Cirsoid aneurysm of coronary arteries associated with arterioventricular fistula evaluated by 64-multidetector CT coronary angiography: depiction of a case.

A female patient with severe pulmonary hypertension was admitted for lung transplant evaluation. As an incidental finding, the chest CT showed diffuse and dilated coronaries, not detected at previous echocardiography. A coronary CT angiography was then performed using a 64-multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scanner to better evaluate the coronary tree. The images obtained after postprocessing demonstrated tremendously aneurysmatic and tortuous coronary arteries and the presence of a septal branch deepening into the myocardium and penetrating the right ventricle cavity, forming an abnorma

Automatic 3D Segmentation and Identification of Anomalous Aortic Origin of the Coronary Arteries Combining Multi-view 2D Convolutional Neural Networks.

This work aimed to automatically segment and classify the coronary arteries with either normal or anomalous origin from the aorta (AAOCA) using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), seeking to enhance and fasten clinician diagnosis. We implemented three single-view 2D Attention U-Nets with 3D view integration and trained them to automatically segment the aortic root and coronary arteries of 124 computed tomography angiographies (CTAs), with normal coronaries or AAOCA. Furthermore, we automatically classified the segmented geometries as normal or AAOCA using a decision tree model. For CTAs in t

Flank pain, hypertension, and hematuria: CT and 3D cinematic rendering in the evaluation of renal artery emergencies-a pictorial essay.

Non-traumatic acute renal artery emergencies encompass a spectrum of etiologies, including renal artery stenosis, arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms, dissections, thrombosis, and vasculitis. Prompt and accurate diagnosis in the emergency setting is crucial due to the potential for significant morbidity and mortality. Computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA) are the mainstay imaging modalities, offering rapid acquisition and high diagnostic accuracy. The integration of 3D postprocessing techniques, such as 3D cinematic rendering (CR), improves the diagnostic wor

Surface curvature as a classifier of abdominal aortic aneurysms: a comparative analysis.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) carries one of the highest mortality rates among vascular diseases when it ruptures. To predict the role of surface curvature in rupture risk assessment, a discriminatory analysis of aneurysm geometry characterization was conducted. Data was obtained from 205 patient-specific computed tomography image sets corresponding to three AAA population subgroups: patients under surveillance, those that underwent elective repair of the aneurysm, and those with an emergent repair. Each AAA was reconstructed and their surface curvatures estimated using the biquintic Herm

Multiphasic contrast injection for improved precision of parameter estimates in functional CT.

Contrast injection protocol is known to affect the estimation of kinetic parameters in functional CT. A novel method is proposed to maximize the precision of parameter estimates by modulating the contrast injection scheme. The method models the intravenous contrast bolus to be dispersed by a "patient function" to give rise to the arterial input function, which, in turn, carries the contrast agent to tissue leading to contrast enhancement. The covariance matrix analysis was applied to calculate the uncertainty of parameter estimates as the coefficients of variation (CV) in the adiabatic tissue

[Computer tomography angiography of the cerebral and cervical vessels].

Due to the high temporal and spatial resolution in multislice computed tomography it is possible to perform high-quality computer tomography angiography (CTA) of the cerebral and cervical vessels. Compared to digital subtraction angiography (DSA), a method that is still considered to be the golden standard, CTA is faster and can be performed using a minimal invasive technique. In this paper we outline the clinical indications for performing CTA (aneurysms, stroke, vasospasms, arterio-venous malformations, dissection). Examples of scan protocols are given both for angiography of the cerebral ve

Integration of clinicopathologic identification and deep transferrable image feature representation improves predictions of lymph node metastasis in prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of pelvic lymph node metastasis (PLNM) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) is crucial for determining appropriate treatment options. Here, we built a PLNM-Risk calculator to obtain a precisely informed decision about whether to perform extended pelvic lymph node dissection (ePLND). METHODS: The PLNM-Risk calculator was developed in 280 patients and verified internally in 71 patients and externally in 50 patients by integrating a set of radiologists' interpretations, clinicopathological factors and newly refined imaging indicators from MR images with radi

Clinical validation of coronal and sagittal spinal curve measurements based on three-dimensional vertebra vector parameters.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: For many decades, visualization and evaluation of three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformities have only been possible by two-dimensional (2D) radiodiagnostic methods, and as a result, characterization and classification were based on 2D terminologies. Recent developments in medical digital imaging and 3D visualization techniques including surface 3D reconstructions opened a chance for a long-sought change in this field. Supported by a 3D Terminology on Spinal Deformities of the Scoliosis Research Society, an approach for 3D measurements and a new 3D classification of scoliosi

Tarsal shape, size, and articulating surface morphology in adolescent surgically treated clubfoot and their contralateral normal foot.

Despite the inability of radiographic measurements to quantify the 3-dimensional (3D) shape and size of the hindfoot bones affected by the clubfoot pathology, radiographs continue to be used to evaluate treatment efficacy. Advancements in imaging and image analysis allow new quantitative insights to be obtained into bone shape and size. Therefore, this study sought to quantify and compare the 3D size, shape, and articulating surface morphology of the tibia, talus, calcaneus, navicular, and cuboid bones in the adolescent surgically treated unilateral clubfoot and the contralateral normal foot.

The effect of training on the interpretation of 99Tcm-sestamibi myocardial perfusion SPET in patients with suspected coronary artery disease.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a period of concentrated training in nuclear cardiology on the accuracy of reporting 99Tcm-sestamibi (99Tcm-MIBI) single photon emission tomographic (SPET) images. Two visiting cardiologists, with no previous experience in nuclear cardiology, were asked to report blindly 60 99Tcm-MIBI SPET scans after 2 weeks of training in nuclear cardiology. One (observer 2) reported the same scans blindly after 2 months of further training. The results were compared with the assessment made by two experienced nuclear cardiologists and by using kappa statist

Utility of deep learning networks for the generation of artificial cardiac magnetic resonance images in congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning algorithms are increasingly used for automatic medical imaging analysis and cardiac chamber segmentation. Especially in congenital heart disease, obtaining a sufficient number of training images and data anonymity issues remain of concern. METHODS: Progressive generative adversarial networks (PG-GAN) were trained on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) frames from a nationwide prospective study to generate synthetic MRI frames. These synthetic frames were subsequently used to train segmentation networks (U-Net) and the quality of the synthetic training images, as

Phenotypic characterization of skeletal abnormalities of Osteopotentia mutant mice by micro-CT: a descriptive approach with emphasis on reconstruction techniques.

PURPOSE: The novel protein osteopotentia (Opt) has recently been described as an essential regulator of postnatal osteoblast maturation and might possibly be responsible for some of the rarer types of osteogenesis imperfecta. Our aim was the evaluation of micro CT for the qualitative morphological assessment of skeletal abnormalities of Osteopotentia-mutant mice in comparison to radiography and histology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four homozygous mice with insertional mutations in the Opt gene and three wild-type controls were examined ex vivo using radiography and micro-CT. Two of the homozygou

Value of true whole-body FDG-PET/CT scanning protocol in oncology: optimization of its use based on primary diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: No standardized field of view (FOV) currently exists for whole-body (WB) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Limited WB PET/CT FOV can exclude portions of the head, upper, and lower extremities, because there is little perceived clinical benefit to be gained from imaging these areas. PURPOSE: To determine how often utilizing WB PET/CT changes the clinical stage and management compared to each of the limited WB FOVs used for PET/CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 556 oncologic patients (804 PET/CT studies) who underwent staging or restag
