The treatment of social phobia in general practice. is exposure therapy feasible?

BACKGROUND: Exposure therapy is an effective treatment for generalized social phobia. Most patients with social phobia are treated in primary care, but family doctors are not usually trained to perform exposure therapy. We have conducted a study in primary care of the effect of exposure therapy alone or in combination with sertraline on generalized social phobia. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to describe the training of GPs and the application of the treatment programme in general practice. METHOD: Forty-five GPs were trained for approximately 30 h in assessing patients with soc

[Applications for disability benefits before and after the 1991 restrictions].

In 1991, the eligibility criteria for disability benefits were restricted in Norway. Some effects are described in the present evaluation. Based on documents, first time applicants in 1990 and in 1993 in two counties were analysed according to social and medical variables. "Social security careers" before application are described, and proposals from physicians and the local social security office are compared with the decisions made by the county social security administration. Over a three-month period, applications decreased from 2.2 per 1,000 inhabitants in 1990 to 1.4 in 1993, a 39% decre

The association between mothers' and daughters' positive affect is moderated by child cardiac vagal regulation.

INTRODUCTION: Extensive research has supported the importance of children's positive affect in fostering prosperous psychosocial adjustment. Children's positive affect is believed to be significantly shaped by their environment in general and their caregivers' positive affect in particular. The current study investigates the role of child cardiac vagal regulation, a psychophysiological marker for social engagement, in shaping the association between maternal positive affect and child positive affect. METHODS: Mothers and daughters (ndyads  = 28) participated in two experimental conditions. In

Social Determinants of Health and Multimorbidity Among Adults 50 Years and Older in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Living with two or more chronic conditions simultaneously-known as multimorbidity-has become increasingly prevalent as the aging population continues to grow. However, the factors that influence the development of multimorbidity are still not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of multimorbidity among U.S. adults 50 years and older and identify associated factors with multimorbidity. METHODS: We used data from four cycles from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2018) to examine the associations between

Older adults' attitudes toward using Euthanasia at the end-of life: cancer vs. Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of studies that compare older adults' attitudes toward Euthanasia in two different terminal illnesses. Moreover, these studies did not relate to potentially influencing psycho-social factors. The current study aimed to examine the impact of a diverse range of variables on attitudes among older adults toward Euthanasia in two medical conditions: cancer and Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A total of 501 individuals aged 75 and above participated in the study. Attitudes toward Euthanasia were measured using vignettes which described two conditions: an 80-year-old man

Health-seeking behaviour in adults with musculoskeletal conditions: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis and low back pain, are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Individuals often delay or avoid seeking healthcare due to personal, social, and systemic factors. Existing research on health-seeking behaviour is fragmented and lacks synthesis across diverse contexts and populations. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review systematically maps the literature on health-seeking behaviour in adults with musculoskeletal conditions, highlighting knowledge gaps and generating insights for future research, clinical practice, and policy. Uncoupling memory impairments from autism-associated behaviors in Chd2 deficient mice.

Mutations in the chromatin remodeler, CHD2, are strongly associated with moderate to severe intellectual disability, autism and epilepsy, but the direct contribution of CHD2 mutations to clinical phenotypes is poorly understood. We report developmental and sex-specific behavioral changes in mice carrying a heterozygous mutation in Chd2. Notably, Chd2 mutants display a range of abnormal behaviors including impairments in multiple forms of memory and social interaction. Memory impairments and memory-relevant transcriptional changes observed in Chd2+/- mice are largely recapitulated in both sexes

Dyad averaged BMI-dependent interbrain synchrony during continuous mutual prediction in social coordination.

Obesity is linked to notable psychological risks, particularly in social interactions where individuals with high body mass index (BMI) often encounter stigmatization and difficulties in forming and maintaining social connections. Although awareness of these issues is growing, there is a lack of research on real-time, dynamic interactions involving dyads with various BMI levels. To address this gap, our study employed a joint finger-tapping task, where participant dyads engaged in coordinated activity while their brain activity was monitored using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Threat context impairs cognitive control of neutral words processing in social anxiety individuals: evidence from ERP and theta oscillations.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) is characterized by cognitive control impairments, particularly in the processing of threat, yet how threat-laden environments modulate cognitive control over neutral stimuli remains unclear. This study examined whether threat context impairs the processing of neutral words in individuals with high social anxiety (HSA) through electrophysiological and oscillatory dynamics. METHODS: A total of 151 participants (HSA vs. low social anxiety, LSA) completed a Stroop task in two conditions: (1) threat context (neutral words intermixed with social threat words), and (

The Impact of Social Stress on Trustworthiness Judgments in Schizophrenia.

