Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has revolutionized the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with gastrointestinal disorders. Its application in patients with liver disease and portal hypertension is increasing. Patients with chronic liver disease are at risk for development of portal hypertension sequale such as ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and gastroesophageal varices. Bleeding esophageal and gastric varices are among the most common causes of mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Thus, early detection and treatment improve the outcome in this population. EUS can improve

PURPOSE: To review the management of orbital lymphangiomas and to propose a new treatment for both macrocystic and microcystic lymphatic malformations of the orbit.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of all patients from the authors' practice from 2001 to the present who met the histopathologic and/or diagnostic imaging criteria for orbital lymphatic malformation was reviewed. Lymphatic malformation was diagnosed if there was a multilobulated pattern on CT or a cystic internal structure on ultrasonography. In patients that were treated, macrocysts (>1 cm) were treated with dual-drug chemoab

A young boy presented with a symptomatic aneurysmal bone cyst of the left great wing of the sphenoid bone. Arterial embolization had failed to produce thrombosis, and the lesion could not be resected surgically. Direct intraoperative sclerotherapy resulted in immediate thrombosis of 80% of the volume of the vascular malformation with no progression of symptoms. Two years later, the symptoms had completely resolved, and CT scans showed total ossification of the lesion.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Current guidelines recommend injection of cyanoacrylate as first-line therapy to prevent gastric variceal rebleeding. The method still poses a risk of ectopic embolism, which possibly correlates with the volume of cyanoacrylate used. In this trial, we evaluated the short-term efficacy and safety of tissue adhesive injection combined with lauromacrogol for treating gastric varices.
METHODS: Patients admitted to our hospital for variceal hemorrhage were enrolled and blindly randomized into two treatment groups: lauromacrogol group (lauromacrogol-cyanoacrylate-lauromacrogol)

BACKGROUND: Absolute ethanol sclerotherapy provides a reliable treatment for facial venous malformation, although facial nerve injury may occur after sclerotherapy. This study is a retrospective review of facial nerve dysfunction after sclerotherapy.
METHODS: A total of 91 patients with facial venous malformations accepted 288 ethanol sclerotherapy sessions. The facial nerve dysfunctions caused by the therapy were evaluated and analyzed.
RESULTS: There were 9 instances of facial nerve injury. For 18 sessions of sclerotherapy in the temporal region, 5.6% of patients experienced injury to the

OBJECTIVE: Congenital arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the maxillofacial region are rare, potentially life-threatening, vascular lesions. This study reviewed our experience with a multidisciplinary approach to treating maxillofacial AVMs in children.
STUDY DESIGN: Thirteen patients (10 boys and 3 girls) with AVMs involving the facial soft tissues or jaws were treated using a multidisciplinary approach that included: 1) superselective intra-arterial embolization (SIAE); 2) bone wax packing (BWP) of the bone cavity and curettage; and 3) compartmentalization and sclerotherapy.
RESULTS: The

Varicose veins (VVs) are associated with lifestyle-limiting symptoms and complications. Patients who fail compression therapy are candidates for more invasive treatments. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of endovenous foam sclerotherapy (EFS) for the treatment of VVs in a US academic center. We reviewed medical records of a consecutive cohort of patients who underwent EFS over a 2-year period. The primary outcome measure was obliteration of VVs. The secondary outcome measures were symptomatic improvement, ulcer healing, recurrence, and adverse events. A total of 166 patients (217 l

INTRODUCTION: Sclerotherapy offers an alternative to surgery for the treatment of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). The main objective of the present study was to assess the radiological efficacy of sclerotherapy in terms of ossification on MRI. Secondary objectives were to assess clinical efficacy on pain evaluation and to analyze recurrence and complications according to type of sclerosing agent and intraoperative imaging technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2006 and 2014, 19 patients (7 females, 12 males, aged 3 to 17 years) with ABC treated by sclerotherapy were included. Six received Ethi

Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) are associated with significant morbidity. Prompt clinical evaluation followed by aggressive treatment often results in successful palliation. Video-assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) today can be employed in the diagnosis and treatment of idiopatic and known MPE. Between January 1994 and December 1998 233 MPE patients were treated with pleurodesis. 206 of them underwent tube thoracostomy and drainage alone followed by chemical pleurodesis. In 27 out of the 233 cases VATS management was applied. These patients had undiagnosed pleural effusions or recurrent MPE fo

This paper reports the preliminary results of a prospective randomized trial comparing endoscopic variceal sclerosis and distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS) in the management of patients with cirrhosis and variceal bleeding. Seventy-one patients have been entered; 36 have received sclerosis and 35 DSRS. Randomization of the study population was stratified on Child's A/B (56%) and Child's C (44%). Sixty-one per cent had alcoholic and 39% non-alcoholic cirrhosis. No patients have been lost to follow-up, which currently stands at a median of 26 months. Rebleeding occurred significantly (p less than 0
