The roles of predictors in cardiovascular risk models - a question of modeling culture?

BACKGROUND: While machine learning (ML) algorithms may predict cardiovascular outcomes more accurately than statistical models, their result is usually not representable by a transparent formula. Hence, it is often unclear how specific values of predictors lead to the predictions. We aimed to demonstrate with graphical tools how predictor-risk relations in cardiovascular risk prediction models fitted by ML algorithms and by statistical approaches may differ, and how sample size affects the stability of the estimated relations. METHODS: We reanalyzed data from a large registry of 1.5 million p

A simple prediction score for kidney disease in the Korean population.

AIM: Screening algorithms for chronic kidney disease have been developed and validated in American populations. Given the worldwide burden of kidney disease, developing algorithms for populations outside the USA is needed. METHODS: Using simple, non-invasive questions, we developed a prediction model for chronic kidney disease from national population samples in Korea. The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 6565) was used for model development while validation was performed in two independent population samples, internal (n = 2921) and external datasets (n = 8166). Integrative machine learning approaches for enzyme kinetic parameter prediction.

The prediction of enzyme kinetic parameters, particularly $\mathit{k}_{\text{cat}}$ and $\mathit{K}_{\text{m}}$, is rapidly evolving from physics-based modeling toward data-driven artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, driven by expanding biochemical databases and advances in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). We focus on AI-based enzyme kinetic parameter prediction, with an emphasis on $\mathit{k}_{\text{cat}}$ and $\mathit{K}_{\text{m}}$, while also considering related parameters, such as $\mathit{K}_{\text{i}}$ and $\mathit{k}_{\text{cat}}/\mathit{K}_{\text{m}}$. Q performance 2: Toward Unbiased Selection of Machine-Learning Regression Models.

Selecting a single best machine-learning regression model from a set of competing models can be challenging. While models selected based on cross-validation performance do not guarantee good predictions on external data, models selected solely on external validation performance do not ascertain precise predictions for other external sets. Therefore, we propose three quantitative metrics to guide modelers in selecting the best model using the modeling set information only. Three quantitative data sets of varying sizes and complexities were considered. Each data set was randomly split into a mod

Machine Learning Approach for Intraocular Disease Prediction Based on Aqueous Humor Immune Mediator Profiles.

PURPOSE: Various immune mediators have crucial roles in the pathogenesis of intraocular diseases. Machine learning can be used to automatically select and weigh various predictors to develop models maximizing predictive power. However, these techniques have not yet been applied extensively in studies focused on intraocular diseases. We evaluated whether 5 machine learning algorithms applied to the data of immune-mediator levels in aqueous humor can predict the actual diagnoses of 17 selected intraocular diseases and identified which immune mediators drive the predictive power of a machine lear

A deep learning optimized model for classification and detection of rice leaf diseases.

Food productivity, quantity and quality are at stake when plant diseases such as rice diseases undermine the food security. Rice leaf disease treatment necessitates accurate and timely diagnosing. This study describes a deep learning model for categorizing and forecasting rice plant diseases. Using the remora optimization algorithm (ROA) on a rice leaf dataset demonstrates its potential for plant disease classification. The ROA-DM method detects rice leaf diseases using the ROA algorithm, a deep maxout network (DMN), and a deep autoencoder (DAE). ROA is applied to the learning parameters of de

Data-driven methods allow prediction of utility of DNA rework.

In forensic DNA casework, complex trace samples may benefit from rework procedures involving additional PCR replicates and lowered analytical thresholds. These procedures may strongly increase or decrease the likelihood ratio (LR), simplifying decisions to be taken downstream. However, the procedures are resource-intensive. Decisions to pursue rework currently rely on laboratory guidelines and expert judgment rather than empirical evidence. This study aims to develop a model that predicts whether rework will yield a more decisive LR, defined as crossing the laboratory's reporting thresholds. T

Machine learning based prediction of platelet concentration from ROTEM measurements.

Viscoelastic testing is an established standard in modern coagulation medicine, reducing transfusion needs. However, it does not provide direct information on platelet count. Here, we present a machine learning approach to predict platelet count and to detect low platelet count based on standard rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) parameters. We analyzed 2,333 anonymised datasets collected from multiple centres between 2014 and 2023. Six machine learning methods (Regression, Gradient Boosting Methods, extreme Gradient Boosting, Random Forests, Neural Networks, and Stacked Ensemble Learning)

Machine learning prediction of common bile duct stones using synthetic data to guide emergency ERCP decisions.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) remains the standard for common bile duct (CBD) stone removal. However, current guidelines often result in unnecessary procedures. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model using synthetic data augmentation to improve CBD stone prediction. Electronic health records from patients with suspected CBD stones were analyzed from three independent tertiary centers (733 patients for internal validation, 348 for external validation). A large language model (LLM) generated curated synthetic data to augment the training dataset

Development and application of an early prediction model for risk of bloodstream infection based on real-world study.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream Infection (BSI) is a severe systemic infectious disease that can lead to sepsis and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), resulting in high mortality rates and posing a major public health burden globally. Early identification of BSI is crucial for effective intervention, reducing mortality, and improving patient outcomes. However, existing diagnostic methods are flawed by low specificity, long detection times and high demands on testing platforms. The development of artificial intelligence provides a new approach for early disease identification. This study aims

External validation of GDM risk prediction models using a machine learning reciprocal model-exchange framework.

BACKGROUND: Although many risk prediction models have been developed, very few undergo external validation, primarily due to issues with data access. Therefore, we implemented a reciprocal model-exchange approach to facilitate external validation and demonstrate its use with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) prediction models. OBJECTIVE: To assess the robustness and generalisability of two independently developed GDM risk prediction models using a reciprocal model-exchange framework. METHODS: Two independently developed GDM risk prediction models were externally validated using a reciproca

Decision support systems (DSS) for predicting hypertensive events using real-world telemonitoring data.

OBJECTIVE: This study contributes to the limited literature on applying machine learning (ML) to telemonitoring data for timely decision support systems (DSS). We propose an end-to-end DSS framework to enable clinicians to intervene proactively by generating actionable information from daily telemonitoring data. The goal was to predict the probability of patients having an adverse event in the next 7 days using real-world data. We focus on the framework for effective development of a human-computer hybrid system that utilizes ML models to predict adverse hypertensive events and evaluate differ

An inductive algorithm approach to knowledge acquisition for expert system development. A pilot study.

Knowledge acquisition, which consists of knowledge elicitation and knowledge representation, often is considered the weakest link in the design of expert systems. Systems frequently are built on the knowledge of one expert and require extensive use of knowledge engineering techniques to elicit this knowledge from the expert. Inductive algorithms are a potential alternative method of knowledge acquisition for expert system development. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility of applying machine learning techniques, specifically, inductive algorithms, to an existing research d
