Assessment of selected adipocytokines in obese women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis and obesity are considered civilisation diseases. Menopause is a time of increased bone resorption and increased mass of adipose tissue. Adipocytokines secreted by the adipose tissue are believed to be a potential factor in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of this research was to assess leptin, adiponectin, and resistin secretion in obese postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and determine whether obesity might be a factor mitigating the risk of osteoporosis. The study involved 80 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis divided into gr

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis reference genes for qPCR expression assays.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a multifactorial disease influenced by genetic factors in more than half of the cases. In spite of the efforts to clarify the relationship among genetic factors and susceptibility to develop OP, many genetic associations need to be further functionally validated. Besides, some limitations as the choice of stably expressed reference genes (RG) should be overcome to ensure the quality and reproducibility of gene expression assays. To our knowledge, a validation study for RG in OP is still missing. We compared the expression levels, using polymerase chain reaction quantitativ

The efficacy of pharmacotherapy in postmenopausal osteoporosis: a longitudinal observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was an assessment of longitudinal changes in fracture probability in postmenopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 226 postmenopausal women at baseline mean age 66.46 ± 7.96 years were studied. There were 21 women without therapy, 102 taking calcium + vitamin D, and 103 women on antiresorptive therapy, in the study group. Data concerning clinical risk factors for osteoporosis and hip BMD were gathered. Fracture probability for major and hip fractures was established using FRAXTM. RESULTS: Mean follow-up time was 2.43 ± 0.59 years. Baseline FRAX val

Weight loss and breast cancer incidence in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity is an established risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer, the results of weight loss and breast cancer studies are inconsistent. Therefore, we evaluated associations between weight change and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study. METHODS: Postmenopausal women (n = 61,335) who had no prior breast cancer and a normal mammogram had body weight and height measured and body mass index (BMI) calculated at baseline and year 3. Weight change at year 3 was categorized as stable (<5%), loss (≥5%), or gain (≥5%

An unusual circulating steroid profile in a virilized postmenopausal woman.

BACKGROUND: Virilism is a female disorder in which secondary male sexual characteristics develop, caused by an excessive adrenal or ovarian androgen secretion. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report an unusual case of an ovarian steroid cell tumor, not otherwise specified (NOS), in a 68-year-old female who presented with androgenic alopecia, clitoromegaly and an increased muscle mass. Laboratory investigations revealed both ovarian and adrenal hyperandrogenism with an elevation of androgen precursors mimicking congenital adrenal hyperplasia. A left adnexal mass was confirmed by imaging techniques

[Low magnitude whole-body vibration and postmenopausal osteoporosis].

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a type of osteoporosis with high bone transformation rate, caused by a decrease of estrogen in the body, which is a systemic bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass and increased risk of fracture. In recent years, as a kind of non-pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis, defined by whole-body vibration less than 1 g ( g = 9.81 m/s 2), low magnitude whole-body vibration is widely concerned, mainly because of its small side effects, simple operation and relative safety. Studies have shown that low magnitude whole-body vibration can improve bone strength,

A Case of Granular Cell Tumor of the Clitoris in a Postmenopausal Woman.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare soft tissue tumor that derived from Schwann cells. Most are benign, less than 2% are malignant and, in the malignant cases, the prognosis of survival is poor. Most of these tumors are less than 3 cm in size, and they are more common in black women. The disease usually occurs in the 40s to the 60s and occurs after menopause, but there are few cases reported in adolescence. A 45-year-old woman visited the outpatient clinic with a solid mass that developed 2 years ago and present to date on the left side of the clitoris. After complete resection, pathologic exa

Menopause and postmenopausal hormone therapy and risk of hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Menopause may be a risk factor for hearing loss, and postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) has been proposed to slow hearing decline; however, there are no large prospective studies. We prospectively examined the independent relations between menopause and postmenopausal HT and risk of self-reported hearing loss. METHODS: Prospective cohort study among 80,972 women in the Nurses' Health Study II, baseline age 27 to 44 years, followed from 1991 to 2013. Baseline and updated information was obtained from detailed validated biennial questionnaires. Cox proportional-hazards regression mo

Targeting Sclerostin in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: Focus on Romosozumab and Blosozumab.

Most current treatments for osteoporosis inhibit bone resorption and reduce total fracture numbers by about one-quarter. The identification of the osteocytic protein sclerostin as a potent regulator of bone turnover and bone density has led to the development of a new therapeutic class-agents that inhibit sclerostin activity, resulting in increased bone formation and reduced bone resorption. Romosozumab and blosozumab are monoclonal antibodies that bind to sclerostin, reducing its inhibition of Wnt signaling. They have comparable activities in phase I and II studies, doubling formation markers

Intestinal obstruction associated with ovarian remnant in postmenopausal female.

Ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) is a rare condition, in which the ovarian tissue is inadvertently left behind after difficult oophorectomy. The most common preexisting conditions associated for this complication include endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and prior abdominal surgery as in these conditions, removal of ovarian tissue becomes difficult. This is likely due to the presence of the dense fibrotic adhesions between an ovary and the surrounding structures. This residual ovarian tissue can become functional and cystic. A 56-year-old multigravida postmenopausal female was diagnose
