An evaluation of liquid-crystal thermometry as a screening device for intraoperative hyperthermia.

Disposable liquid-crystal temperature-trend indicators were evaluated under clinical conditions that simulated the development of intraoperative hyperthermia during anesthesia. Comparison was made to forehead thermistors for rapidity, accuracy, and linearity of response as well as correlation with esophageal and rectal thermistor recordings. The liquid-crystal monitors were comparable to the forehead thermistors in both rapidity and linearity or response, but not in accuracy. A linear correlation existed with the esophageal thermistor temperatures. Correlation with the rectal temperatures was

A new apparatus for hair regrowth in male-pattern baldness.

A newly devised apparatus (Scalp-Tension-Relaxer, STR) can efficiently promote hair regrowth in patients with male-pattern baldness. When this apparatus is applied, the scalp is pushed up to relieve tension on the vertex. The efficacy rate of hair regrowth in alopecia patients was 40%. An investigation into the basis for the hair regrowth caused by this apparatus was directed toward the changes in hemodynamics and skin temperature of the scalp. During and after use of this apparatus, subjects exhibited an increase both in the cutaneous blood flow rate (as determined by laser Doppler flowmetry)…

Passive microwave radiometry in biomedical studies.

Passive microwave radiometry (MWR) measures natural emissions in the range 1-10GHz from proteins, cells, organs and the whole human body. The intensity of intrinsic emission is determined by biochemical and biophysical processes. The nature of this process is still not very well known. Infrared thermography (IRT) can detect emission several microns deep (skin temperature), whereas MWR allows detection of thermal abnormalities down to several centimeters (internal or deep temperature). MWR is noninvasive and inexpensive. It requires neither fluorescent nor radioactive labels, nor ionizing or ot…

Infrared thermography to diagnose and manage venomous animal bites and stings.

INTRODUCTION: Infrared imaging (IR) is a noninvasive technique that quantifies body surface temperature, producing a digital color image. IR has been used to study diseases in which skin temperature can reflect the presence of inflammation. METHODS: This was an observational pilot study of eight patients envenomed by snakes, spiders, and scorpions. All patients were examined using a thermal camera. RESULTS: In all cases, we obtained infrared images that corroborated clinical findings indicating localized effects of venom, specifically inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: IR has potential for use as a…

Increased 18F-FDG Uptake in the Spleen and Multiple Lymph Nodes in Dengue Fever.

A 62-year-old man underwent a whole-body FDG PET/CT for annual cancer screening. By an interview, he had an epigastric pain, and his body temperature was 37.0°C on the day. He just came back home from a travel to Southeast Asia 1 week ago and had presented with chill, high fever (temperature, 39.6°C), arthralgia, myalgia, and skin rash a few days before. Dengue fever was diagnosed by detecting dengue virus type 1 genome and antibody to the virus accompanied by thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. PET/CT examination revealed increased FDG uptake in the spleen and multiple lymph nodes.

Lessons from the experimental stage of the two-step vacuum-microwave method for histoprocessing.

The two-step vacuum-microwave method simplifies and shortens histoprocessing. Acting margins are small so that fine-tuning is required. Temperature, vacuum and time should be in perfect balance. If not, a "cooking" effect (too high temperature) can easily be detected in the epidermis of skin biopsies. An adverse vacuum effect (when vacuum is obtained too abruptly) produces clefts, first observed where different tissues are contiguous. When time is set too shortly, impregnation will be insufficient, which is best seen in kidney tissue. The lessons from these observations may help future users t

Cost-effectiveness of temperature monitoring to help prevent foot ulcer recurrence in people with diabetes: A multicenter randomized controlled trial.

AIMS: Diabetes-related foot ulcers are common, costly, and frequently recur. Multiple interventions help prevent these ulcers. However, none of these have been prospectively investigated for cost-effectiveness. Our aim was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of at-home skin temperature monitoring to help prevent diabetes-related foot ulcer recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multicenter randomized controlled trial. We randomized 304 persons at high diabetes-related foot ulcer risk to either usual foot care plus daily at-home foot skin temperature monitoring (intervention) or usual care alone (c…

Effects of Maximal Eccentric Trunk Extensor Exercise on Lumbar Extramuscular Connective Tissue: A Matched-Pairs Ultrasound Study.

Recently, it has been shown that the extramuscular connective tissue (ECT) is likely involved in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of maximal trunk extension eccentric exercise (EE) on ECT thickness, self-reported DOMS, ECT stiffness, skin temperature, and possible correlations between these outcomes. Healthy adults (n = 16, 29.34 ± 9.87 years) performed fatiguing EE of the trunk. A group of highly active individuals (TR, n = 8, > 14 h of sport per week) was compared with a group of less active individuals (UTR, n = 8, …

Effect of spurt duration on the heat transfer dynamics during cryogen spray cooling.

Although cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is used to minimize the risk of epidermal damage during laser dermatologic surgery, optimization of the current cooling approach is needed to permit the safe use of higher light doses, which should improve the therapeutic outcome in many patients. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of spurt duration (delta t) on the heat transfer dynamics during CSC using a model skin phantom. A fast-response temperature sensor was constructed to record the changes in surface temperature during CSC. Temperature measurements as a function of delta t at two

Episodic hyperhidrosis on the dorsum of hands.

A 21-year-old man presented with a 6-year history of episodic localized hyperhidrosis on the back of his hands. Results of the neurologic examination were normal. Profuse sweating of the affected skin was elicited by exercise, raising core temperature, direct heat, and intradermal injections of cholinergic drugs. Examination of the affected skin by electron microscopy and light microscopy with special stains and enzyme methods revealed prominent hyperplasia of otherwise normal eccrine sweat glands and ducts and increased surrounding stromal hyaluronic acid.
