Almost one billion people worldwide are affected by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Affected individuals experience disordered breathing patterns during sleep, which results in fatigue, daytime drowsiness, and/or sleep deprivation. Working under the influence of these symptoms significantly impairs work productivity and leads to occupational accidents and errors. This impact is seen in healthcare workers (HCWs) who are not immune to these conditions. However, poorly controlled OSA in this subset of individuals takes a heavy toll on patient care due to the increased risk of medical errors and ca

Introduction: Little information exists in the general population whether clinical presentation phenotypes of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) differ in terms of sleep quality and comorbidities. Aim: The purpose of our study was to assess possible differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic OSA patients concerning syndrome's severity, patients' sleep quality, and comorbidities. Subjects and methods: First, in a nationwide, stratified, epidemiological survey, 4,118 Cypriot adult participants were interviewed about sleep habits and complaints. In the second stage of the survey, 264 randomly se

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and obstructive sleep apnea may have an increased cardiac risk due to nocturnal myocardial ischemia triggered by apnea-associated oxygen desaturation. Sleep structure in patients with obstructive sleep apnea is fragmented by activation of the central nervous system (CNS) (arousal) due to obstructive apneas. Nocturnal myocardial ischemia may lead to activation of the CNS as well.
PATIENTS: Fourteen patients with obstructive sleep apnea and CHD disease and seven patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea without CHD were studied.

PURPOSE: Frequency of apnea and hypopnea events is used to estimate the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, comprehensive information on whether apneas and hypopneas cause an equal biological effect is not available. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the effect of the breathing cessation event type (i.e., obstructive apnea or hypopnea) and duration on the severity of related SpO2 desaturation events.
METHODS: Type 1 polysomnographies of 395 patients (220 males and 175 females) examined for suspected OSA were analyzed. Desaturation severity related to hypopnea and

BACKGROUND: High prevalence and serious complications associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) urge the need for methods that support non-invasive examinations, diagnostic accuracy and pathophysiological insights of OSA. This study aims to develop a Synthetic MRI-based radiomics model for diagnosing and stratifying OSA severity, and to explore its pathophysiological basis through integrated histopathological-transcriptomic analyses.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study prospectively collected data at the tertiary hospital between July 2023 and October 2024. Individuals with and without OS

OBJECTIVE: Comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA) is a frequent but underrec-ognized condition in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). While OSA is strongly linked to hypertension, the independent contribution of COMISA to resistant hyper-tension (RH) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between COMISA and RH in hypertensive OSA patients and to identify independent predictors of RH.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 131 patients diagnosed with both OSA and hypertension who underwent full-night polysomnography (PSG) at a ter- tia

PURPOSE: To quantify the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and COVID-19 outcomes and test whether adherence to positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy modifies this relationship. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared groups with and without OSA, stratified by degrees of PAP adherence (February 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020) from an integrated healthcare system (Kaiser Permanente Southern California). Rates of COVID-19 infection and hospitalization were compared. Multivariable logistic regression estimated adjusted associations, controlling for demographic and clinical fac

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent among breast reconstruction patients, yet its impact on surgical outcomes remains inadequately characterized. This study assessed associations between OSA and postoperative complications, length of stay, and inpatient costs among patients undergoing breast reconstruction.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective population-based study using the National Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2022. Breast reconstruction hospitalizations were identified using ICD-10-PCS procedure codes, and OSA was identified using the ICD-10-CM diagnosis code G47.33.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is among the most prevalent chronic medical conditions in the United States and has long been associated with cardiac arrhythmias, most notably atrial fibrillation (AF). Recurrent apneic episodes and their associated negative thoracic pressure swings produce acute fluctuations in autonomic signaling, generating spikes in parasympathetic and sympathetic activity that may promote AF by altering refractoriness, conduction velocity, and atrial filling. Over longer periods of time, intermittent hypoxia, inflammation, and mechanical stresses on the atrium contribute to

BACKGROUND: Long-COVID (LC) is defined as the persistence of symptoms 12 weeks after the acute COVID infection not explained by any other alternative diagnosis. Its pathophysiology is poorly understood. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) shares several clinical manifestations with LC, such as fatigue and low-quality sleep, however, thus far, their potential coexistence has been poorly addressed.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of OSA in patients with LC.
METHODS: Observational, prospective study. Patients with LC were recruited from a dedicated ambulatory hospital clinic. All patients un

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a major public health crisis affecting nearly one billion people worldwide and is associated with significant cardiovascular and metabolic complications. The prevalence of OSA is rising steadily due to the obesity pandemic and is contributed by interacting anatomical, inflammatory, and neuro-respiratory mechanisms. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains the gold standard for the management of OSA; however, it does not address underlying obesity or weight-independent pathophysiology. Obesity is an important modifiable risk factor for OSA, as weight l

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a well-established risk factor for various cardiovascular and neurological conditions. Increasing evidence suggests that OSA is also associated with a wide spectrum of ocular conditions, affecting nearly all anatomical structures of the eye, from the eyelids and ocular surface to the retina and optic nerve. These associations are largely driven by intermittent hypoxia, oxidative stress, inflammation, and vascular dysregulation. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on ocular conditions associated with obstructive sleep apnea, focusing on common unde

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) constitutes a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway collapse during sleep. This condition is prevalent among patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances and represents a potent independent risk factor for arrhythmia. Although most studies have concentrated on the association between OSA and atrial fibrillation (AF), numerous investigations have established connections with ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmogenesis in OSA represents a complex multifactorial phenomenon. Acute mechanisms involve induction of negative intrathoraci
