Subjective social status and rumination in relation to anxiety and depressive symptoms and psychopathology among economically disadvantaged Latinos in primary care.

The present investigation examined the interactive effects of subjective social status and rumination in relation to anxiety/depressive symptoms and psychopathology among 276 Latinos (82% female; Mage = 39.2, SD = 11.1; 97.0% reported Spanish as first language) who attended a community-based primary health care clinic. Results indicated that the interaction between rumination and subjective social status was significantly associated with depression (B = -.04, t = -3.52, p < .001, 95% CI [-.06, -.02]), social anxiety (B = -.01, t = -3.84, p < .001, 95% CI [-.02, -.01]), and the number of mood a

Identifying speech, language and communication needs among children and young people in residential care.

BACKGROUND: There are claims that elevated levels of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) exist among looked-after children and young people, and that their needs remain largely undetected and unmet. Scarce empirical evidence exists to support these assertions. AIMS: To investigate whether elevated levels of communication impairment exist among children and young people in residential care; to begin to explore the nature of any communication impairment indicated, including social and pragmatic difficulties; to consider the extent to which communication impairment may be undetected

Cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome with long-term features of autism spectrum disorder: evidence in a 9-year-old girl after vermian medulloblastoma surgery.

The time course of socio-communicative disturbances in children after posterior fossa tumor resection is variable in clinical reports, and its assessment may help to understand the role of the cerebellum in the pathogenesis of socio-communicative disorders and improve rehabilitation plans. We report the 3-year cognitive-behavioral follow-up of a female patient (LZ) who underwent surgical ablation of the vermis due to medulloblastoma at age 9. LZ developed a severe post-operative Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS) with cognitive-executive dysfunctions and behavioral alterations rese

Selective Mutism and Comorbidity with Specific Learning Disorders: Evaluation and Multimodal Intervention in a Clinical Case of a Female Child from 7 to 11 Years of Age.

Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by a child's persistent inability to communicate verbally in some or all contexts of social life. It is often associated with other cognitive-affective disorders. Performing cognitive-behavioral assessments and psychological interventions can be challenging due to the difficulty in administering standardized neuropsychological tests and involving family and teachers in the intervention program. In a single case study, a young Filipina girl with SM underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and received multimodal t

Environmental Enrichment Exerts a Selective, Stage-Dependent Modulation on the Autism-like Behavioral Phenotype Induced by Embryonic Valproic Acid in Zebrafish.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in communication, socialization, and restricted behavioral patterns. Valproic acid (VPA) is a teratogen that, through epigenetic mechanisms, induces ASD-like phenotypes in animal models. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) represents an ideal model for evaluating these alterations due to its complex behavioral repertoire. This study analyzed the longitudinal effect of an enriched environment (EE) on VPA-induced behavioral alterations in juvenile and adult stages (n = 72; n = 18 per group: CTRL-SE, CTRL-EE, VPA-SE, and VPA-EE). Subjects were e

[Autism - Phenotypic variability].

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a neurobiological basis, affecting 1 in 31 people, with a male predominance (3.8 to 1). Characterized by deficits in social cognition and communication, restricted interests, and stereotyped behaviors, along with sensory processing difficulties, this condition accompanies individuals throughout their lives, with variations in its progression. According to support needs, it is divided into levels 1 (mild), 2 (moderate), and 3 (severe). While the classification is clear, it does not include clinical subtypes related to the presence of neurodevelopment

CHD8 dysregulation in neurodevelopment: Emerging insights into autism pathophysiology.

Autism is considered a multifaceted neurodevelopmental condition, marked by impairments in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours. Recent genetic research has highlighted mutations in the CHD8 (Chromodomain Helicase DNA-binding Protein 8) gene as one of the most significant risk factors associated with ASD. CHD8 encodes a chromatin remodeler protein that regulates gene expression by altering chromatin accessibility. This review aims to comprehensively review current findings on CHD8 mutations, with a focus on the gene's role in brain development, synaptic function, and AS

Disruption of major Ptchd1 isoforms causes autistic traits in social behavior and communication.

PTCHD1 is an X-linked three-exon gene associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or intellectual disability (ID). Mice lacking Ptchd1 exon 2 (Ptchd1Δexon2) exhibit hyperactivity and learning impairments, but do not recapitulate ASD-like traits. Through mapping of clinically reported loss-of-function mutations in human patients, we determined that PTCHD1 exon 3 is a high-risk locus. We therefore generated an alternative Ptchd1 knockout mouse model by targeting Ptchd1 exon 3 (Ptchd1Δexon3) using CRISPR/Cas9. Our analyses revealed that two major PTCHD1/Ptchd1 transcripts-a (full-length) a

Does broad autism phenotype traits affect mother-child interaction?: a cross-sectional study from Turkey.

