Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is an uncommon benign salivary gland neoplasm that includes isomorphic basaloid cells. We report on a female patient with BCA that developed in the right parotid gland in her 50s. The present patient demonstrated a few tumor nests in the fibrous capsule, and her tumor was larger than usual. These facts made us suspect of malignancy. Histopathologically, the tumor was characterized by multiple duct-like structures and tubular-trabecular masses composed of small isomorphic cells with hyperchromatic, round nuclei and an eosinophilic cytoplasm. It was difficult to determin

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal tumor with an unpredictable natural history. We present the first reported case of PEComa of the vagina diagnosed in an 8-year-old girl. This was initially diagnosed on biopsy as an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and the patient underwent 3 cycles of chemotherapy according to the Mesenchymal Malignant Tumour 1989 protocol. A repeat scan, however, revealed an increase in tumor size. Total resection was achieved via a transvaginal (vertical sleeve) partial vaginectomy. The resected tumor had the typical appearance of a PEComa. Immun

Rare Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)+ smooth muscle tumours (SMT) manifest typically under immunosuppression. Three major subtypes are known: human immunodeficiency virus-associated (HIV-SMT), after transplantation (PTSMT) or associated with congenital immunodeficiency syndromes (CI-SMT). So far, there are no analyses which compare the clinico-pathological characteristics of all three subtypes. Case reports and case series on these three tumour types were collected (1990-2012). Meta-data analysis was performed for identification of similarities and differences. A total of 73 HIV-SMT, 66 PTSMT and 9 C

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastric glomus tumor (GGT) is a rare submucosal mesenchymal tumor that is typically benign. However, GGT recurrence or metastasis has been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old man was referred to our hospital for gastric submucosal tumor (SMT) examination. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a 15 mm SMT in the anterior wall of the gastric antrum. Endoscopic ultrasonography demonstrated a hypoechoic solid mass that invaded the proper muscle layer. In contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT), the anterior wall of the gastric antrum was thickened. O

Heterotopic ossification is a benign, ectopic bone growth that develops in muscle and other soft tissue. The exact cause is poorly understood, but it is a rarely serious complication of soft tissue trauma. Its most common form, myositis ossifications traumatica, occurs as a secondary complication of direct muscle injury. However, other forms are less common and can result from specific pathologic conditions, such as spinal cord trauma and metabolic disorders. In patients who have had spinal cord injury and subsequent paraplegia, heterotopic ossification often results in ankylosis of the hip an

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma is a rare variant of leiomyoma and has only been reported a few times in the literature. As a result of its alarming gross and radiologic appearance, it must be differentiated from other malignant smooth muscle tumors. We report a case of cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma in an African American premenopausal woman with a medical history of anemia, abnormal uterine bleeding, and a cervical mass. A total hysterectomy was performed on the patient. On pathological examination, the gross and microscopic appearance of the tumor was consistent with that described in …

Leiomyomas are common benign tumors of the uterus, affecting 20-30% of women of reproductive age group. But vaginal leiomyomas remain an uncommon entity with only about 300 reported cases. The first case was described in 1733. Only a few cases have been reported in Nepal to date. Tumors are thought to arise from Mullerian smooth muscle cells in the sub-epithelium of the vagina. Vaginal leiomyomas are usually situated in the anterior vaginal wall. Here, we report a case of a 48-year old multipara who presented the outpatient department with the ultrasonographic report showing multiple uterine f

Choristomas of the internal auditory meatus are exceedingly rare tumors. In most cases, neuromuscular choristomas have initially been misdiagnosed as vestibular schwannomas (VS). No known characteristics in the clinical presentation or in imaging exist distinguishing these tumors from VS, which are the most common tumors at this location [Smith et al.: AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 1997;18:327-329]. We present a case of a neuromuscular choristoma of the 8th cranial nerve that was operated because of growth demonstrated on two MRI scans 3 months apart. We were convinced that this young patient would re

Glomus tumors are rare, benign neoplasms arising from glomus bodies, primarily located in the subungual region and upper extremities, but uncommonly reported in areas such as the scrotum. Here, we describe a unique case of a glomus tumor of the scrotal skin in a 28-year-old male presenting with a two-year history of a painful, gradually enlarging scrotal nodule. Clinical examination revealed a tender oblong nodule, and dermoscopy suggested a benign neoplasm. Imaging and initial biopsy confirmed the lesion as a possible glomus tumor. Remarkably, during biopsy, the tumor spontaneously and comple

Objective This study was performed to discuss the characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of primary prostatic extragastrointestinal stromal tumor (EGIST). Methods The case history data of a patient with an EGIST were analyzed and discussed with a literature review. Results The patient was diagnosed with a pelvic tumor, possibly malignant. We ascertained the diagnosis by exploratory surgery and pathological biopsy. The tumor was present in the prostate and infiltrated and pressed against the anterior rectal wall. Pathological biopsy showed that the tumor comprised spindle cells, which were a

