A 68 year-old male patient was hospitalized for radical prostatectomy. He had no abnormal medical history including neurological deficit before the operation. Prior to general anesthesia, an epidural catheter was inserted in the L3-4 interspace for intraoperative and postoperative analgesia. After surgery for nine hours, he developed confusion and flaccid paralysis of bilateral lower extremities occurred. No pathology was detected from cranial computed tomography and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging no pathology was detected. His thoracic/lumbar magnetic resonance imaging. Intraabdominal p

Abdominoscrotal hydrocele (ASH) is the rarest type of hydrocele. This condition is characterised by a large abdominal and scrotal component connected by an isthmus within the inguinal canal. The incidence among the paediatric population is reported to be less than 3%, although it might be underdiagnosed. Several theories have been proposed in the literature but the aetiology of ASH remains unknown. Diagnosis can be made clinically and confirmed by ultrasound. Spontaneous resolution is rare and long-standing ASH may lead to complications, thus early surgical intervention is recommended. Differe

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive adrenalectomy has become the gold standard for surgery of the suprarenal gland. Retroperitoneoscopic adrena … ectomy was performed. The inferior vena cava was intraoperatively injured. The high pressure in the retroperitoneal space prevented bleeding. The injury to the vena cava was treated using a continuous stitch without the necessity of conversion to open surgery. The patient was discharged on the third postoperative day without any other complications.
CONCLUSIONS: Retro …

A 15-year-old girl was found to be hypertensive (230-270/140-170 mm Hg) without any subjective symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the presence of a well-defined 22 mm hypodense lesion in the lower pole of the left kidney, located close to the renal hilum. Plasma rennin activity was elevated (75 ng/mL/h), and reninoma was diagnosed. Retroperitoneoscopy-assisted nephron-sparing surgery was planned. The retroperitoneum was accessed through a 4 cm left pararectal upper abdominal incision. Following blunt dissection, the abdominal wall was elevated with a lifting bar and lifting retract

After laparoscopic appendectomy complications and injury to the intraabdominal organs and major vessels are rare but well documented. The majority of complications occur during establishment of pneumoperitoneum. Frequently used entries are open trocar (Hasson), closed using Veress needle and direct trocar insertion. In this case we describe an incident where the towel clip, used to get hold of the supraumbilical fascia to minimize the risk of injury, was pressed down too hard. The retroperitoneum was accidentally punctured and a haematoma above vena cava was created.

OBJECTIVE: Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) occurs in 1 in 20 000 live births. A mortality rate of 30-40% is reported, generally relating to pulmonary hypoplasia, and 60% require renal replacement therapy (RRT) by 10 years. In the neonatal period, the large kidneys can cause significant mass effect, with the need for prolonged respiratory support and difficulty in establishing feeds. Early postnatal peritoneal dialysis (PD) is required in up to 25%, and dialysis efficiency can similarly be compromised. In these situations, unilateral or bilateral nephrectomy may be recomme

OBJECTIVE: To compare the results of transperitoneal laparoscopic vs retroperitoneoscopic simple nephrectomy for benign renal diseases in a prospective randomized design.
METHODS: In this study between January 2009 and August 2013, 31 patients underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy and 31 retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy after randomization. The 2 groups were compared for the visual pain score on the first and second postoperative days as the primary end point of the study. Complications were recorded and graded using Dindo-modified Clavien classification of surgical complications

A 27-year-old female patient with no previous medical history, presented a computed tomography displaying a calcified retroperitoneal cyst. The patient had experienced occasional abdominal pain in her right side. The tumour was found in the retroperitoneum, was non-adherent to neighbouring organs and was excised laparoscopically without postoperative complications. Histology revealed a benign, cystic mass, with calcification and osseous metaplasia in the cyst wall, and no epithelia. The material of the cyst was amorphic and necrotic. No other retroperitoneal masses alike has been described in

A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for detailed examinations and medical treatment against the right retroperitoneum tumor and liver lesions. Computed tomography showed a 20 cm diameter enhanced mass in the right perirenal space and multiple liver metastases. Pathological examination by needle biopsy revealed a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa). With weekly administration of a mTOR inhibitor, Temsirolimus, the tumor was reduced by about 20% one month later. The maximal response was stable disease due to RECIST v 1. 1. However, shortly after the minimal response, the di

We describe how we performed retroperitoneoscopic surgery for a 15.5-cm fibroepithelial polyp, which originated in the lowest portion of the right upper ureter, protruded intermittently into the bladder, and caused ureteral invagination. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the retroperitoneoscopic management of ureteral invagination caused by a long fibroepithelial polyp.

