Collaborative referencing between individuals with aphasia and routine communication partners.

H. H. Clark (1992) argues that successful referencing depends on speakers and listeners working together to establish shared perspectives on target objects. In his collaborative referencing model, he identifies 3 phases in the referencing process: initiation, refashioning, and acceptance. For referencing tasks, successful collaboration can be seen in the streamlining of referencing expressions and in the decrease of overt collaborative effort across trials. Although previous studies have shown that speakers with aphasia can be successful on referencing tasks, they have not examined how that su

A demonstration of observational learning in rats using a bidirectional control.

Hungry rats observed a conspecific demonstrator pushing a single manipulandum, a joystick, to the right or to the left for food reward and were then allowed access to the joystick from a different orientation. The effects of right-pushing vs left-pushing observation experience on (1) response acquisition, (2) reversal of a left-right discrimination, and (3) responding in extinction, were examined. Rats that had observed left-pushing made more left responses during acquisition than rats that had observed right-pushing, and rats that had observed demonstrators pushing in the direction that had p

Switch Off Totally or Switch Off Strategically? The Consequences of Thinking About Work on Job Performance.

As a universal workplace phenomenon, the impact of work-related rumination on job performance is attracting scholars' attention. In the current study, the relationship between two types of work-related rumination, counterproductive behavior, and creativity at work were examined, as well as the mechanism of this association. Participants were 1109 employees from a variety of jobs in mainland China. The results showed that affective rumination was negatively associated with employees' work creativity and positively associated with counterproductive behavior. On the contrary, problem-solving pond

Use of a multicomponent treatment for food refusal.

We examined the use of a multicomponent treatment for food refusal exhibited by a 5-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with mild to moderate mental retardation. Treatment consisted of access to highly preferred tangible items, which were removed contingent on problem behavior or not accepting a bite, and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior. Treatment resulted in an increase in food acceptance to 100% of bite offers and near-zero rates of problem behavior. In addition, the participant's caregivers were successfully trained to implement the treatment.

Evidence-based interventions for adolescents with disruptive behaviors in school-based settings.

Disruptive behaviors in the school setting can threaten the maintenance of optimal learning environments in schools. Challenging behaviors, such as defiance, hostility, and aggression, often define disruptive classroom behaviors. This article presents a clinical review of existing literature on interventions for adolescent disruptive behavior problems in school-based settings and in outpatient mental health settings and makes recommendations around working with adolescents with disruptive behaviors in school-based settings. Many types of interventions are effective; effective implementation is

Using written communication with patient groups to promote behavioral change in chronic mentally ill patients.

Patient-managed problem-solving groups have been used in inpatient settings to increase the responsible activity of patients with chronic mental illness. In a study using a repeated measures design, staff prepared written notes describing patients' adherence to programmatic expectations and submitted them to patient-managed problem-solving groups, which recommended consequences for patients' behavior. The intervention increased the frequency of targeted behavior compared with the frequency of the behavior during baseline periods. The authors suggest that this procedure may be applied to a vari

Mechanisms of Change in a Self-Help Parenting Program for Child Behavioral Difficulties: the Role of Unsupportive Parenting.

Self-help parenting programs that are aimed at reducing child behavioral difficulties may be effective and accessible alternatives to face-to-face parenting programs. Insight into the mechanisms of change for such programs is important to enhance their effectiveness. The goal of this study was to examine whether changes in supportive and unsupportive parenting (measured by the Parenting Practices Interview; PPI) and parenting sense of competence (measured by the Parenting Sense of Competence scale; PSOC) mediated the effects of a self-help parenting program on child behavioral difficulties. Sex and age as moderators in the expression of internalizing and externalizing behaviors: insights from the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL).

BACKGROUND: Children referred for anxiety disorders frequently show both internalizing and externalizing problems, but the role of sex and age in shaping these behavioral expressions remains unclear. Prior research suggests sex differences may shift across development, yet findings have been inconsistent. METHODS: We analyzed data from 600 children (ages 6-17; 53.2% male) referred to a pediatric anxiety specialty clinic in the Northeastern United States between 2013 and 2021. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18). Ordinary least squares regression models with an interacti

Parents' Spontaneous Attributions about their Problem Child: Associations with Parental Mental Health and Child Conduct Problems.

Parents' attributions about their child's personality and behaviour are known to predict the quality of parent-child interactions and outcomes for the child, including those from parenting interventions. Nothing is known, however, about the quantity and quality of attributions parents use during free speech about their children referred for treatment of behavioural and emotional problems. We tested hypotheses about the types of attributions and associations among parental attributions, parental psychopathology and child conduct problems, using 504 five-minute speech samples (FMSS) coded using

Application of the Impulsive Aggression Diary in Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Objective: Impulsive aggression (IA) is a maladaptive form of aggressive behavior that is an associated feature of neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As one of the most common forms of aggressive behavior, IA is a serious clinical concern. Recognition, monitoring, and management of IA symptoms are complicated by the lack of IA-specific psychometric instruments and evidence-based treatments. A recently developed electronic observer-reported outcome instrument has been validated in children for monitoring the frequency of 15 IA-related behavior

Young adult drinking-driving: behavioral and psychosocial correlates.

