The influence of orthokeratology on peripheral refraction during accommodation.

SIGNIFICANCE: The change in peripheral refraction from hyperopic to myopic defocus following orthokeratology (OK) has been recognized as a main factor in myopia control. However, the impact of OK lenses on peripheral refraction at nearpoints in myopic eyes still requires further investigation. PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate changes in peripheral refraction during accommodation in myopic adults after orthokeratology (OK) wear. METHODS: Twenty-four selected myopic adults (mean spherical equivalent: -2.70 ± 1.04 D) participated in this study. Peripheral refractions were measured by an

Dynamic Accommodation Responses in Subjects Wearing Myopia Control Spectacles Modifying Peripheral Refraction.

PURPOSE: Peripheral optics have been suggested to play a role in myopia progression, with accommodation responses also considered a potential contributor. This study aimed to investigate whether modifications in peripheral optics through different spectacle lenses affect accommodation responses. METHODS: Dynamic accommodation responses were assessed using a double-pass instrument while switching the target from distance (3 m for 3 seconds) to near (0.22 m/4.5 D for adults, 0.18 m/5.5 D for children, 5 seconds) and then back to distance (3 m for 3 seconds). Three groups were studied. Group 1 i

Experimental Study of Refraction Effects of Nominally Plano Ophthalmic Prisms and Magnifying Lenses.

SIGNIFICANCE: Nominally plano ophthalmic prisms give autorefraction results similar to those predicted on the basis of how effective powers change with pantoscopic tilt, and magnifying lenses give autorefraction results similar to those predicted on the basis of vergence changes. Without appreciation of the optics involved, these effects might wrongly be considered artifacts. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the interactions of autorefractors with lenses and prisms. METHODS: There were 15 adult participants across three experiments, with a range of ages and refractions.

The influence of unilateral uncorrected astigmatism on binocular vision and fixation disparity.

PURPOSE: It is accepted practice to use a spherical equivalent power as an alternative contact lens correction for those patients with lower amounts of astigmatism, allowing for an easier fit, but the blur caused by one diopter of uncorrected astigmatism can reduce acuity of 6/6 to that of about 6/8. This is usually deemed acceptable monocularly, often retaining a good binocular acuity. The purpose of this study is to explore how monocular astigmatic blur may also affect the patient's binocular vision function. METHODS: A trial frame was outfitted with full correction for 20 healthy subjects

Sarfarazi dual optic accommodative intraocular lens.

The Sarfarazi accommodative intraocular lens, currently in clinical studies, is a single continuous silicon accommodative lens with dual optics and three haptics that mimic the action of the natural lens by using the contraction and relaxation of ciliary muscles. The lenses have been implanted in the eyes of patients. There have been no surgical or patient complications related to the lens, and its safety has been clearly demonstrated. Patient acceptance of the lens is excellent. Clinical enrollment will continue to expand.

Characteristics of pupil responses during far-to-near and near-to-far accommodation.

The static and dynamic aspects of the pupil response associated with various amplitudes of far-to-near (accommodation) and near-to-far (disaccommodation) focusing responses were evaluated in this study. Dynamic refractive and pupillary changes were measured simultaneously during focusing responses to targets at real distances in 12 young (23-26 years) emmetropic subjects. The targets were presented alternately at far (6 m) and at one of six near positions from 1 D (1 m) to 6 D (16.7 cm) in 1 D steps. The latency, magnitude and peak velocity of pupil changes associated with accommodation and di

Modelling the mechanics of accommodation and presbyopia.

Finite element methods have been used to compute the expected relationship between changes in ciliary body diameter and the change in refractive power implied by the change in geometry of the human ocular lens, using values for the material properties and initial geometry taken from the literature (notably the slit lamp photography of Brown (1973) and the studies by Fisher (1969) of the lens material properties). The results show that if the non-linearity associated with the changing geometry is taken into account the lens does not respond to ciliary body stretch by an increase in power [as re

Traumatic cycloplegia and myopic anisometropia.

The pathogenesis of myopia and the mechanism of atropine in preventing myopic progression have long been widely discussed. Recent studies with animals have pointed to the possible role of the muscarinic receptor of the retina itself in regulating eye growth. This paper stresses that, for myopia in humans, the importance of accommodation still holds. Twenty-five recovered cases of previous traumatic hyphema, occurring under age 16, were collected. For four or more years, the patients were examined for ocular refraction, axial length, intraocular pressure, gonioscopy and accommodation time; the

[Monocular near-point accommodation and the blood supply to the ciliary body of the amblyopic eye in schoolchildren with concomitant strabismus].

Visual acuity, the character of fixation, the angle of deviation, refraction, monocular determination of accommodation and blood supply of the ciliary body have been studied in 50 schoolchildren (100 eyes) with convergent strabismus and amblyopia of various degree. Children with amblyopia of high and moderate degrees have shown a sharp fall or absolute absence of the positive part of relative accommodation and reduced blood supply of the ciliary body. Between the mentioned indices and degree of amblyopia there exists a positive connexion.

Hypermetropia in accommodative esodeviation.

Contradicting earlier doctrine, several studies have indicated that hypermetropia in childhood increases over the first seven years of life, and decreases thereafter. No clear consensus exists as to these characteristics in patients with accommodative esodeviation. In 68 subjects (136 eyes), the mean annual change in hypermetropia up to the seventh birthday was an increase of +0.19 +/- 0.36 D. Subjects whose accommodative deviation deteriorated showed changes similar in magnitude. The corresponding mean annual change in a previously reported age-matched series unselected for strabismus was +0.

Binocular balance across spatial frequency in anisomyopia.

PURPOSE: Anisomyopia is prevalent in myopia and studies have reported it exhibits impaired binocular function. We investigated the binocular balance across spatial frequency in adults with anisomyopia and compared it to in individuals with less differences in refractive error, and examined whether ocular characteristics can predict binocular balance in anisomyopia. METHODS: Fifteen anisomyopes, 15 isomyopes and 12 emmetropes were recruited. Binocular balance was quantitatively measured at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 c/d. The first two groups of the observers were tested with and without optical correctio
