Muscle magnesium and capillary basement membrane thickness in diabetes mellitus.

To evaluate a possible relationship between Mg deficiency and the development of microvascular disease in diabetes mellitus, quadriceps muscle biopsies for estimating Mg content and capillary basement membrane thickness, were studied in 16 patients with type I diabetes. The diabetic individuals had a slightly but significantly reduced muscle Mg content as compared with 13 healthy controls. There was a significant, positive correlation between capillary basement membrane width and age in the diabetic group, but no relationship between membrane thickness and muscle or serum concentration of Mg. …

Delayed presentation of compartment syndrome of the thigh secondary to quadriceps trauma and vascular injury in a soccer athlete.

INTRODUCTION: Compartment syndrome isolated to the anterior thigh is a rare complication of soccer injury. Previous reports in the English literature on sports trauma-related compartment syndrome of the thigh are vague in their description of the response of thigh musculature to blunt trauma, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of high-risk features of compartment syndrome, vascular injury in quadriceps trauma, and the role of vascular study in blunt thigh injury. CASE REPORT: We present herein the rare case of a 30-year-old man who developed thigh compartment syndrome 8 days after socc

Subcutaneous injections as a risk factor of myositis ossificans traumatica in spinal cord injury.

Myositis ossificans traumatica is a pathological condition characterized by extraskeletal bone formation, induced by major or repeated minor trauma to the muscles. Our objective is to report an unusual case of myositis ossificans traumatica in a paraplegic patient. Bilateral swelling and erythema on the thighs of a 1-month paraplegic inpatient was diagnosed as myositis ossificans traumatica in the quadriceps muscles due to low-molecular-weight heparin injections for deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis. As a result, repeated injections under the spinal cord injury level should be avoided when poss…

Bilateral simultaneous rupture of the quadriceps tendons.

Bilateral simultaneous rupture of the quadriceps tendons is very rare and occurred in an 82-year-old man. This may be the fifth case to have been reported in the English literature. Only minor stress on extensor mechanisms preceded the ruptures. Interrupted mattress sutures restored muscle continuity and function. A "pull-out" wire system was not used for protection of healing muscles because adequate amount of tissue mass was available for approximation. Excellent results require intensive postoperative physical therapy. Old age of the patient should not be a deterrent to surgical treatment i

T2-weighted MR imaging of thigh muscle response in male distance runners wearing advanced footwear technology.

BACKGROUND: Advanced footwear technology shoes (AFTs) combine highly resilient midsoles with embedded carbon-fiber plates and are known to alter knee joint kinetics and perceived stability. Whether these biomechanical and perceptual differences translate into altered muscle metabolic responses at the thigh in running remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify whether AFTs elicited greater exercise-induced transverse relaxation times (T2) shifts (an MR imaging index of metabolic responses in activated muscles) in quadriceps and hamstrings compared with traditional running shoes (T

Expression of Muscle-Specific MiRNA 206 in the Progression of Disease in a Murine SMA Model.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disease, the most common in infancy, and the third one among young people under 18 years. The major pathological landmark of SMA is a selective degeneration of lower motor neurons, resulting in progressive skeletal muscle denervation, atrophy, and paralysis. Recently, it has been shown that specific or general changes in the activity of ribonucleoprotein containing micro RNAs (miRNAs) play a role in the development of SMA. Additionally miRNA-206 has been shown to be required for efficient regeneration of neuromuscular synapses after acute

Lack of association between estrogen receptor genotypes and bone mineral density, fracture history, or muscle strength in elderly women.

