This paper examines the effect of various arm postures on peak pinch strength. Twenty (20) able-bodied, male subjects volunteered to participate in a set of two experiments. The first experiment examined the effect of shoulder and elbow posture on peak pinch strength. The second experiment examined the effect of forearm posture, wrist posture, and pinch type on peak pinch strength. Dizziness and subjective balance disturbances are common complaints in cervical pain syndromes. We assessed balance function with posturography using vibration-induced and galvanically-induced body sway in consecutive patients (n = 116) with cervico-brachial pain syndrome of more than 3 months' duration. To determine the postural role of longus colli (LC) and dorsal neck muscles, we have studied the relationship between their cross-sectional areas related to their force of contraction and the lordosis and the length of the cervical spine. This study was carried out in 36 healthy subjects. Muscle cross-sectional areas were measured by computerized tomography. The index of lordosis and the length of the cervical spine were measured on an X-ray profile. The cross-sectional area of LC was correlated to the lordosis index (R = -0.432, p < 0.02) whereas all the other parameters were not correlated.

A young female with autonomic failure is described. She successfully reduced the symptoms of orthostatic hypotension by application of physical manoeuvres like leg-crossing, bending forward and placing a foot on a chair. The beneficial effects of these manoeuvres can be explained by a small (10-15 mmHg) increase in mean arterial pressure to a level just sufficient to maintain adequate cerebral blood flow. When essential tremor involves the head, it produces a rhythmic, periodic movement with a certain fixed frequency and a variable amplitude. The axis of the tremor has been described as either horizontal (no-no) or vertical (yes-yes) and is present when the head is in an action or postural position. Seven patients who differ in symptoms are described; one subgroup exhibited a combined resting-postural tremor of the head, sometimes with a changing axis; three patients had only postural head tremor with a changing axis.

Using a series of graded destabilizing forces, we have developed a simple quantitative test of the postural response: the Postural Stress Test (PST). Suitable for widespread testing of elderly subjects, the test evaluates the subject's ability to avoid a fall as well as the appropriateness of the response. Twenty patients with previous unilateral traumatic hyphaema and 25 age-matched controls were studied. There was a progressive rise in intraocular pressure when the patient changed from the standing to the sitting position and then to the lying position in both groups. No control eye showed a rise greater than 2 mmHg when the subject changed from sitting to lying. However, 14 (70%) of the injured eyes and 12 (60%) of the fellow eyes showed an exaggerated response. The superb contrast resolution of computed tomography permits visualization of layering of fluid components of varying densities in tumors and hematomas which cannot be observed with conventional radiographic techniques.