The case of a 66-year-old Thai woman who was treated at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital due to recurrent epistaxis for two years is presented. Her physical examination revealed a 0.7-cm tumor mass on the right nasal septum. A biopsy was subsequently done and the tissue was sent for pathological examination. The lesion was then diagnosed as "glomus tumor of the nasal septum". Histologically, the tumor was rather well-circumscribed and located in the submucosal region. The neoplastic cells were uniform, round to ovoid in shape and contained bland-looking, finely chromatic nuclei and moderat

BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that the newly synthesized curcuminoids B2BrBC and C66 supplementation will overcome hyperoxia-induced tracheal hyperreactivity and impairment of relaxation of tracheal smooth muscle (TSM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rat pups (P5) were exposed to hyperoxia (>95% O2 ) or normoxia for 7 days. At P12, tracheal cylinders were used to study in vitro contractile responses induced by methacholine (10-8 -10-4 M) or relaxation induced by electrical field stimulation (5-60 V) in the presence/absence of B2BrBC or C66, or to study the direct relaxa

The uterus is susceptible to benign tumors known as fibroids, which have been associated with many pregnancy complications, including preterm labor. However, the impact of fibrotic tissue remodeling on the physiology of the myometrium, the smooth muscle layer of the uterus, is poorly understood, in large part due to a lack of model systems. In this study, we engineered healthy-like and fibrotic-like myometrium by culturing human myometrial smooth muscle cells on polyacrylamide hydrogels micropatterned with fibronectin to independently tune matrix rigidity and tissue alignment, respectively. We

Progressive lung tissue destruction in lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) occurs as a result of excessive proliferation of LAM cells caused by a mutation in one of the tuberous sclerosis complex suppressor genes, TSC1 or TSC2. These cells show constitutive activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway and many of the mTOR-related kinases such as Akt, Erk, S6K1 and S6. Phenotype of LAM cells differs considerably depending on their microenvironment. LAM cells show differences in morphology, size and expression of various factors depending on their location in the tumor or body fluid

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), the specific KIT-positive mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, have been sporadically reported in the rectum, but there are few clinicopathologic series. In this study we analyzed the clinicopathologic features of 133 anorectal GISTs, 3 intramural leiomyomas (LMs), and 8 leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the Haartman Institute of the University of Helsinki. Ninety-six GISTs were documented as KIT-positive and three additional ones as CD34-positive. Thirty-four tumors were included by their

Renal-pelvic fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are rare benign mesodermal lesions that can radiologically and clinically mimic urothelial carcinoma, sometimes prompting radical surgery. We reviewed five consultation cases of renal pelvis or proximal-ureter FEPs, integrating histology, immunohistochemistry, and targeted molecular testing. Patients were all females, tumors measured 3.3-9.0 cm (mean 5.2 cm), and four arose in the renal pelvis with variable ureteral extension. Three patients underwent nephroureterectomy for presumed malignancy. Histologically lesions shared a polypoid architecture wit

Primary hepatic leiomyoma is a neoplasm of mesenchymal origin and occurs only rarely. Secondary to benign smooth muscle proliferation, it is usually found in adult women and is associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Here, we report the 29(th) case of primary hepatic leiomyoma with its unique features related to diagnosis, treatment and developmental biology. A 48-year-old man, with an immunocompromised status, complained of pain in the upper quadrant of the abdomen. Serological analysis indicated no presence of hepatitis virus, no human immunodeficiency virus, and no EBV infection

Kupffer cells are major matrix metalloproteinase-producing cells in the liver. The production of metalloproteinases in Kupffer cells may contribute to the improvement of liver fibrosis inducing liver cirrhosis. In this study, we examined the effect of the OK-432 (a biological response modifier) on the dimethylnitrosamine-induced liver cirrhosis in rats. Dimethylnitrosamine (10 microg/ml) was injected intraperitoneally into 20 male Wistar rats 3x/week for 4 weeks. For the subsequent 4 weeks, the animals were injected with saline (1 ml, 1x/week) (Group I, n=10) or OK-432 (1 Klinishe Einheit, 1x/

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a case presented as osteolytic lesions involving 2 inconsecutive lumbar, which was pathologically proved to be of smooth muscular origin.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) could be diagnosed when the neoplasm showed some malignant behavior, whereas its histologic image revealed very low malignance. A 47-year-old woman presented with low back pain and numbness of the left lower extremity attributable to osteolytic lesions in the second and fourth lumbar vertebral bodies, which was subseque…

Axillary lymph vessels of 94 autopsy cases (42 female, 52 male) have been investigated histologically in serial slices. Total diameter of the lymph vessels, vascular wall diameter, diameter of the medial connective tissue, finally that one of the artificial tissue spaces were measured in almost 8000 single measurements. The mean values of counts for the different vascular wall components were assessed statistically with the aid of a computer. By reason of the enormous individual variation of the number and the size in lymph vessel system a direct comparison of the measurement data from the dif