Behavioral and psychosocial correlates of drinking and driving were examined in two independent samples of licensed drivers aged 18 to 25 selected from the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles database. Mail questionnaires were returned by 2,300 young adults (1,196 in Sample 1; 1,104 in Sample 2). Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relation of a latent-variable measure of drinking-driving to latent-variable measures of other driving behaviors, problem behaviors and psychosocial variables. Drinking-driving, drug-driving and risky driving were found to comprise a more general, s…

Renewal of challenging behavior in an intensive outpatient clinic: Replication and extension to task changes.

Retrospective analyses have shown that renewal of challenging behavior following person or setting changes is common. This study replicates and extends prior work by evaluating renewal after a third type of context change: task changes. Among 98 patients in an intensive outpatient clinic who experienced 749 context changes, overall renewal prevalence was 25.23% using a max-of-5 criterion (39.79% using a mean-of-2 criterion), consistent with prior reports across this large sample. Of the 63 patients who experienced at least one task change, 36 (57.14%) exhibited renewal. Task changes produced h

Examining the Relation Between Sleep Problems and Behavioural Challenges in Youth With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The connection between sleep problems and behavioural challenges in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) has been a central focus of research across different age groups. However, uncertainty remains regarding this association, particularly when relying solely on daily-based assessments. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep problems and behavioural challenges at both overall (macro) and daily (micro) levels among youth with DS. METHODS: Sleep disturbances were measured in a sample of 65 youth with DS aged 6-17 years using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionna

Co-rumination between friends: Considering the roles of outcome expectations, relationship provisions, and perceptions of problems.

Despite its implications for adjustment, little is known about factors that support co-rumination in friendships. The current multi-method, longitudinal study addressed this question with 554 adolescents (Mage = 14.50; 52% girls; 62% White; 31% Black; 7% Asian American) from the Midwestern United States in 2007-2010. Adolescents were observed talking about problems with a friend and reported on their outcome expectations for problem disclosures, relationship provisions during problem talk, and problem perceptions after problem talk. Participants reported on outcome expectations again 9 months

Prenatal Stress Exposure Amplifies Effect of Maternal Suicidal Ideation on Early Childhood Behavioral Trajectories.

The in utero environment influences fetal development and may predispose to disease later in life. This study examines whether maternal suicidal ideation during pregnancy is associated with children's behavioral trajectories across early childhood, and whether prenatal maternal traumatic stress accelerates the trajectories. The study included mother-child dyads (N = 331, 51.1% boys) from the longitudinal Stress In Pregnancy study; 31.1% (n = 103) mothers were Exposed to Superstorm Sandy. During their second trimester, 12.4% (n = 41) women reported suicidal ideation during pregnancy. Mothers co

Some critical considerations in applying the construct of psychopathy to research and classification of childhood disruptive behavior disorders.

The recent inclusion of callous-unemotional traits in the diagnostic criteria for serious conduct problems has led to renewed interest in more comprehensive integrations of the construct of psychopathy into research and clinical classification of childhood disruptive behavior disorders. There have been a number of recent reviews of research focusing the many potential benefits for this integration. However, there are also a number of issues that could reduce these benefits and even potentially lead to harmful effects. The current paper focuses on several of these issues, some of which are comm

Co-occurring medical and behavioural conditions in children with Down syndrome with or without ADHD symptom presentation.

BACKGROUND: Co-occurring attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a challenge to characterise in the presence of other medical conditions commonly present in children with Down syndrome (DS). The current study examined differences among children with DS with or without ADHD symptomatology in terms of demographics, developmental level, co-occurring medical conditions, and parent and teacher ratings of behaviour and executive functioning. METHODS: Parents and teachers of 108 school-age children with DS provided ratings of ADHD symptoms, behaviour problems and executive functioning ski

Facial emotion recognition in children with externalising behaviours: A systematic review.

Difficulties in facial emotion recognition (FER) are associated with a range of mental health and antisocial presentations in adolescents and adults. Externalising behaviours in children are often one of the earliest signs of risk for the development of such difficulties. This article systematically reviews the evidence (from both group and correlational studies) for whether there is a relationship between FER and externalising behaviours in pre-adolescent children (aged 12 and under), both across and within externalising behaviour domains (hyperactivity, conduct problems, callous-unemotional
