The reproductive response of collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) to photoperiod is unique for rodents. Whereas most reproductively photoresponsive rodents show maximal gonadal growth when exposed to long photoperiod (long day), collared lemmings show delayed maturation when born and maintained under this condition. OBJECTIVE: This investigation tested whether the timing of pubertal development was associated with concurrent and prior experiences of psychopathology (symptoms and disorders) in adolescent boys and girls.
METHOD: A large (N = 1,709) community sample of high school students were interviewed using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children as adapted for use in epidemiological studies. The incidence of gynaecomastia was evaluated in 954 healthy young men aged 18-26 years, and was correlated with several somatometric parameters (height, weight, testes size, eye colour, scalp hair colour, scalp hair density, acne, density and extent of body hair). This study examined the relations between verbal and performance IQs, time of pubertal onset and testosterone levels from 13 to 16 years of age in a sample of 30 males with a supernumerary X chromosome. The findings indicated that verbal IQs measured prior to puberty, during puberty and at mid-adolescence were strongly related to relatively early pubertal onset and testosterone levels. Performance IQs had little or no relationship with the same variables. The results are discussed in terms of several different psychobiological models.

This study examined the relationship between two prominent measures of egocentrism, Enright's Adolescent Egocentrism Scale (AES) and Elkind's Imaginary Audience Scale (IAS), in a sample of 458 adolescents, between 10 and 15 years old. Both correlational and factor analyses indicated that the two measures assess distinctly different phenomena. To characterize the spectrum of pulsatile gonadotropin secretion during the postmenarchal period, we studied 24 adolescents whose gynecological age was 1-4 yr. Six women with ovulatory cycles formed a control group. Eighteen women with anovulatory cycles were grouped on the basis of mean plasma LH values: group 1 (n = 8) with high LH values and group 2 (n = 10) with normal LH values. Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta Erxleben) present a unique syndrome of reversal in behavioral and anatomical distinction between the sexes: females are heavier and more aggressive than males and dominant over them. The female's external genitalia include a false scrotum and a fully erectile pseudopenis through which mating and birth take place. Results of studies of circulating testosterone levels in wild spotted hyenas do not account for the "male-like" characteristics of the female. We found elevations of plasma dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHAS) in five boys, 5.5 to 10.3 years of age (group A), with premature pubarche (pubic hair development) or acne as an isolated phenomenon.