The PvuII polymorphism of the estrogen receptor (ESR) gene and its relation to bone mineral density (BMD), fracture history, and muscle strength was studied in 313 postmenopausal (76 +/- 5 years) women of Caucasian origin, of whom 142 had suffered from a fragility fracture after the age of 50 years (14 with fracture of the hip, 38 of the spine, 45 of the wrist, and 85 of other bones). The ESR genotype distribution was similar in women with and without a history of fragility fracture (PP 21%, Pp 43%, pp 36% compared with PP 18%, Pp 47%, pp 35%). We did not find a correlation between the ESR gen

Hamstrings vibration reduces tibiofemoral compressive force following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Individuals who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are at greater risk of developing knee osteoarthritis (OA). This elevated risk of knee OA is associated with high tibiofemoral (TF) compressive force, due to a combination of low knee flexion angles and increased co-contraction of the hamstrings and quadriceps during limb loading. Prolonged vibration of the hamstrings fatigues the intrafusal muscle fibers, which reduces autonomic reflexive excitation of the hamstrings and alleviates reciprocal inhibition to the quadriceps. The aim of this study was to examine the e

Quadriceps strength in women with a previous hip fracture: relationships to physical ability and bone mass.

Associations between physical ability, level of current physical activity and bone mass were examined in 47 elderly women (mean age 80 years) who had suffered from a hip fracture 3-36 months (mean 17 months) previously. Measures of physical ability included isokinetic quadriceps strength of both the non-fractured and fractured leg, and walking and stair climbing speed. An estimate of current physical activity was made using the Northwick Park activity index questionnaire specifically designed for hip fracture patients. Bone mineral density of the spine and hip (Ward's triangle, femoral neck an

[Scurvy and adrenal insufficiency].

We describe a case of scurvy in a 32-year-old woman. The disease was associated with bilateral tumours of the quadriceps muscles and malignancy was considered. Adrenal insufficiency was also diagnosed. All abnormalities subsided in response to vitamin C therapy. It is unknown whether there is a causal link between the two diseases, but evaluation of adrenal function seems justified in future cases of scurvy.

Applying SENIAM Guidelines to Shear Wave Elastography: A Novel Approach to Standardizing Transducer Placement for Muscle Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) is used to assess musculoskeletal tissue properties, but methodological inconsistencies, particularly in probe placement, have limited the generalizability of findings. Therefore, this technical note investigated the use of standardized surface muscle electromyography sensor placement guidelines for ultrasound transducer placement during SWE on lower-limb muscle tissue. METHODS: A total of 31 individuals with unilateral symptoms of knee osteoarthritis were recruited from the community. Quadriceps muscle SWE measures were acquired and anal…

Glycogen complexes in muscle in Reye's syndrome simulating virus-like particles.

Crystalline arrays of virus-like particles were present in the psoas muscle in six of eight autopsied cases of Reye's syndrome. These structures were concentrated in the perinuclear regions of peripheral muscle nuclei and were less abundant about the triad regions. The particles were stained by histochemical techniques for glycogen, and digestion with diastase resulted in removal of particles from these crystalline lattices. Virus-like particles were also present in crystalline arrays in psoas, quadriceps, and diaphragm muscles in six of eight autopsied cases of children and adults who died of

Integrated rehabilitation incorporating aquatic therapy following posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Rehabilitation following posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction can be challenging because of improper muscle activation and excessive joint loading which could further delay graft healing. Aquatic therapy provides a buoyancy-assisted aquatic environment, where reduced effective body weight and joint loading may facilitate early functional recovery while minimizing stress on the reconstructed ligament. However, evidence regarding aquatic rehabilitation following PCL reconstruction remains limited. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old woman presented for physiotherapy 4 week

T1 and T2* mapping of the human quadriceps and patellar tendons using ultra-short echo-time (UTE) imaging and bivariate relaxation parameter-based volumetric visualization.

Quantification of magnetic resonance (MR)-based relaxation parameters of tendons and ligaments is challenging due to their very short transverse relaxation times, requiring application of ultra-short echo-time (UTE) imaging sequences. We quantify both T1 and T2* in the quadriceps and patellar tendons of healthy volunteers at a field strength of 3 T and visualize the results based on 3D segmentation by using bivariate histogram analysis. We applied a 3D ultra-short echo-time imaging sequence with either variable repetition times (VTR) or variable flip angles (VFA) for T1 quantification in combi
