
