The present study examines the impact of induced social stress on facial trustworthiness judgments in individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) and the associations between symptoms and trustworthiness ratings. Thirty-three individuals with SCZ and forty healthy controls (HC) were asked to rate the trustworthiness of 24 digitally morphed faces in two counterbalanced conditions. Mild social stress was induced by listening to loud noises from a busy street. BPRS, CAPE-42, and the Paranoia Scale measured the severity of symptoms. We did not observe significant differences in trustworthiness judgments

Adaptation in communication technology utilization: caring for individuals with chronic conditions in South Asia during the Covid-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the Covid-19 pandemic, people with chronic conditions experienced delayed or missed care, while their carers endured social isolation, loneliness, and reduced support. Information communication technology (ICT) can be utilized to encourage continuity of care, address misinformation, and allocate support. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the ICT adaptation of South Asian carers of individuals with chronic conditions by comparing changes in ICT utilization and preferences before and during the pandemic. METHOD: 416 South Asian carers reporting feelings of

The consequences of sibling criminal legal system contact for family life.

OBJECTIVE: To consider whether one sibling's criminal legal system contact influences another's material conditions, social support, and mental health and behavioral problems. BACKGROUND: Sibling incarceration is both the most common form of familial incarceration in the United States, with more than one in four Americans reporting ever experiencing this event, and highly unequally distributed. Despite how prevalent and unequally distributed sibling criminal legal system contact is, little research considers the consequences of that event for family life. This study seeks to partially fill th

Managing Health Without Stable Housing: Dimensions of Treatment Burden and Patient Capacity for People With Chronic Health Conditions Experiencing Homelessness.

Although chronic health conditions and homelessness are prevalent problems in the United States and globally, little research has used the lens of burden of treatment theory to examine the experiences of people facing these challenges simultaneously. This study aimed to illuminate dimensions of treatment burden, which refers to the work of being a patient with chronic conditions, and patient capacity to manage this burden in a sample of people experiencing homelessness and chronic health problems in Buffalo, New York, United States. We completed in-depth interviews with men and women recruited

Investigating social communication in mice: A two-intruders test approach.

Understanding the complex dynamics of social communication behaviors, such as exploration, communication, courtship, mating, and aggression in animal models, is crucial to reveal key neural and hormonal mechanisms underlying these behaviors. The two-intruders test is designed to investigate residents' behavior toward both male and female intruders within the home cage of the test male. During this test imitating natural conditions, several aspects of social interaction were investigated: Exploration, courtship, mating, and aggressive behavior. As mating and aggression involve overlapping neura

Predictors of depressive symptomatology of geriatric patients with lung cancer-a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a major health problem throughout the world. It is the leading cause of cancer-related death in men and women in the USA, with a 5-year survival rate of only 14%. It has been hypothesized that variables such as physical and social functioning, cancer-related symptomatology, comorbid conditions, cell type, and treatment are valid predictors of the psychological response to a diagnosis of lung cancer. METHODS: As part of a larger longitudinal study, 211 patients, 65 years of age or older, with an incident diagnosis of lung cancer, were recruited from 23 sites within a

Investigating extra-medical opioid use and social networks among people with post-traumatic stress disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and extra-medical opioid Use (EMOU) frequently co-occur. Few studies have examined the relationship between EMOU and social networks among people with PTSD. Accordingly, this study examined social networks in a sample of people with PTSD in the United States by assessing the association between social network size/diversity and lifetime EMOU status. METHODS: Data came from a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of adults who participated in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) from

Transdiagnostic factors differentially shape choices and decision times in social evaluative learning.

BACKGROUND: Learning from feedback provided by others is important for navigating complex social environments. Aberrant processing of such social feedback is implicated in the psychopathology of several mental health disorders including social anxiety and depression. Recent psychiatric research increasingly adopts transdiagnostic approaches that examine mechanisms and constructs cutting across traditional diagnostic categories. METHODS: Here, we applied reinforcement learning models together with transdiagnostic measures of psychopathology to formally assess social evaluation learning. Human

Cross-sectional study of psychosocial and pain-related variables among patients with chronic pain during a time of social distancing imposed by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact, including on individuals with chronic pain. The social distancing policies necessary to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2 have involved increased levels of social isolation. This cross-sectional survey study examined pain severity and interference among individuals with chronic pain during an early phase of social distancing mandates and identified characteristics of individuals who were most impacted. Approximately 4 to 8 weeks after social distancing mandates commenced in the state of Massachusetts, 150 patients with fibromyalgia, chronic spine,
