In recent years the effectiveness of hypnotic drugs has had to be assessed in terms of a greatly increased knowledge of the physiology and pathology of sleep. The normal pattern of sleep and wakefulness involves a cyclic alternation between three rather than two basically dissimilar states of the brain and body - alert wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. The pattern of this alternation in individual people results from the interaction of many influences - biological (including genetic, early developmental and later degenerative influences), psyc

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper describes a newly proposed sleep disorder, trauma-associated sleep disorder (TSD). Whether or not this represents a truly unique condition is controversial. In this paper, we describe the overlapping features and differences between TSD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD).
RECENT FINDINGS: While REM sleep without atonia (RWA) and dream enactment are part of the diagnostic criteria for both RBD and TSD, only TSD features nightmares that occur both in non-REM and REM. A key difference between TSD and PTS

UNLABELLED: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability in young people in the United States. Disorders of arousal and attention are common in closed head injury (CHI). Daytime drowsiness impairs participation in rehabilitation, whereas nighttime wakefulness leads to falls and behavioral disturbances. Sleep disturbances in TBI reported in the literature have included excessive daytime somnolence, sleep phase cycle disturbance, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea. Although well known to the clinician treating these patients, the extent and prevalence of disrupted sleep in patients in

The features of sleep parameters in the Rett syndrome were compared with those in early infantile autism (EIA) and hereditary progressive dystonia with marked diurnal fluctuation (HPD). The sleep-wakefulness cycle and the tonic and phasic components of sleep were evaluated in each disorder, the former was estimated by the day-by-day plot method and the latter two by polysomnography (PSG) following our method. Abnormalities of the sleep-wakefulness cycle were observed in the Rett syndrome and EIA, but in the latter these abnormalities became inapparent with age and improved markedly by correcti

Hypothalamic orexin (hypocretin, HCRT) deficiency causes sleep disorder narcolepsy with cataplexy in humans and murine. As another integral group of sleep/wake-regulating neurons in the same brain area, the melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons' involvement in cataplexy remains ambiguous. Here we used the live animal deep-brain calcium (Ca2+) imaging tool to record MCH neuron dynamics during cataplexy by expressing calcium sensor GCaMP6s into genetically defined MCH neurons in orexin knock-out mice, which are a model of human narcolepsy. Similar to wild-type mice, MCH neurons of the narc

An association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and sleep disorder has been reported. However, the magnitude of this association remains poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to systematically evaluate this relationship. We conducted a comprehensive search for observational studies in eight databases from their inception to February 28, 2025. The characteristics of each study and pooled risk ratio (RR) with corresponding confidence intervals were calculated. Subgroup analyses were performed to explore sources of heterogeneity. A total of eighteen studies involving 110,417 partic

Catatonia is a transdiagnostic syndrome that remains insufficiently recognized despite its clinical impact. Although sleep disturbances are well documented in mood and psychotic disorders, their association with catatonia has only rarely been described. This study aimed to map the available evidence on objective sleep alterations in patients with catatonia, complemented by an illustrative clinical case. A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Electronic databases were searched in July 2026 for studies reporting objective overnigh

Multiple types of sleep disorders are encountered in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and are often underreported and underdiagnosed. They include circadian disorders, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, rapid-eye-movement-sleep behavioral disorder, restless legs syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea. The prevalence of sleep problems increases early in the disease course, and sleep quality deteriorates overall as patients age and the disease progresses. At advanced stages of PD, there is a reciprocal link between sleep problems and PD manifestations: sleep problems tend to exacerbate

Sleep disorders are common in people with Parkinson's disease. These disorders, which increase in frequency throughout the course of the neurodegenerative disease and impair quality of life, include insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, circadian disorders, obstructive sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder. The causes of these sleep disorders are complex and multifactorial, including the degeneration of the neural structures that modulate sleep, the detrimental effect of some medications on sleep, the parkinsonian symptoms that interfere

INTRODUCTION: Sleep is crucial for physical and psychological health, and disturbances are closely linked to psychiatric disorders, making their management essential for improving treatment outcomes and preventing relapse. Although sleep disturbances are implicated in psychopathology of eating disorders, its role in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains unclear. This review aimed to characterise sleep in AN.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four scientific databases, including papers from inception to 25 May 2024. A machine learning algorithm (ASReview) was utilised to screen titles and

The effects of tinnitus on human health are receiving increasing attention, and it is currently believed that the central compensatory response caused by peripheral hearing loss is the main pathogenesis of chronic tinnitus. Tinnitus, psychological problems and sleep disorders affect and worsen each other, and should be taken seriously in treatment strategies. Chronic tinnitus treatment strategy advocates comprehensive treatment based on sound therapy, including reducing tinnitus sound perception and improving patients' negative mood and poor sleep. Whether treating tinnitus alone or treating r

CONTEXT: Lung cancer patients experience higher levels of sleep disturbances compared to other cancer patients, and this leads to greater distress, poorer function, and lower quality of life. Nonpharmacologic interventions have demonstrated improvements in the context of breast cancer, but their efficacy in the lung cancer population is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to determine the effects of any nonpharmacologic intervention on sleep quality of lung cancer patients.
METHODS: Intervention studies of any design that reported primary or secondary outcomes on sleep quality we

Sleep and epilepsy have a close relationship. About 20% of patients suffer seizures only during the night, approximately 40% only during the day and approximately 35% during the day and night. In certain epilepsy syndromes, the occurrence of seizures is strongly related to sleep or awakening. Infantile spasms appear predominately on awakening, and hypsarrhythmia is sometimes visible only in sleep. Children with Panayiotopoulos syndrome or benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) have seizures mostly when asleep, and in both syndromes interictal spike waves are markedly accentuated in

In a cross-sectional study among 953 young Danish men (2008-2011), Jensen et al. reported that sleep disturbances showed inverse U-shaped associations with semen parameters and testis size (Am J Epidemiol. 2013;177(10):1027-1037). Sleep disturbances were associated with several factors likely to affect semen parameters (such as history of sexually transmitted infections) that cannot all be efficiently controlled for, leaving room for residual confounding. Future studies could adopt a longitudinal design and rely on objective personal measures of sleep quality and duration using accelerometers.

Movement disorders encompass a wide variety of neurological problems, and each has its own constellation of cognitive, motor and sleep problems. Those problems may be secondary to the disease process, the treatments for the disease or both. One of the most commonly seen of these disorders is Parkinson's disease. This article will discuss the sleep issues commonly associated with that disorder, and will present suggestions for treatment.

Approximately 74-94% patients with Parkinson's disease have sleep disorders: such as frequent awakening, excessive daytime sleepiness, nightmares, nocturnal cramps, REM sleep behavior disorders and so on. In contrast, the relationship between physiological mechanism of sleep and the dopamine systems are still obscure, because the dopamine systems are not directly related neither initiating or maintaining sleep system nor awaking system. However, most of all the dopaminergic drugs were reported to induce sleepiness or sleep attacks in the patients with Parkinson's disease. So, physicians must i

Sleep disorders occur in 74-98% of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD), adversely affecting their quality of life. Sleep disruption takes the form of sleep fragmentation with frequent and prolonged awakenings and daytime sleepiness. Nocturia, difficulty in turning over in bed, painful leg cramps, vivid dreams/nightmares, back pain, limb/facial dystonia and leg jerks are the main causes of nocturnal awakening in PD patients. Sleep disturbance gradually worsens with disease progression, suggesting that it is related to the severity of the disease. Sleep disturbances may be generall