Abdominal lymphatic malformations may be challenging to eradicate. Retroperitoneal lesions may more difficult to resect than mesenteric ones; however, the latter may predispose to intestinal volvulus, leading to calls for their prompt excision. Such lesions identified perinatally may pose particular challenges: in one case, respiratory failure caused by abdominal distension required emergency drainage followed by later laparoscopic excision; laparoscopy has also been used promptly to diagnose and resect neonatal mesenteric lymphatic malformations with their inherent volvulus risk. We illustrat

The case of an early retroperitoneal abdominal pregnancy implanted on inferior vena cava successfully resected through laparoscopic surgery is reported here. A 28-year-old woman presented with vaginal spotting and amenorrhrea for 7(+5) weeks. Although a diagnosis of right cornual ectopic pregnancy by transvaginal ultrasound was made and a laparoscopic wedge resection of the left uterine cornus was performed, the beta-human chorionic gonadotropin level remained high. Abdominal ultrasonography and computerized tomography of the abdomen demonstrated a 3.4x2.6 cm sized hypervascular cystic mass al

We present a case series of patients who underwent simple perianal procedures outside this hospital but developed postoperative and life-threatening retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis. With a high index of clinical suspicion and radiological imaging, we were able to establish earlier diagnosis. Resuscitation, the use of intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics, aggressive surgical debridement and continuous organ support were essential in achieving a positive outcome in both of these patients.

Haemophiliac pseudotumors are usually observed in the diaphysis of long bones. Pseudotumors due to psoas muscle hematoma are rare and surgical management is difficult. Surgical treatment of these lesions is usually associated with high morbidity and mortality rate. Here, we present a case with iliopsoas haemophiliac pseudotumors with bowel fistulization who underwent three abdominal operations and survived. Based on our experiences in this patient, we recommend to wait for the intraabdominal hematoma and adhesions to resolve and organise, so that the dissection can be kept to a minimum, which

OBJECTIVES: Endolymphatic injection of several dyes have been previously studied to identify retroperitoneal lymphatic structure in animals and humans with malignant diseases. However, there have been no studies, to our knowledge, that demonstrate the utility of injecting patent blue dye into the testicular parenchyma to detect retroperitoneal lymphoid structure. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate whether intratesticular patent blue dye injection is feasible and is an accurate method for retroperitoneal lymph node mapping in rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty male albino W

Castleman's disease is a rare disorder characterized by proliferation of the lymphoid tissue. Castleman's disease affects both males and females, and may occur at any age. Little is known about how often Castleman's disease actually occurs, other than it is rare, or what causes the disease. The most frequent location of the disease is the mediastinum. The location of the disease in the retroperitoneum is rare and it is usually associated with the generalized form of the disease. We report a case of a 34-year old man with isolated retroperitoneum Castleman's disease of the hyaline-vascular type

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst (HC) continues to be endemic in the Mediterranean countries, such as Turkey. Living in a rural area is an important risk factor for the disease. HC is most commonly seen in the liver and lungs, but retroperitoneal hydatid cyst is very rare. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic findings and surgical treatment of this unusual lesion.
METHODS: Between 1979 and 2004, 14 cases with primary retroperitoneal hydatid cyst were treated surgically at our clinic.
RESULTS: Symptoms included flank pain in eight (57.1%) and palpable mass in six

INTRODUCTION: Nephrectomy for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) has been reported to have significant morbidity and mortality. Because of the large kidney size, laparoscopic nephrectomy is technically demanding and there have been only few reports on this subject. We describe our retroperitoneoscopic technique and review the literature.
METHODS: Retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy was performed in 2 patients. A four-port retroperitoneal access was used, after hilar control the kidney was freed and extracted.
RESULTS: The mean operative time was 155 min, the mean intraoperativ
