Gender differences in the effect of unemployment on psychological distress.

In this paper we examine whether unemployment has a differential impact on the expression of psychological distress among men and women. Based on the traditional centrality of the work role to men and the family role to women, we defined several key domains that might affect unemployed men and women differentially: family circumstances, concerns and worries about children and family; coping responses; social support and social integration; and the centrality of the work role. While the study population either were or hoped to be in the labor force and had dependent children, they varied in the…

Food insecurity versus public health? Social resilience.

The health problems of low-income communities and their relationship to food insecurity are a widespread problem worldwide. Understanding the complex relationship between these two conditions of food insecurity and health outcomes is the focus of this study. In addressing these issues, managing food security and adopting comprehensive strategies that consider the broader public health of the poor and socially vulnerable requires a multi-pronged approach that integrates sustainable food systems, social protection interventions, community engagement, and nutrition-specific interventions. Social fear memory as a framework for understanding social defeat stress and psychopathology.

Social defeat is a potent stressor in both rodents and humans that, under conditions of chronic or severe stress, can lead to persistent social avoidance. This review synthesizes evidence supporting the view that social defeat promotes the formation of social fear memory through associative learning mechanisms that parallel classical fear conditioning. Drawing on preclinical models, we describe how the context of social defeat functions as a conditioned stimulus, while the experience of defeat serves as an unconditioned stimulus, giving rise to fear-related behaviors such as freezing and socia

The intertwining of discourses in the diagnostic construction of cystic fibrosis: a perspective on access and barriers.

The complexities referred to in the search for "accuracy" in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) point to reflections around "what is needed" in the current situation of "precision medicine". We analyzed the discourses of 19 social actors belonging to the community of specialists in cystic fibrosis, exploring the semantic meanings of the word "precision", and the barriers to diagnosis and innovations in therapeutics. We adopted the critical discourse analysis (CDA) of Norman Fairclough in order to achieve the discursive constructions around the integrality of care, the guarantee and equitabl

Maltreatment and Delinquency in China: Examining and Extending the Intervening Process of General Strain Theory.

Using a sample of 1,163 adolescents from four middle schools in China, this study explores the intervening process of how adolescent maltreatment is related to delinquency within the framework of general strain theory (GST) by comparing two models. The first model is Agnew's integrated model of GST, which examines the mediating effects of social control, delinquent peer affiliation, state anger, and depression on the relationship between maltreatment and delinquency. Based on this model, with the intent to further explore the mediating effects of state anger and depression and to investigate w

Beyond Single-Platform Adoption: Unpacking Doctors' Cross-Channel Behavioral Mechanisms in Omni-Channel Medical Practice.

Background: As digital healthcare ecosystems evolve, doctors are no longer confined to a single platform for online medical services. Instead, a new omni-channel service mode has emerged, integrating professional medical platforms with widely used social platforms. This shift raises important questions about how doctors adopt and navigate multi-platform environments. The purpose of this study is to explore the behavioral mechanisms that shape doctors' adoption of omni-channel online medical services in the post-pandemic era. Methods: Drawing on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Techn

Barriers and facilitators to injectable opioid agonist treatment engagement within a structural vulnerability context: a qualitative study of patient experiences in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Amidst a sustained drug poisoning crisis, there is growing recognition in Canada of the need to expand injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT). iOAT is an intensive treatment that involves the daily self-administration of hydromorphone or diacetylmorphine under healthcare provider supervision, typically accompanied by other health and social services. While this treatment has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing drug use-related risks, high threshold characteristics may also create barriers to engagement. This study examined patients' experiences of barriers and facilitators t

Political conservatism and social distancing from people living with HIV among Medical students: mediating roles of negative stereotypes and negative Intergroup emotions.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma within the health care system is a major barrier preventing people living with HIV (PLWH) from accessing and continuing treatment. Psychosocial factors such as political orientation, personality characteristics, and personal moral values of health care providers have not been adequately investigated. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms and effects of these drivers on social distancing from PLWH is needed. The present study aims to fill these gaps in the literature by examining the stigmatizing attitudes of medical students from the perspective o

Sexual Identity Development and Social Ecological Facilitators and Barriers of PrEP Uptake and Adherence Among Latinx Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Latinx gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (LMSM) report lower pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use than their white, non-Latinx counterparts. We hypothesize that this disparity is partially attributable to social ecological factors that can be addressed via prevention interventions. In this retrospective study, we first examined data from 253 LMSM to determine whether theorized associations existed between acquisition of a PrEP prescription (uptake) in relation to several social ecological factors based on a conceptual framework of determinants of access to and uptake of PrEP fo

Changes in healthcare use and cost associated with referrals to social prescribing link workers in England: a matched case-control cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing primarily aims to address patients' non-clinical needs and increase the appropriateness of healthcare use. A major new national programme in England, introduced in 2019, has led to substantial increases in referrals to social prescribing link workers. Impacts on healthcare use and cost have not been examined. We aimed to address this. METHODS: This case-control cohort study used anonymised electronic healthcare records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) Aurum dataset, which contains around 25% of the English population to examine healthcare use

A paradigm shift for health equity in implementation science.

BACKGROUND: Research and theory in the field of implementation science (IS) are increasingly prioritizing health equity. Although this shift is an important development for the field, IS has not yet systematically engaged with theories and methods of critical social science that help to clarify the challenges and opportunities of efforts to improve health equity. In our paper, we present a summary of recent contributions to dialogue on health equity in the field of IS and highlight the value of critical social science theory to advance research and action for social justice and equity in imple

Football and symbols: a Bayesian analysis of symbolic consumption in sports club brands.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary football operates as a cultural system in which club brands function as symbolic resources through which fans construct identity, lifestyle, and social belonging. However, existing research has largely relied on linear analytical approaches, limiting the understanding of how real social identity, ideal social identity, and lifestyle interact as an integrated symbolic system. AIMS: This study aims to analyze how football club brands generate a sense of belonging through symbolic consumption, considering the interrelationships among real social identity, ideal social

Emotional straying: Flux and management of women's emotions in social media.

In recent years, social media, which has emerged with the core focus on interaction within "acquaintance networks," has gradually been infiltrated by "strangers," leading to the disorientation of many users, especially women, amidst the diverse and intricate social platforms and emotional landscapes. Grounded in the experiential perspective of social media users, this study explores the correlations among woman emotions, satisfaction, and behavior, starting from the standpoint of the impact of social media. Through in-depth interviews with woman cohorts in China, various dimensions such as emo