OBJECTIVES: Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP) is defined as personality, social, and language features that parallel the defining behavioral characteristics of autism spectrum disorder, including social deficits, communication abnormalities, and stereotyped repetitive behavior. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of maternal BAP characteristics on the dynamic interaction between mothers and their children. METHODS: Children aged 12-60 months who were referred to the Infant Mental Health Unit of our outpatient clinic were analyzed. Forty-one children who were diagnosed with autism

Speech-in-noise perception in autistic adolescents with and without early language delay.

Speech-in-noise perception seems aberrant in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Potential aggravating factors are the level of linguistic skills and impairments in auditory temporal processing. Here, we investigated autistic adolescents with and without language delay as compared to non-autistic peers, and we assessed speech perception in steady-state noise, temporally modulated noise, and concurrent speech. We found that autistic adolescents with intact language capabilities and not those with language delay performed worse than NT peers on words-in-stationary-noise perception.

Glutamate synapses in human cognitive disorders.

Accumulating data, including those from large genetic association studies, indicate that alterations in glutamatergic synapse structure and function represent a common underlying pathology in many symptomatically distinct cognitive disorders. In this review, we discuss evidence from human genetic studies and data from animal models supporting a role for aberrant glutamatergic synapse function in the etiology of intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and schizophrenia (SCZ), neurodevelopmental disorders that comprise a significant proportion of human cognitive disease and

Factor structure evaluation of the childhood autism rating scale.

This study investigated the factor structure of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Principal components analysis (PCA) and principal axis factor analysis (PAF) evaluated archival data from children presenting to a university clinic with suspected autism spectrum disorders (ASDs; N = 164). PCA did not replicate components identified by DiLalla and Rogers (1994, Domains of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale: Relevance for diagnosis and treatment. Challenges of diagnosis in fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the adult.

Adults with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and the subsets of individuals with attenuated phenotype subsumed under the umbrella term of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) provide clinicians with a challenge. Compounding this, FASD is different from most genetic syndromes since a specific diagnostic biological test is not available. The diagnosis first needs to be suspected and confirmation requires a diagnostic assessment that is best carried out in the context of a multi-disciplinary team approach. There is surprisingly little research published on the prevalence, natural history, medical,

Two Studies on the Role of Appearance Concerns in Social Anxiety and Depression.

Appearance concerns are a core feature of multiple psychiatric disorders, including body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders; however, some have argued that they may also play a key role in social anxiety and depression. The present study sought to determine whether reductions in appearance concerns explain reductions in social anxiety and depression in two separate studies. Two studies examined the effects of fading appearance-related safety behaviors (ARSB; i.e., behaviors meant to avoid or reduce a perceived feared outcome related to appearance) experimentally (Study 1) or in a treatme

Patient and physician perceptions of the burden of tardive dyskinesia: an international survey.

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) negatively affects overall quality of life (QoL) and day-to-day activities, and perceptions of these effects and their impact may vary between cultures and societies, or providers and patients. Physicians' discernments of this burden could improve efforts to detect, diagnose and treat TD. This study assessed TD impact from both patients' and physicians' perspectives in multiple countries. METHODS: Patients who self-reported a physician diagnosis of TD and schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder exhibiting 'extr

The nature of the risk faced by pedestrians with neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review.

Pedestrians represent one of the most vulnerable road user groups worldwide. Children and adult pedestrians with neurodevelopmental disorders may be at greater risk due to deficits in a range of domains, such as attention, social communication, motor control and executive function. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (American Psychological Association, 2013), neurodevelopmental disorders include individuals with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific Learning Disorder, Motor Difficulties, C

Transition clinic for neurodevelopmental disorders: preliminary findings from an interdisciplinary model for adolescence to adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are childhood-onset conditions that often persist into adulthood and are associated with substantial functional impairment and complex psychiatric comorbidities. However, the transition from child and adolescent to adult mental health services often remains fragmented, contributing to delayed recognition and unmet clinical needs. This study aimed to describe an interdisciplinary transition clinic model for individuals with NDDs and to present preliminary findings regarding diagnostic outcomes and clinical characteristics. METHODS: This study w

Models of Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome reveal genotype-phenotype correlations in brain structure and behavior.

Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome (BBSOAS) is a rare, autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic variants in NR2F1, characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, optic nerve anomalies and autism spectrum disorder. Most pathogenic variants cluster within the highly conserved DNA-binding domain (DBD) or ligand-binding domain (LBD) of NR2F1 and are associated with variable clinical severity, suggesting a genotype-phenotype correlation. Although previous mouse models have provided important insights, comprehensive behavioral characterization rem
